So we're not going to sign any proven top class striker?

If that is, we can forget about the title next season.

I dont fucking care how many fucking goals we'll get from our midfield or wingers or defenders. The truth is, no fucking team in the PL has won the title without a proven 20-30 goals a season striker.

Does Flopp knows that? He had Lewandoski when he was in Dortmund and they won the league. Leicester won the league last 2 seasons with Vardy their top scorer. Chelsea had Costa last season.

So we're going to spend 35 - 40 mil for 1 fucking winger. We havent even sort out our defence yet. Lovren is just average. Matip decent and can improve. We'll see this season. We need 1 top class defender. 1 top class striker. 1 left back. We're good to go.

Wrong.

Now fuck off unless you bother to do your research properly. You and Brendan are as bad as each other for completely failing in that regard.

1993 - Man Utd (their top scorer - Cantona 15)
1994 - Man Utd (their top scorer - Cantona 18)
1996 - Man Utd (their top scorer - Cantona 16)
1997- Man Utd (their top scorer - Solskjaer 17)
1998 - Arsenal (their top scorer - Bergkamp 16)
1999 - Man Utd (their top scorer - Cole 15)
2001- Man Utd (their top scorer - Sheringham 15)
2005 - Chelsea (their top scorer - Lampard 13)
2006 - Chelsea (their top scorer - Lampard 16)
2007 - Man Utd (their top scorer - Ronaldo 17)
2009 - Man Utd (their top scorer - Ronaldo 18)

So in 27 yrs : 16 seasons had a 20+ goalscorer (though 3 of those seasons were borderline, with exactly 20) and 11 had 18 goals or less. We may already have an 18 goals a PL season on the books.

NB1 : 2011 - United scrape into the 20's with Berbatov (20) in no-one's mind a 'top striker', being no more than good'. Their second highest scorer had 13 goals.
NB2 : 2014 - Liverpool had both top scorers (Suarez 31, Sturridge 21) and still lost out to whose top scorer was Toure, a midfielder, with 20 goals.
NB3 : 2015 - Chelsea scrape into the 20's with Costa (20). Their second highest scorer had 13 goals.
NB4: The top scorer hasn't come from the Champions since 2012/13.
NB5: There hasn't been a team winning the PL in the past 8 years without a 20 or more goalscorer. Though 3 seasons were exactly 20 goals. Either this is a shift in playing styles to accommodate strikers (probably not), a 'golden era' for strikers (probably not) or the extra money in the PL has meant an influx of better strikers (most likely).
NB6 : History is no indicator of future performance.

Disclaimer for the numbskulls : None of the above post is a statement that I am averse to bringing in a cracking goalscorer that fits in with Klopp's style of play !! I just hate lies being used to substantiate a position.

It's a daft thread, but the point (despite being exaggerated) is valid. Most teams that win the league, have someone who weighs in heavily with goals. In those "27 seasons" only four teams won the league with a top scorer of 15 or less. Coutinho was our top scorer in the league with 13 last season. So in 27 seasons, 23 teams won the league having had a player who scored 16 or more. That's pretty significant. Or even still, 60% of the teams that won the league over that period, had a player that scored 20 or more. And I'd wager quite a few of them teams had a second goalscorer who still outweighed what our top scorer achieved last season.

unless Klopp can find an absolutely TOP class striker, and I mean top class, I can see him sticking with Firmino, Mane and another goalscoring attacking left winger.
Hopefully Salah.

So, the goalposts for this proven goal scorer have moved from 20 goals to 15 goals now?

I just think this misses the point by a long way. I have no idea of stats but I'd wager the league winners have something near the best GD most seaaons? And the correlation between this and winning the league is stronger than the 20 goal scorer and winning the league. Therefore I imagine it would prove that it's not just about 1 bloke. But about how many the team actually scores. And, probably more importantly, concedes.

Careful. Brendan claims it's 80%+ of PLs are won with 20+ goal scorers.

Actually you'd be surprised (see link below). The majority of second top scorers for a PL winning team seem to have around 13-15 goals.

Coutinho and Mane both hit 13 each in an injury (and AFCON) hit season. I've no doubt they could have scored 15-18, maybe even 20 in Mane's case, with a near full season under their belts. Mane missed 10 games and Coutinho 7 but their actual minutes played is near identical (2,242 vs 2,229 mins: equivalent to nearly 25 x 90 mins games).

When looking at figures, I think we should also consider the type of goals (i.e. situation in which they are scored in/"importance" - game winning goals, points earned by their goals scored etc.).

2016/17
Harry Kane Games: 16; Goals: 29; Wins: 15; Draws: 1; Defeats: 0; Points average: 2,88 ; Game winning goals: 10
Romelu Lukaku Games: 17; Goals: 25; Wins: 12; Draws: 2; Defeats: 3; Points average: 2,24 ; Game winning goals: 4
Alexis Sánchez Games: 17; Goals: 24; Wins: 14; Draws: 1; Defeats: 2; Points average: 2,53 ; Game winning goals: 8
Diego Costa Games: 18; Goals: 20; Wins: 16; Draws: 1; Defeats: 1; Points average: 2,72 ; Game winning goals: 10
Sergio Agüero Games: 15; Goals: 20; Wins: 10; Draws: 4; Defeats: 1; Points average: 2,27 ; Game winning goals: 7

2014/15
Kane scored 21 goals that season but Tottenham finished 5th. Chelsea won the league and had Costa scoring 20 goals but as the table below suggests, it was Hazard's goals that made more of the difference.

Yeah ok, try reading it again, though actually try reading it. You know, the bits about stats for 15 goals or less, 16 goals or more, and the percentage of 20 plus goals. It's not difficult.

Yeah, I don't agree with your view and never have. Personally, I find the obsession with who actually scores the goals an odd one. As long as we're scoring, I'm not bothered who knocks them in.

You can't handle the truth...

I'm not obsessed with who scores the goals. What a ridiculous point. I think we can be even better and score more and be pretty lethal as a result. It's not about any individual, I couldn't give a fuck about a focal point in the team, I just want us to be as good as we can be.

Well, yeah, doesn't everyone on here? It's more we would seem to disagree on how we go about it.

You think it's by buying a striker. I disagree.

The majority of teams who win the Premier League start with 11 players on the pitch.

FACT!
Well this is just pure BS, as Scum proved under Slur Alex, they more often than not started with 12 on the pitch,. Furthermore, they have extended that under Maureen to include the linesmen as well .... of course that hasn't proven too successful so far.

Edit - in fairness, and on reflection, we should not count the linesmen as they are not technically "on the pitch", so its still only 12

How many of the 20+ club also took the penalties, and how many did that add to their total.

We won't sign a top striker I don't think. It seems clear to me that Klopp's trying to create the arch typical 4-3-3 system. The goal threat coming from 2 pacey wide players playing on their wrong foot. The central striker great at movement, working the channels and drifting in between the lines - dare I say it, a false 9. Backed up by 3 ball playing creative midfielders.
