Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho to miss Wembley semi-final after hamstring blow

By James Pearce

French star Sakho faces at least a fortnight out

Mamadou Sakho is set to miss Liverpool’s FA Cup semi-final showdown with Aston Villa at Wembley with a hamstring injury.

The France international limped out of Wednesday night’s narrow victory over Blackburn Rovers after pulling up clutching the back of his right leg.

A scan will determine the full extent of the damage but the club’s medical staff fear he will be sidelined for a minimum of two weeks.

That would rule the £15 million centre-back out of Monday night’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United at Anfield and the crunch cup tie with Villa in the capital. Sakho could also struggle to prove his fitness for the following league games against West Brom and Hull City.

Losing Sakho is a blow for boss Brendan Rodgers, who has also seen fellow centre-backs Martin Skrtel and Emre Can sidelined by suspension.

Skrtel will be available for Wembley as he completes his three-match ban when Newcastle visit Anfield. Can will be back to face the Magpies after missing the trip to Ewood Park.

In the absence of both Skrtel and Can, Rodgers ditched his three-man defence and reverted to a flat back four against Blackburn. After Sakho went off, Kolo Toure partnered Dejan Lovren and the duo performed expertly to keep the hosts out.

True, but Kolo and Lovren actually performed pretty well this week in a game which might have been expected to find them out. Keep the faith. At least try. 😉

Bad news this. Not just because we're short at the back at the moment, but because the guy is very important to us.

I usually give new signings a few months before expressing any strong opinions but with Sakho, for some reason, I felt comfortable declaring him a flop from early on....and I see no reason to change my mind. Not a huge flop but I don't want to see him as regular for too long.

Skrtel for me is our best CB; I'm still hoping that Lovren will come good based on what we witnessed from him last season. Toure should always be 4th choice. Sakho is an accident waiting to happen on a few occasions this season he has reminded my of Djimi Traore with his giraffe-on-ice "routine".

I wasn't too disappointed when Sakho became a regular because Lovren was awful but I'm that convinced that Sakho is not very good that I'd give Lovren another chance now because there's still a chance that he is the top drawer CB we thought we were getting.

Can-Skrtel-Lovren > Can-Skrtel-Sakho

I cannot believe how wrong you are. Will be our most important CB for many years.

Harsh at the very least I would think

Sean, as I always say, I've been wrong plenty of times before.....it's my opinion. We have had worse CB's in recent times but I'm certainly no fan of his and reckon he'll cost us a few goals a season with his "bambi-on-ice" antics. As ever, when I am critical of a LFC player, I really hope you're right and I'm wrong.

I think you're right, he's majorly over rated by a lot of fans probably partly because we've bought so much average shrug your shoulders type of shit, hopes need to be pinned on someone that seems half decent I suppose.

I guarantee no top CL club would come in for him if he were to leave in the not to distant future, it'd be a Marseille, Wolfsburg or Lazio type club for him.

Yep, he looks a bit awkward, that's it. He has played very well as a whole in his time with us. You say Skrtel is our best CB, but he's been here about 7 years and has a few nightmares in him a season. If we can overlook that for Skrtel, then Sakho, who has barely made any major mistakes in his two seasons with us, should be cut some slack. Odd that you have more faith in Lovren doing well than Sakho, despite Lovren looking like a car crash since he's joined us.

Yeah Marseille and Wolfsburg are shit like... They're only doing a bit better than us.

Sakho hasn't done anything wrong, played well when asked, was captain of France and PSG, integral to a mean France defence during the world cup, but whatever he's shit because he looks like he might make a mistake in the future. Sound, let's keep Lovren who has directly caused about 7 goals against us this season and Skrtel who, while good, scores about 4 own goals a season and has had about 5 awful games every season for 7 years.

People need to stop listening to Michael Owen and Martin Tyler.
