Kilmarnock fans who made the long trip to Devon to see their team in action in the Joma Challenge Cup would be forgiven for double taking when they saw the line-ups for their 7-1 win over Bideford on Monday night. For listed among the substitutes were two names better known for playing in the higher echelons of the game: David Silva and Momo Sissoko.
The Silva most are aware of is the Spanish attacking player, who recently moved from Valencia to Manchester City in the middle of his participation in his country’s win at the 2010 World Cup. Unfortunately for Killie fans, the £25 million player wasn’t making an unexpected appearance in the blue and white.
Instead, new boss Mixu Paatelainen gave 25 minutes to a namesake trialist from Portugal, who played just behind a front pairing of Conor Sammon and Liam Kelly. Silva was on the park for two of Kilmarnock’s seven goals, which arrived through a 40-yard strike from fellow trialist James Dayton and Mehdi Taouil.
Also making his appearance in the 65th minute was Sissoko, again sadly not Juventus’ former Liverpool central midfielder, but a French central defender. Sissoko replaced Manuel Pascali and prevented Bideford from adding to their solitary strike, which they had got from the penalty spot in the first half.
Killie’s fourth trialist was goalkeeper Kyle Letheren, who Motherwell tried to sign on an emergency loan deal in April. The Steelmen were knocked back in their request by the SPL following the injury to John Ruddy, the league saying they had adequate cover in number two Michael Fraser and youth keepers Ross Hyslop and Shaun Thomson.
Pascali and Kelly were also on the scoresheet, with Dayton scoring a hat-trick and Taouil scoring twice. Killie will face English Premier League new boys Blackpool on Thursday night, also in Bideford, Devon. If they are successful, they will take part in the semi-finals of the competition on Sunday.
Before heading for England, Paatelainen said a new striker was his priority, having lost Kevin Kyle, David Fernandez and Allan Russell over the summer.
"A striker is our priority, but I am looking to strengthen in all departments," the Killie manager told the BBC. "There's a little money. Not too much. We are quite limited in what we can do, but we will dig deep."
