Rafa Benitez will be allowed to buy two players next month – and he wants Emile Heskey back at Anfield as one of them.

The Liverpool boss has come under sustained pressure following a dreadful first half of the season.

But Benitez will be offered backing by the board, proof he still has a future at the club.

Star striker Fernando Torres last night admitted the situation was bleak, as he said: “I think it is really difficult because I think we don’t have money to bring in the best players – and obviously we need players.
Click here to find out more!

“But if we can bring in quality players, it should be really positive for us.â€

Heskey scored 60 goals in four years at Liverpool before being sold in the summer of 2004 – a month before Benitez took over.

With the World Cup looming and his starting position at Aston Villa far from guaranteed, the England striker could be attracted back to the club.

Benitez admires Heskey’s unselfish approach and feels he could provide the perfect foil for Torres.

Benitez has also looked at Ruud van Nistelrooy and Italy international Luca Toni as alternatives.

He wants a wide player, and is considering a move for Celtic’s Aiden McGeady, available for about £8million. Also on the radar is Holland winger Eljero Elia, who could be prised away from Hamburg for £10m and Turkish flyer Arda Turan.

Benitez may have up to £15m to spend as he allows up to four players to leave in the transfer window, with Ryan Babel chief among his saleable assets.

He can also try to raise funds by selling Italy defender Andrea Dossena, Ukraine striker Andriy Voronin and Swiss full-back Philipp Degen.

Liverpool have dismissed suggestions that Saudi tycoon Prince Faisal bin Fahd Bin Abdullah al Saud is close to agreeing a deal to buy a stake in the club.

The member of the Saudi royal family owns the F6 marketing group and has been invited as a guest to Liverpool’s Boxing Day match with Wolves by owner George Gillett.

But insiders claim no deal to sell any stake in the club is near, and the prince is not a serious contender to buy into Anfield.

Re: Some

Of all the strikers in the league, Heskey would be a good partner for Torres.
He certainly is for Rooney at international level.

I'm not sure if I can watch him fall on his arse with no one near him though.
I came to hate him more than most towards the end of his stay.

Aiden McGeady and Emile Heskey?

Underwhelming, to say the least.

Yep. Which unfortunately makes it all sound incredibly feasible too.

If Rafa wants a hard working, selfless but technically limited player to play alongside Torres he doesn't have to look outside the first team

As a partner for Torres signing Heskey wouldn't be the worst idea. However, if we are looking for another striker to play when Torres is injured or to come off the bench and provide extra firepower then he's far from ideal is he?

It is however good news of sorts that its looking like revenue from player sales will be made available. The only worrying thing is that the players listed for sale here are all of our surplus players. We have noone else who is unnecessary and would raise a fee.

I would say that Heskey is a better option than Babel, N'gog, Dirk and Voronin, but worry about his ability and class to be our saviour

Heskey is not a bad player. But a bit like Crouch, having a player like him encourages other's to pump it long and doesn't speak well for the brand of football we'll be looking to employ.

Arda and/or Elia would be exciting January signings.

Not sure I'm too fussed about that in the short term. We are currently playing shit football and losing. Playing shit football and winning would at least be a step in the right direction

Whether Heskey can help us do that is another issue entirely.

most of us have stop being purist and become realist. we just want to win, ugly or not does not matter any more.

Yeah, good point.

Ignoring the fact that this is most likely lazy journalism, buying Emile Heskey would be like admitting that we're going backwards. It would also be an open invitation for us to revert to hoofball. Wouldn't mind seeing Elia or Turan here though.

Bearing in mind that our ambition in the market will be limited because our funds will be limited, I'm not convinced getting Heskey would be such a bad idea, at least in theory. When Heskey was with us and got the chance to play with Baros (which wasn't often because Owen was our no.1 striker) they looked a good combo and Baros, while not nearly in Torres' class, had a similar style in some respects - pacy, working across the front line as well as up and down the pitch. Given that Torres is so much better than Baros, a combo with Heskey could work that much better as well. Capello likes Heskey too, so there has to be something there we could build on.

O'Neill would stiff us on the price though.

Yes he does, for a striker anyways.

Is Heskey playing much for Villa now? A few months ago there was a lot of talk about him leaving to get first team football.

O'Neill obviously wouldn't want to sell to us but if he doesn't need him I don't think he would stand in his way with a World Cup round the corner either.

Do you reckon if Benitez had arrived a few months earlier we would have had Heskey here all this time?

make that three .... i was hoping he would be our "silva" lining in the summer.

What's the point of signing a 32-yr-old striker who doesn't score goals? No thanks.

We do desperately need a new LW though. I haven't seen much of either Arda or Elia, but if they're young, fast, skilful, left-footed and NOT injury prone, that'll be a massive improvement over what we've got at the moment.

The point, Bunny, would be the same as it currently is for England, namely to help us make the best of what we've got, and quickly. Unfortunately short-term necessity sometimes has to outweigh longer-term considerations. Like you I'd love to be more ambitious in the market, but we can't (yet) afford that.

Both right footed. From the little i've seen (mainly for their country) out of the two, Arda is probably more comfortable on his left foot, although his pace is more equivalent to that of a Nasri/Arshavin whereas Elia is more explosive and comparable to Nando.

Hoofball would be better than the current limp football we are dishing out.

There is a point to be made there, we would be looking to get Heskey to try and overhaul, Villa , City , Spurs et al, and for the money they would get , it would make more sense for them to keep him rather than sell him to us
