Jonjo Shelvey has welcomed the extra competition for places in Liverpool's midfield and insists he's ready to rise to the challenge of trying win a place in Kenny Dalglish's side.

The Reds' ranks have been bolstered by the arrivals of Jordan Henderson, Charlie Adam, Alexander Doni and Stewart Downing so far this summer.

And rather than harbour any concerns opportunities to build on the 21 first-team appearances he made last season may be reduced, Shelvey is relishing the chance to fight for his place.

"I think it's good for the youths and reserves," he told Match Magazine. "The gaffer proved last season that he's not afraid to put young players in. We had six academy boys on the bench for one game, which is great for the club.

"I like the transfer window. I want new players to come into the club because I want to work with the best players in the world. I always keep an eye on the moves because it can be really interesting."

As is the norm at this time of year, Liverpool have featured heavily in newspaper gossip columns - and Shelvey admits to being inundated with questions from friends about any potential transfer activity at the club.

The No.33 has a simple response for those seeking insider knowledge.

He explains: "I get a lot of mates asking, 'Is that true? Is this true?', when they see rumours about me or my teammates. I just have to say, 'I don't know - leave me alone!' They keep asking and asking, but I tell them they can't believe anything until it's happened.

"I think a lot of the stuff that gets printed are just rumours. Some will come true, but some are rubbish.

"We hear rumours all the time, but to be honest we don't get told much of what the club is doing until a deal has gone through."

In addition to the four major signings made this summer, Liverpool also swooped for Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll in January - and Shelvey is delighted with the transfer business the club have conducted.

"He (John Henry) told everyone his plans when he first came in and he's backed up every word," he said. "It's great to have an owner like that.

"His time at the club has started really well and all the players are looking forward to seeing him put his plans into action.

"The club has done some good business. January was exciting when Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll arrived. I was ill the day Andy signed and I remember waking up that morning, flicking on Sky Sports News and just wanting to get into training."

Of course dalglish is going to be afraid of picking young players. I think shelvey will realise it this season and come to understand that actually dalglish was just a lot more afraid of putting poulsen or jovanovic in

He's 19 years old and has only made fleeting appearances so far. Which, in itself, is an achievement. The lad has ability, and a composure which is rare for someone so young. I think he'll be just fine.

That said, he's better on a football pitch than he is in front of a camera.

He has done nothing of note yet to make me think he will make it at liverpool.

You're absolutely right, in all honesty.

But he's going to.

Everytime he's come on he's looked like a fucking mental bundle of energy. He tries to play like he's gerrard even though he's not and I love that.

If I remember right Gerrard also tried to play like eh... Gerrard before he could.

I'm on the shelvey bandwagon no doubt, the guy is very young and has shown glimpses of his ability and has played a full season at charlton and a decent season at lfc. I think he will come on and play well this season.

Shelvey will get game time. What makes him stand out from the other players is his ability to make time on the ball. The more he plays the better he'll get.

He's got plenty of composure and assurance for his age. I don't know how good he'll become, but he's made a decent start to a career at a big club. He'll get opportunities here. There's plenty of cup games and sub opportunities for him to make the most of.

It's also probably good news for him that Ming has left. We don't have *that* much depth in central midfield anymore.

It probably didnt look great for Shelvey when Adam and Henderson signed but his attitude always seems to have been that hes prepared to fight for a place and wait for his chance to come. That was at the start of the window though and since then Poulsen Aqualani Cole and Mereiles have all been removed as midfield options. I think he will get games this season, maybe not as many as he would like but with Henderson playing mainly on the right and Gerrard still not clear of injury we only have Lucas and Adam currently infront of him in the pecking order. You could argue Spearing is too but I think they are probably too different to be considered competition for each other

Kenny has give the younger fringe players plenty of reason to be optimistic about their prospects and by all accounts Shelvey is very highly rated within the club, hes already had a run out in the League Cup this season and I think thats probably his main avenue for game time at least until a few months down the line when we have inevitable suspensions and injuries to deal with. Im glad hes part of the squad I think he has a bright future for us

Like last season when he picked Robinson, Flanagan and Spearing every week.

Not saying he wouldn't anyway, but he had little choice last season

He could have played Poulsen instead of Spearing though, or brought on Cole instead of Shelvey. Kelly was available against Sunderland but he still opted for Flanno.

He's a good young player. I've seen him thread a few nice through balls in his limited time on the pitch for us, so I think he stands a chance.
