Roy Hodgson desperate for new striker

Liverpool manager Roy Hodgson has spoken of the club's need for a striker ahead of talks with new owner John Henry next week.

New England Sports Ventures' principal owner will fly to England in the coming days and remain in the country to attend Liverpool's clash with Chelsea at Anfield next Sunday.

But the primary purpose his visit is to hold talks with the Kop boss over potential targets for the January transfer window
and top of Hodgson's agenda is providing support for Fernando Torres in the Reds' front line.

Despite claiming in September that his squad was currently overstaffed, Hodgson claims that Liverpool are still lacking firepower and claimed that Ryan Babel and Dirk Kuyt were 'non-specialists', despite the Dutch duo arriving at the club as natural strikers.

He said: "That's clearly not enough. A club like Liverpool shouldn't have to rely on non-specialists like Dirk Kuyt or Ryan Babel ;doing a job; up front when they are primarily wide players.

"We have the same problem with the reserves. We don't have any strikers and a winger called Nathan Eccleston has to play up front.

"'In training, I can't have practice games where each team plays a 4-4-2 because I don't have the front players to do that.

Liverpool have been linked with various goal poachers in recent weeks, including Roma's Mirko Vucinic and Athletic Bilbao hit man Fernando Llorente, and Hodgson is hopeful that he can capture three players who will bolster his ranks when the market reopens.

He added: "There is more chance of a striker coming in this window because we had no money last time. Everything was so convoluted with the ownership issue.

"The first thing people say when I walk down the street is 'We need a front player'. They can't all be wrong and we aren't that stupid either."

Wow, so he is not able to train in a 4-4-2 formation and that is the reason why we suck.

Between Torres, N'gog, Kuyt, Babel, Jovanovic and Amoo etc he is not able to find four forwards to play in 4-4-2 in training? Shocking.

Kuyt has played successfully in a 4-4-2 for us with Crouch and Torres on several occasions. Jovanovic's game seems well suited to play that role as well.

I think Vlad's been following Roy around Liverpool shouting at him with a megaphone.

I like the line that they 'can't be that stupid'.

He has to intimate 'they' are a little bit stupid or he'd be forced to concede that they're also right about him being a defensive geriatric journeyman coach who needs to be replaced sharpish.

I was of the understanding that whilst Ecclestone can play out wide, he is a striker by trade. That's where I've seen him play most often in recent years.

I can't imagine I'm more well informed than Hodgson, so I'm guessing I'm wrong?

So the general opinion is that Hodgson is wrong and the squad has loads of red-hot strikers available?

I wouldn't say 'red-hot' but definitely 'options' that aren't being explored..

Of course we need more forwards. I just think some of his statements seem a bit misleading on the surface of things and it almost seems to be putting players down in order to make a point.

In reserves for example we have the likes of Ecclestone, Ngoo, Pacheco, Brouwer (is he still at the club?), Simon and Saric who all play up front. There may not be a budding Torres in that lot, but there are plenty of options to choose from.

This is Premier League football we are talking about. To score goals in the Premier League, you either have to possess world-class skills or be built like a fucking gorilla.

Hodgson was talking about the reserves as well, which is what I was clearly responding to.

And Ngoo is built like a fucking brick shithouse.

If Roy doesn't show a little faith in Ngog, Ngoo or any of the young brigade, he'll never know if they can make the step up.

None of the youngsters who featured for the first team have yet let us down.

Alternative, get Adebayor!

Oh FFS this is getting very very fucking tedious.

Everything Roy says gets fucking sniped at and picked over trying to find fault.
Firstly in his quote he said "we are not that stupid", secondly Ngoo is an under 18 player, who as it happens is having to step up to the reserves presumably of the reasons highlighted. Roland, it's not about giving N'gog a chance , he has had loads, he is just lightweight and shit.
Dirk was supposed to be a specialist but was not very good at it and found a niche out wide , which he is not that good at either. Babel? well we have been arguing ourselves since he arrived as to what his best position is , coming up with the resounding answer (other than one or two notables) that he does not have one. He is certainly not an "up front " specialist.

Roy on this occasion is right and it is one of the issues that has affected us this season, last season and some of the one before.

What are you getting so worked up about?

Everyone is in agreement that we need to buy another striker (or two).

If Hodgson said "the Earth is spherical" there would be a long thread full of people arguing that in fact the Earth is flat!

;D

The Earth is obviously round, but Budgie's so fucking old he was probably alive when it was an active topic of discussion.

It was about the time that he last won an away match, the insipid useless budgie-faced fucking twat.

It doesn't seem like that from reading this. I have/am pretty disappointed thus far with Roy's decision making both in the press and on the pitch, but on this one he is blob on.

I thought we were all going to be cumming in our undies about the spanish wunderkinder, you know Pacheco. I thunked we'd have seen more of him anyways, since he tonked everyone in that under 19s in the summer.

Sick of saying the same thing Vlad, it's ridiculous.

I don't think he has got what it takes. Decision making is pretty poor. A bit like Yossi but so far without the goals.

Hope he proves me wrong given a chance.

You say that, but his mate Canales who wasn't as good has had a few games for Madrid.
[/quote]

Part of the issue may be the expectation that is a burden for him, the buzz around the ground when he's coming on. Maybe he's trying too hard to make something happen and he's delaying his instinctive pass/shot to try something smarter.

Of course I'm just typing words here without anything to back them up but could there be something in it?

Vlad and co. I'm not sure why you guys are getting worked up? Nobody is attacking Roy! Relax!! We agree that we need another striker. Obviously that can only happen in January which is some way to go.

Roy has to use the resources at his disposal. We have plenty of young talent albeit unproven in the Premiership. They've shown enough talent and hunger. Game time will give them experience and confidence but we must be smart about it.

Sometimes we need to gamble to get a result. Roy is all about safety first.

We needed a striker in the summer, however Roy in his infinite wisdom decided that we should loan out an attacking central midfielder in order to spunk our entire budget on an attacking central midfielder (despite having one of, if not the best, attacking central midfielders in the world already playing there). We also signed a wide attacking midfielder under the premise that we would be playing him in the centre of the midfield.

Joe Cole was a freebie.

What are you blathering about man? We were after loads of strikers in our budget in the summer right up to deadline day, the think that fucked that up was Babel not going
The attacking midfielder you speak of was Cole on a free I presume

Or Miereles , in that case that has been answered. 😉
