Looks like the Brazilian will be our first and last big signing of the summer.
So no new centre-half, it seems.

Touré and Agger are obviously our first choice pairing and they've looked rock solid in pre season.
We didn't concede a single goal with both of them on the pitch.

Skrtel is our first choice back up, which is fine.

Coates has imo not done much wrong but Rodgers clearly doesn't rate him.

Wisdom was a bit shaky against Celtic and needs more time and Kelly hasn't been tested in that position.

Touré looked rejuvenated in pre season but he's still a short term solution.
I really think we need to invest.

Thoughts?
 
It all hinges on Skrtel.

Toure has started promisingly and I've come around to the signing, but I don't have much faith in him being good enough over 38 games. Skrtel needs to step up, because he's already shown he can be good enough for us. His recent comments were are reassuring - much different to the lines we were getting 12 months ago so I'm optimistic.
 
Just score more than the opposition, that seems our theory looking at the signings
 
I think it's really clear we need a wold class cb to compete.
We will concede too many goals with a defensive pairing consisting of any two defenders from our squad you want to go with. We won't win enough games to get fourth due to this.

Everything has gone quiet with Papa. Perhaps he is too risky due to his injury. Maybe not. It'd be great to sneak in a deal for him last minute.
 
A front 3 of Coutinho Suarez and Sturridge is the best front 3 in the league regardless. It's a shame about the other 8.

Asked a colleague at work who's a Schalke fan and he said that he's far from being fully fit.

Looking at last season's stats that was the least of our problem. One goes in, oh go on have another. It wasn't often we conceded a single goal. We kept a lot of clean sheets, the problem was when we had 1 against us, it then turned in to 2 or 3.
 
I wonder if Stephen Sama will factor in at all this season, he looked very decent last preseason, but that was ages ago.
 
i have a friend in germany who played at a pretty high level back in the day and scouted the highest level of youth in Bavaria , he nearly always knows his shit. Anyway he reckons this Papa lad from schalke is the real deal and when fit is easily worth close to 20m . So it would have been nice to get him .

Anyway skrtel and agger can certainly both improve their form of last year , they looked a better partnership the year before but maybe something has changed under rodgers which leave them more exposed or 'uncomfortable' . Although i expect toure to start ahead of skrtel . How he goes we'll see , i expect alright but with the odd fuck up . Agger needs to cut out the slackness and concentrate on doing the safe thing first , he can then worry about the 'fancy' stuff of building play from the back .

like mentioned by others , the midfield give me more worries .
 
Didnt Rodgers say at his presser that he wants a CB but only the right type of player?

guess it wouldn't be a big surprise if we did a deal for a Centre back and skrtel left quickly after (probably on loan) .
 
I had big misgivings about Toure; but he has done well in preseason so far. I really dont know if Skrtel's one good season was the exception to the norm. Regardless, Rodgers doesn't seem to rate him. I'm really hoping we get a great CB. Havent seen Papa or Sakho play so really don't know if they will be good enough.

That's the kicker though, isn't it? A sod of a lot would be riding on this signing and we would really have to be sure we'd get our money's worth.
 
Toure's slotted in nicely so far, but let's face it, we haven't really played anyone of note apart from Celtic and Olym. I think he'll prove a shrewd purchase though, if only in terms of giving us depth. We need to buy a big commanding lad at the back though for the longterm, I hope we do that in the next two weeks.
 
realistically the key line for defence is the midfield - cb is not a major issue, misdield is. If they don't provide the right protection then even the best defence will look out of sorts. I think if Gerrard and play a didi role, but with the added attack of his long balls, then we will be fine.

I think a new centre back is (partly) key, we need a spine again and we need someone in there who can command and lead from the back, we need the same in midfield too. Our defense isn't appalling, but it's not watertight either, we look vulnerable alot and that's partly due to the midfield allowing it to be exposed, but also due to the fact that when it is exposed, we have no one pulling the shape together and commanding the box and barking orders. We need to buy two players in the mould of Hyypia/Hamann/Mascherano etc.
