We've had great CBs in the last 20 years - Hyypia & Carra being the standouts - but have we had a CB like VvD who is the best CB in the world, and if not, in that discussion?

He's fucking incredible - his performance today was just fantastic.

Were our greats back the day - Crazy Horse, Hansen etc - considered the best in the world?

As an all-round CB, with the full range of skills and strengths, I think VVD must be pretty much at the top. Hansen was a superb CB but he didn't like heading the ball and wasn't that physically dominant. We've had some brilliant CBs in the past whose strengths obscured their weaknesses. I don't think VVD really has any weaknesses.

Sometimes, and it's rare, he's a bit too relaxed and that opens it up for attacking teams ... but he's bloody brilliant regardless.

Thanks fuck we spent the money. Don't think we'd have got over watching him turn out these performances for the likes of City knowing we'd blown signing him.

Best CB in the world right now in my estimation. He really is insanely good, couldnt ask for a better role model for Gomez.

He's amazing. Wiz is right, he's had the odd brain fart, but fact is, he has just improved the entire unit beyond recognition. He has vast confidence, amazing defensive heading, and a massive aura of leadership. If I got really pissed in some Far flung City, all kind of drugs imbibed, and my hallucinating gang of friends all got tattoos I'd get my wobbly version of Virgil etched onto my bicep. Possibly with some hepatitis. But it would be worth it.

He is outstanding, but it's also worth mentioning that Gomez has been fantastic this season.

I still remember where I was when I checked my phone and saw the news that LFC "ended their interest in Van Dijk transfer" after being caught tapping up by the Saints. I remember how I was just standing there dumbstruck – it really felt that this transfer was going to be the one that takes us to a different level and puts all the misery of having a chronically dodgy defense behind us. Having this fall through and potentially seeing Van Dijk bossing the defense of Man City or Chelsea (or god forbid United) would have been crushing... It's amazing how close we were to screwing it up – but now he's here and he's fucking boss.

I thought this was going to be about sucking him off. Disappointed

He's an amalgamation of the best Centre-backs I've seen at Anfield.
Heads it like Hyypia.
Leads/Organises like Carragher.
Positioning and passing like Hansen.
Hes also quicker and physically more imposing than all of the above.

All he needs is to win a few trophies and he could go down as the best ever.

Awwww it can still be about that. I’ll take a cock in the gob for the team! He’s gorgeous and he looks the kind of guy that would be polite to my mum. What’s not to love!? Without doubt he’s the most important signing we’ve made in fucking years.

That's an interesting categorisation. I was thinking purely in technical terms - ability on the ball, heading, tackling, positional sense, etc. I'd say there's never been any great player who hasn't at some stage tended to relax or not concentrate 100%. In my view, that's something that only undermines a player's overall ability and versatility if it remains there for their whole career, and I think both Klopp and Koeman are already improving him in that sense, but obviously he can get even better in that respect.

The other aspect there's more room for improvement - ominously for other teams - is his attacking prowess. He's excellent at coming forward with the ball, he's capable of driving all the way into attack and he's got a thunderous shot on him as well as being good in the air. We haven't seen him do much of this since he came, but his track record is impressive, and when we get those games when we seem to lack ideas, covering for VVD as he goes on a run might just shake things up enough to help our forwards.

I reckon he will belt in a freekick before the season is over, maybe a JAR thunderbolt

He has his own song and it got a good airing yesterday. How many CBs can you ever remember having a song? Carra did, I can’t think of any others since I’ve been going the game. He’s fucking boss.

Big Sami had one.

Didn't agger have one?

They play YNWA until bang on kickoff now so there isn’t any time. Agree, I miss that too.
