If VVD and Keita fail, Klopp will be gone soon. If they pushes us on upwards (if Coutino not leaving) and win us the league title, Klopp will be the new messiah. I think it is all or nothing gamble. If the gamble is a failure, it will set LFC back another decade to challenge for the title as we would have depleted the financial reserves of the club?
What if VVD and Keita improves us and we don't win the CL or the league?

Is that a failure then?

The only disgusting aspect about this is having to hand that amount to money to Southampton, that grates much more than caring about us losing that much money. Just giving it over to them, after their bullshit in the summer, it's disgusting. There must follow some sort of revenge, or they have to be relegated, something to make it right. As it stands, we're dickheads.
We trust that you're on it.

It's an insane amount of money for a CB but Fuck it we are desperate. If he gets back to last season's form and not this season then what he will bring will improve us massively. Not 75m massively but enough to help get over being fleeced on the price.

I don't think success can be judged so simply or easily as saying 'win things' (I'm going to start a thread on this) nor do I think our 'reserves are going to be depleted' by this transfer. I think it's clear we have a large 'warchest' (Echo said £200m large Summer, that will of course have gone up substantially by this coming Summer and doesn't take into account if/when we sell Coutinho) and it's also clear we wouldn't spend beyond our means.

If we end up with our top 3 CBs being VVD, Matip & Gomez for years to come, then spending that extra amount on VVD to be a trusted leader to Matip (free) or Gomez (nominal amount that I can't remember) then I wouldn't mind. I'm excited to see him playing with his va va voom back. You can tell from @doctor_mac 's clip that he makes very well timed blocks and interceptions that require desire to make, and given circumstances of late, you can understand why he hasn't done that this season so far.

Is it the same people who say we dont spend enough money to compete, yet moan about the fee when we actually spend some money? Cant have it both ways.

Comparing us to Evertons spending is just bonkers. They spent loads of money on an ubalanced team and average players that Didnt improve them.
We're adressing a key weakness with a player that have all the qualities We're looking for. This summers fuck up has surely cost us an extra 10-15 mill as well to smooth things over with Soton.

Totally not arsed about the money but think without a new keeper might not make that much difference. Good signing though.

It might even make a negative difference. Van Dijk seems like a bit a cunt who likes to shout at and blame other players under the guise of 'leadership'. The consequences of Mignolet being repeatedly shouted at could be utterly devastating.

Devastating... in what way?

Make Mingey worse?

There is absolutely no course of action that could result in Mingey being worse than he currently is.

With Man City's success this season not many are questioning the purchase of Walker (54 mill), Mendy (52 mill) or Danilo (27 mill). A total of 123 mill on full backs.

So, as others have said if he plays well and we have a better defensive record and success, no one will mention the fee.
If we continue to struggle and he plays poorly he'll be in the spotlight.

Klopp will probably handle this like he did with Robertson and Oxlade and let him settle.

Hopefully us fans will give him time as well, although we know some wont.

At least if comes in and does well, and we are still conceding silly goals, Klopp will have NO choice but to look at the DM and GK positions.

For the owners it will be a failure after spending such huge sum. Mourinho is being and will be judged a failure at ManU if he does not win any of the 2 main titles after spending 300 million.

If Coutinho leaves the money will go a long way to defray the cost of VVD. But still a large section of the fan and owners will demand some titles or cups with the gross 200 million spent.

Don't sell Coutinho if LFC WANTS to win titles.

Who do people rate as the best CB in the league?

Kompany? (injury seems to have finished him)
Otamendi? (was calamitous until this season)
Koscielny? (seems to have lost an edge; see the way Pogba rolled him)
Jones? (was a joke before Jose came in)
Bailly? (a physical specimen, but not a great ball player or passer)
Luiz? (Conte doesn't seem to think so)
Cahill? (not really)
Vertongen? Possibily.
Alderweireld? Probably.

Well, most Saints fans seem to think VVD is the best CB they've ever had. And they've had both Alderweireld and VVD, so I think there's reason to be optimistic.

  1. Alderweireld
  2. Vertongen
  3. VvD

Vertongen hasn't look that good without Alderweireld ... He's a very elegant defender, but is he top 3? If he is, it just shows how average the CBs are here nowadays!

Kompany is at least #2 in that list if he could string a run of games together but he's just a bloody sick note

Some defenders excel with a particular partner but are lousy with someone else.

Hyppia and Henchoz where excellent but Henchoz and ... was an accident waiting to happen

Alderweirld was really good with Ajax, Atleti and Soton ... He's class - pity we didn't get him instead of Lovren! 🙂

In that list apart from Kompany i think most defenders in world football in clubs like ours and bigger than us are all at the same level. Man Cities defence has not been tested at all this season because they are truly dominant in possession by a very large degree. It will be interesting when we go at them.

It's an insane amount of money, but it seems the going rate these days for a top class player..which he definitely is. 75 million wouldn't be balked at so much if he was a forward or a midfielder. He's up there with the best at what he does, and if you want the best then you pay top whack.

Well when the scum spent 2.5M on Pallister it was mad money, then they blew 30M on duck face and it was ridiculous ...

Alderweireld is probably the best CB, but its close between him and VVD in my opinion.
