Just saw a compilation of the original Ronaldo today, and was reminded just how sensational he was. A true genius. He really did have everything. Super skills, super strength, super speed, super accuracy and power with his shots, and always had an eye for the odd pass too. His movement off the ball was super good too.
But for his injuries and the brazillian willingness to get fat later on in life, he truly could, or should have been the best ever, for me at least.
What's the general consensus on him here?

Seriously though, it might be over the top but I think he's one of a kind. Revolutionised the striking role.
Suddenly there was a striker on the pitch who played alone upfront and created goals himself. I can think of many like him at that time or before him.

It's a bit of a hard one to judge, because most 'best ever' contenders tend to be number 10s: Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Messi, Zidane.

They don't really compare that easily to Ronaldo. But he's probably the best actual striker the game has ever seen.

Van Basten, Puskas. It's a difficult one to call. Still, was a great player and we all remember THAT goal

The fat ronaldo is one of, if not the best number 9's I've ever seen. A monster of a striker, could do everything and had everything. Thank feck the scum didn't get him when they were sniffing round him.
Had a phenomenal scoring record at every club he went to.

That's as sexy a youtube compilation as you're ever likely to see. Shame about the music.

I've seen little more than clips of Pele and it's difficult to ignore his goal scoring record, but Ronaldo is the best striker I've ever seen. Such a complete player.

Loved him. I can never decide between him and Zidane as my favourite.

I know what you mean. Zidane is still my favourite player.

The Cruyff turn off a high ball at around 0.39 is one of my favourite football moments ever. Ronaldo is obviously a legend but literally every time I watched Zidane he did something that made me laugh, gasp, squeal, question the laws of physics, or all of the above.

The guy was a breath of fresh air, he had more interest in staying on his feet and scoring unlike these pansies in the game today

That champions league volley was the shizness, I have a little preference for Ronaldo though for the imagination and goals.

Like others have said Romario always sticks in my head from world cup 94 time, great player.

Putting his footballing ability aside - he had a great smile after he'd scored, not the scowling or pretentious fuck faces worn by some of the most talented players in recent ages. The greats properly celebrated goals even though they'd done it a million times already.

I've never seen anyone who was as born to play football as Zinedine Zidane. He was so graceful and classy that you felt you needed classical music on in the background whenever he way playing. A real artist.
Ronaldo is, in my mind, the finest striker to play the game. Strength, incredible acceleration, skills of the best wingers, and he could finish anything. The definition of a 'complete player'.

I always rated Ronaldinho higher, Ive never seen a player play as consistently with the level of skill Ronaldinho did. Zidane is my favourite player of all time, just loved watching him, effortless class, but Ronaldinho is the most skillful player Ive seen, its a cliche but he could do things with a football that other players, even those who were world class, would just look on in astonishment. His career path followed much the same trajectory as Ronaldos though, now Kaka is doing something similar

The greatest player I've ever watched and barring injury would have been known as the greatest of all time.

Won a lot in 2002 as well 🙂

I was just about to bring up Ronaldinho in reference to the " he did something that made me laugh, gasp, squeal, question the laws of physics, or all of the above" quote. Ronaldinho was like that but took it to the next level. Ronaldo was a force of nature, but during a 3-4 year period I think Ronaldinho was probably the most interesting and entertaining player I've ever watched and perhaps ever will.

Fuck 'em all, Edmundo was THE dude.

I remember seeing his outside of the boot toe poke goal against Chelsea and laughing, it was absurd to even attempt it, he had a tiny sliver of goal to aim for, hes surrounded by defenders and he plays the lowest percentage shot you could think of and absolutely nails it, you cant defend agaisnt that because you have absolutely no reason to believe its even possible to pull off

Ronaldo had a fantastic combination of skill and power but Ronaldinho had more imagination and creativity than anybody Ive ever seen, whats more he had the ability to back it up

If Neymar ever joins up with this Barcelona side you might have a contender. He's stupendous.

Rivaldo deserves a mention in this club surely as well. There was a good 2 year period where I thought he was the best player in the world.

Zidane is my favourite player from that Era but Ronaldo and Ronaldinho and Romario were all amazing.
