Shelvey

Maybe. He looked handy today and certainly more in the mould of Alonso than Gerrard. It'll be interesting to see if / how he develops this season.

He has a way of receiving and passing the ball which is very different to past english midfielders....i like him.

Impressive passing, but didn't look fit (or maybe he isn't very energetic)

I like the look of Shelvey. Good passer of the ball. I expect great things from him. Encouraging start to his Liverpool career.

He's never going to be an explosive, pacy midfield player in the mould of Gerrard, because he hasn't got much pace, or explosiveness, so I think the Alonso comparison is perhaps the more accurate.

Can't agree with that assessment Bren, he played like a 16yr old version of SG 2 seasons ago when he first broke into the Charlton team. Last season Charlton were a mess (despite finishing in a play off place) and the manager never picked a settled midfield and the players never seemed to play in their preferred (best) positions, this meant that Shelvey was in-and-out of the team and never seemingly in the same position in consecutive games - I think this played a big part in his progress stagnating last season.

Who knows if he'll make the grade with LFC but if he does he will probably play a similar role to SG.

Agree here. I think he's simply lacking the fitness to be charging around the pitch, or has been told to take it easy.

He isn't too quick though, but anyway, he looks decent.

Seemed to play quite a bit for Charlton in a free, quite advanced midfield type of role, so he's got attacking instincts, for sure.

Interesting to see how he gets on this season.

I don't disagree as I haven't seen anywhere near enough of him, I just thought that he looked a little bit sluggish when getting back into position. Reminded me of Tom Huddlestone a little.
