Christian Poulsen will prove his Liverpool worth, says Roy Hodgson

• Christian Poulsen 'devastated' by form at Liverpool
• Roy Hodgson still has faith in £4.5m Danish midfielder

Andy Hunter The Guardian, Friday 12 November 2010

Roy Hodgson has defended his £4.5m purchase of Christian Poulsen despite admitting the midfielder will struggle to win acceptance from Liverpool supporters after a poor start to his Anfield career.

The Denmark international has endured a torrid time since his arrival from Juventus in the summer, when he was signed by Hodgson, his former manager at Copenhagen, as a replacement for the Barcelona-bound Javier Mascherano. Poulsen was withdrawn to ironic jeers against Napoli at Anfield last week while his 73rd-minute introduction for Dirk Kuyt during Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Wigan was booed by Liverpool fans.

Poulsen's price will rise to £5.5m depending on achievements at Liverpool and though Hodgson refused to defend the Dane at all costs he is confident the 30-year-old will justify the price tag and his judgment.

"He was good against Wigan, his introduction secured the point at least because he was very good when he came on," the Liverpool manager said. "Unfortunately I can't do anything about the fans, but he's had one or two games in front of our crowd where he's not played well and he knows he hasn't. He is devastated by that and the crowd, who aren't stupid, know he's not played well. It's a fact of life.

"He can only keep working hard and when he gets his chance he has to get on with his job. He had a job to do against Wigan and without his introduction, with a very tired Maxi Rodríguez and Dirk Kuyt, who knows we could even have lost the game. But he's got quality, he's a good defensive midfield player. He's not that bad on the ball, but let's not beat about the bush and try to disguise the fact – he's had a bad start."

Poulsen also struggled in Italy and in Spain with Sevilla and Hodgson admits the failure to make a positive early impression in England has had an impact on the midfielder. The manager said: "When I took him off in one game he was devastated, not just because I'd made the decision but because he knows he was nowhere near the level he can play. He knows having played in Italy, for Juventus, that when you play well the crowd sing your name and when you're not playing well they boo you. He knows that. But I have every faith in him. We will get a lot of good use out of him over the year but he knows it will be tough to win the fans over.

"I can't wave a magic wand to do that, I can't speak for them, but I'd be surprised if the ones at Wigan said he didn't do anything for the team because he did. He won a lot of challenges, got us on the counterattack on several occasions, didn't miss a pass and won a few headers. He's devastated because he wants to do well, because that's what he came to Liverpool to do. Every player gets sad if they're not immediately accepted by the crowd or if their performances aren't good enough to do that. But he's doing his best and people have bad games."

I kinda agree with that. He's a better player than he's showed thus far, and will probably improve.

Even then though, he's probably not good enough long term.

Hodgson is one of the most detached managers ever in terms of his rhetorical stance toward the supporters.

I'd hope that Poulsen's a lot better than he's shown, but he's an unathletic, slow player on the way down, so his real level of play isn't ever going to be impressive, or what we need. I have absolutely no idea why we bought him.

That said, of course he could help if he started playing decently, in fact, he'd get whole reactionary threads about just how wonderfully competent he is, such is the state of our midfield.

This time it's different. We know what will happen in 3 years time. There is no need to wait.

Poulsen will hit menopause.

That is EXACTLY right

It does seem to come off as being a bit pandering,or dare I say it, patronising.

Roy will come out publicly and back Poulsen. He was a waste of 5M and we got had by Juventus.

He has been spectacularly shite and even he can't get worse.

Of course he will, more important are his actions with Poulsen when it comes to playing him and one thing you can't say is that Hodgson is stubborn over his own signings, because so far he's took him straight out of the limelight as he's clearly struggling for form.

Other managers would persevere and persevere to justify themselves.

Perhaps not in this issue, but i'd certainly like to see some of that stubborn authority from Roy if he is keeping his job till the end of the season.

So far he has not had the "I'm the boss" moment, and i don't think he has earned that respect from the players either.

He just seems gullible and anything goes type of guy at this point.

Oh you, behind my back, appointed a Strategy Director to do the player signings...thats ok.
Oh the crowd doesn't like the player i signed to make an impact in the team...thats ok i'll not play him then.

etc etc...

You want him to be more like the demented idiot we sacked before him ?

If he'd gone down that road he wouldn't be in a job today. Any manager who thinks it's their way or the highway will never manage the club under NESV.

There is a fine line between autocratic dictatorship and authoritative leadership. Rafa may have transgressed at times to the former, but he had the essential leadership ability that a person in LFC's manager role should have had.

I'm doubting if Roy has any of that. So far he has come across as a rank loser....

If i was working under him, i'd find it hard to respect him.

The winning habit affords managers slack to make mistakes. Stubborn authority will be sneered at until such time that Roy has earned the respect of the players and the fans.

Roy did come out with the "I am the Boss" statement when Comolli was appointed. Maybe he is gullible but as Mark pointed out not stubborn, which suggest that he'll learn quickly from his mistakes. I do believe that he'll be here until the end of the season after which Henry will appoint somebody more dynamic.

"Demented Idiot". Ugh.

Anyway, I think King Julian's point is a fair one, however no one has the "I'm the boss" moment until they gain the ability to have it by winning consistently.

Rafa had many I'm the boss moments, all of which he believed were good for the club, and some were, and some weren't. In the end, he didn't have the leverage to keep doing it, because he lost. While Hodgson just doesn't exude any authority in what he says, people will ignore it or focus on it, depending on how many points we get at Stoke, to begin with.

Dont you just love the ambition of our manager. What a fucking loser.

I have to say that this was the bit that struck me first

We're of the same opinion of Poulsen at it seems a lot of Barca fans are of Masher at this stage.

Maybe they'll want to swap?

Poulson: "Budgie's not shite"

Hahahaha...

Haha okay, he's not great, but I was out of order for my original comment so it has been retracted.

roy's had a terrible run of luck with his press conferences so far: of all the words in the english language that could escape his mouth, it always seems to be the ones precisely calculated to most humiliate him which get out.

he must be getting quite exasperated by it all.

It would be a lot easier to like Hodgson if he just stopped talking wasn't Liverpools manager.

There is an expectation lowering quote like that buried in nearly every interview with him, its sickening to watch this club be managed by a guy who aspires to nothing more than mediocrity

Perhaps this will tie in with the rumours of Comolli look to France for another midfielder. Poulsen did enjoy a good spell at Sevilla.
According to Ballague, Sevilla want him back. Sell sell sell
I'd sell in jan if sevilla are serious. poulsen is worse than frigging diao.
