Yankees in the traditional sense are from the Northern states of the union (American Civil War).

Traditionally Yankee was most often used to refer to a New Englander (in which case it may suggest Puritanism and thrifty values)[14]. By the 20th century it was used for anyone non-immigrant coming from a state north of the Mason-Dixon Line, with a specific focus still on New England or New York.

You'll still get people from Alabama, Mississippi etc..calling people from the North "Yankees"
