Ryan Bertrand

Was it in one of the news articles that Emre Can plays left back occasionally too?

Not really occasionally. I think he played 30% to 40% of his league games in Leverkusen for them there. I posted a breakdown of that somewhere in SCM last month or the month before when we were first linked; will see if I can find it again. Have also suggested that if we do fail to land a left back, it could be a "softer" position to break Cam into the league, especially against teams without a pacy / tricky wide player.

@Markeh - here it is. Reposting here.

I don't know what's the answer to our leftback problem but I don't think Ryan Bertrand is it either. Rather put my faith in a combination of Enrique, Flanno, Can and Johnson.

Actually, rightback is as much a problematic position.

I fail to see how Ryan Bertrand is an improvement on Enrique. So what's the point really?

Why buy a not-bad left back to add to the not-bad left back we've already got? It's fucking pointless. Just buy someone immense.

@studsup, that's a useful and interesting table showing that Bayer only conceded 4 goals in those 8 matches Can played at LB.

I can only think that Rodgers has decided to prioritise other positions based on Suarez leaving so we need to see where the Luis money goes (after tax). Originally we were in for Moreno at £16M so it's not that we were planning to skimp on the LB position.

Bertrand seems to have been Rodgers backup plan ... which doesn't bode well because if he thought he really was worth the gamble, and has the potential, then he wouldn't be planning to splash out on Moreno (which deal, according to Pearce, isn't yet dead so the Bertrand rumour could be just that or a ruse to try and force their hand).

LB : Enrique, Flanagan, Can
RB : Johnson, Flanagan, Kelly

Both need strengthening but neither are absolute priorities since if Enrique is back to full fitness then he is good enough for me (with plenty of cover) and that let's Johnson/Flanno battle it out for the RB berth.

I don't understand how signing Bertrand helps. Either buy a top quality LB or sue the money more wisely elsewhere.

Is Kelly still in contention for a role at the club? He could still make a Flanno-like turnaround I guess but with him it's always been an issue of fitness.

Hoping the likes of McLaughlin, Wisdom, Suso, Teixeira and Ibe can make the step in the coming season. Will save us a lot of resources.

Rodgers specifically stated that Kelly was making progress and would have a part to play next season, so I think we can assume he is part of the RB roster.

I think Wisdom will be either loaned out again or sold, same goes for Suso. I really really like what i've seen of both Teixeira and Ibe and hope they can get some good game-time this coming season.

If we sign Markovic, I think it definitely means the end for Suso, and possibly Teixeira as well. We'd have quite a few young players in the positions these two guys play, e.g. Markovic, Coutinho, Sterling, and Lallana. Ibe, whom I think is the most ready of his U21/Academy contemporaries, would probably get ahead of both of them as well.

That Suso is on the last year of his contract and yet to sign (or be offered) a new one probably means he's off. transfermarkt has Teixeira's contract expiring in June 2014 but that doesn't seem right, since he just arrived in January 2012. Not clear how long he has on his contract. Won't be surprised if he goes out on loan with a view to a sale if Markovic arrives.

I maybe wrong here, but I do remember reading somewhere that Suso has been offered a new contract but he has not signed it yet as he wants some assurance of getting first team chances.

I thought Teixeira was more likely to compete with Henderson and Allen. Many think Suso would be better off there too. You are likely right, but perhaps one of the them will fill squad roles in the midfield.

Yeah I recall something about him saying he'd like us to allow him to move on if we're not going to play him (much). It was always a risk that by not offering him a new contract before he went out on a season's loan, something like this would happen.

He's shit. I'll be gutted if went for such a bang average player. Thats 6m down the toilet for what? We'll only end up next season spending more money on another fullback. Buy quality now and not having to keep worrying about it every fucking year. With the way we play a quality fullback is essential. Bertrand is hull level not liverpool.

If he isnt a significant improvement on Enrique and/or Flanno, save the money for spunking on a top quality striker or attacking mid who can play across the front. None of this Rafa style rotating mediocrity please.

@steviefoolsgold Obviously, left-back is a priority. Still trying to get Moreno.

Well maybe Bertrand won't be our number one left back, or even bought, maybe he's a smokescreen in the Moreno deal, saying that, I can't say I'm convinced by Moreno at £20million.

Am I the only person who is sick of hearing about our LB 'problem' and 'woes'. We have Enrique, we have Flanno, we have Johnson who often plays there and we have Agger who can play there.

I genuinely think Flanno can be. If we were to address one of the FB positions, it would need to be with a real top notch player, as we have several highly rated prospects ourselves, we don't need to cash in on others' prospects.

He was pretty good for chelsea in the CL a few seasons back, if anyone knows how to get the best out of him then it will be Brendan.

Could be a steal?
