If Doc's scouting report is anything to go by (and I believe it is) then that formation would be rather dangerous. Perhaps it'll work at home against the likes of Wigan and Blackburn but I doubt we'll ever see anything like that against the say the Mancs or Citeh.

Gerrard / Cole / meireles
Adam / meireles ? DM / Lucas / meireles
We don't need a DM in every game but we might be able to utilise 2 in some games.
I think that's a flexible system.

Gerrard, Meireles and Adam aren't some flouncy Riquelme types though who will just stand around waiting for the next attack to get involved in. All can be expected to put a shift in.

Yeah, I think without getting in a specialist DM, our best option is to play Meireles, Gerrard and either Adam or Lucas in a midfield trio. They're all clever enough players to be able to cover each other and play defensively when needs be. If we played with just two in the middle I think we'd be over run.

it's not a case of 'putting in a shift' if a case of stretching team, providing width, crossing. to me we have a pressing need to address this. as for a dedicated holding midfielder can adam and meireles be counted on to win the ball off the opposition?

As much as anyone else in the squad can be, yeah. I'm a little amazed at this attitude at times.
Have none of you ever seen Gerrard tackle? He's actually quite good at it.
Meireles came in with the reputation of an all round midfielder who started off as a fullback and has played DM for Portugal.
Adam wouldn't have gotten by in the SPL or the Championship without being able to put in a defensive shift.
None of these guys are DM specialists, if that's what you're looking for, but then you - for years - have been saying that we don't need one.
