The appointment of Souness made perfect sense at the time. Which just goes to show you never can tell.
I wasn't convinced by it personally. On the one hand I was glad we'd found someone with a Liverpool background, but on the other hand I was concerned that Souness would try and change everything in sight, as he had at Rangers, when what we needed (I thought anyway) was partial and more gradual change.
Exactly.

There was most certainly NOT unanimous approval over the Souness appointment.

And the first thing he did was throw out the baby with the bath water a la Rangers - which proved pretty disastrous.
I think there is a fair amount of hidsight going on here, Sounness was red through and through and the vast majority of fans saw him as a continuation of the glory days in management after Dalglish. Yes he messed it up, but not many people i remember at the time knew that that would happen.

No hindsight about it, mate. You may quite well be right about the majority of the fans, but one or two of us weren't so sure. It's our own views we're representing here, not an attempt to sum up those of other people.

Cheers mate, but that aint me in the pic.

I always thought you were green, ugly and had fangs.

Souness was perfect on paper though. Let's face it, if there was a manager available now who had been our captain and best midfielder, and who had - in his first managerial job - won the Scottish League three times in four seasons, no other candidate would get a look-in.

Could well be, and maybe Avvy and I (and I know one or two other Reds who felt the same way) were out on a limb at the time. Nonetheless I had doubts from the very start. At Rangers, Souness had had to rip the whole club up by the roots. I got the feeling he was being hired to do the same to us and, his apparent qualifications for the job notwithstanding, I really didn't want to see that happen.

The club did need to change though. Too many old players, too many not-good-enough players. Not enough English players. We'd actually been in decline for a couple of seasons and something radical was necessary. Obviously, in retrospect, what happened was too radical, or just not done properly, but I certainly thought it was a great appointment at the time.

I guess the crux of this is how far-reaching a change we needed. Yes, we were slipping, but I honestly didn't believe we'd slipped as far as all that or, therefore, that we required a total dynorodding, so I was concerned that too much of the basis for our success up till 1990 would be jettisoned if we did get one.

Blimey Jules.... I believe you but.... I just remember feeling chuffed.

Remember last time an English manager went on a good run to the UEFA cup final, and then was asked to make a big step up?
Yeah. Three years later he was a league champion
😉

Holy shit. What if MacClaren is our new manager....
Id probably stop supporting us.

He's a good coach but i would like to see someone who plays more attacking football.
i want to see someone who wins, if you want attacking football then zdenek zeman is your man (he will come with a health warning though, not for the weak hearted)

A MacClaren appointment is as close as you can get to inserting an eel in the arse of every Liverpool supporter in one fell swoop.
I can't begin to tell you how I'd feel about it Gene. I genuinely don't think I could support that man.

Just praying he doesn't fuck it all up.

Mate, we all have our moments. On the other side of the balance sheet I thought Dalglish was overrated at Celtic and groaned when we bought him to replace Keegan, so there you go. 😉

I like Roy. I won't cry if we appoint him, even though theres a few ahead of him in my preferences

What this chump said!

We shouldn't have sacked Houllier if our next manager is Hodgson.

Can we ask Houllier to be our caretaker boss? At least Gerrard will be contend to stay.

Honestly, McClaren should not be mentioned on this site. That would be scary!

King Kenny should step up. How many top managers are out of work and available? Would any top manager want to enter the battlefield that is Anfield which is so shrouded in uncertainty and politics? It would take someone with a steel set!

I'd still be happy to get Hodgson.

I trust him, like him, and admire his most recent achievements a lot.

I missed this the first time round.

I was a bit concerned with Souness' appointment as I thought it was just some desperate attempt to continue the boot-room tradition, but I was still hopeful that he'd do a job.

It never occurred to me that it was going to go the way it went.
