I do believe Real Madrid offered the Dutchman plus cash for Alonso two summers ago however Rafa insisted on straight cash before spending £17M of it on Aquilanli.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing yet so is common sense.

Didn't the current owners at the time insist on money and no players in exchange.

I read somewhere that Higuain was offered. That makes me sick.

I think I'm in a minority here as in I think Sneijder would be crap in England. People seem to think he's up there with Iniesta, but he needs a bit of time on the ball... I think him and Aqua (given a run), would be quite similar for us.

It's not hindsight, many of us wanted him at the time. Not sure if he was that interested, but as people have said, we essentially had cashflow issues and those severely limited our options in the market.

I was going nuts about this at the time, given we held the cards.

What we didn't know then was that Sneijder ended up on stupid money at Inter - isn't it 220k a week after tax? There's no way we'd have got anywhere near that.

It's a deal I'd have taken, but more for Higuain's sake than Sneijder's. He was always a good player but a bit in-and-out in those days.

I don't remember the details...

The exchange offer was pre-worldcup and Sneijder's 220k a week deal was post world-cup, was it not?

May be there was a chance we could have tied that deal if we showed ambition, then?

Sneijder's performance in the worldcup really increased his market value....i think.

* I could very well be talking through my arse

Anyway, let bygones be bygone. You can only piss with the cock you have etc.

Yep, and appears to be the sticking point over his move to Scumchester.

On this global footy forum I was on at the time I was going on about how I'd love Sneijder to be part of the Alonso deal - but this Inter fan was on about how he was in the press in Milan saying that as soon as they'd gone for him they'd made it clear how important he was blah blah blah and the deal was all sewn up before the end of the season... I didn't know then that was code for - they're going to make me the highest paid footy player out there. I naively thought they'd got in early and talked him up, so I was berating everyone at LFC.

I really doubt he got an improved deal a season on after the world cup. He was out of our pay scale. Inter lost 500m quid over 3 years winning that CL. They went mental for it, we couldn't compete.
