From Daily Star:

£15M KOP BID FOR KID ROMELU LUKAKU

ABOVE: Liverpool will make a £15million bid for the Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku Liverpool will make a £15million bid for the Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku
9th January 2011 By Paul Hetherington

LIVERPOOL will make a £15million bid for the Belgium striker who has been hailed as the new Didier Drogba – Romelu Lukaku.

They will try to land the Anderlecht wonder boy either in this month’s transfer window or follow up with a new approach in the summer.

With the departure of Roy Hodgson, the deal is being driven by Damien Comolli, the club’s Director of Football Strategy.

Lukaka is only a kid at 17 but he stands 6ft 3ins tall, weighs 14 stone and is already a full international with Belgium.

Given the comparisons with Drogba, it’s not surprising Chelsea are interested in the son of former pro Roger Lukaku, who played for Zaire in the 1974 World Cup.

And competition for the powerful striker doesn’t end there. Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United has him on his radar – and Arsenal have also checked him out, along with Italian giants Inter Milan and Juventus.

And there is reported to be interest from Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid, where former United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has gone on record to say how impressed he’s been with Lukaku.

That’s why Comolli is so keen to get the deal done quickly for Liverpool.

I'd prefer Suarez as he's that much older and more experiences to have a MASSIVE impact now, as this guy is still just a kid who won't peak for another 6 years or so.. But I'd still be verrrryyy satisfied with this signing..

He hasn't got in just yet Roland, but there has been confirmation that we have bid or enquired about him.

Hopefully he's more Drogba than Cisse.
Btw story is bull.

Its more to do with the tweet at the top with confirmation from his club than the daily star story Modo

I want both. Seeing as we're playing a 4-3-3 at the moment imagine these 3 in the final third..

Suarez Torres Lukaku

We already can't defend! But yes, it would be entertaining, we'd probably look like a Keegan team though.

I know I wasn't being serious on that as a viable formation, as our 4-3-3 at the moment is more of a 4-5-1 or 4-1-4-1..

We need wingers. Badly.

Sport/Foot mag in Belgium claims #Lukaku has agreement to join #MCFC in July. Lawyers in Manc today, been working on deal for 15 days

If true, I've just about had enough of those cunts at City.

Where will he play? They have had to ship out a load already, Bellamy is in Cardiff, who on the staff playing now will go to make room for him?

Dzeko, Tevez, Balotelli, Santa Cruz, Bellamy, Jo, Sturridge, Adebayor, Caicedo - they'll soon have enough for a full team of strikers.

Negredo back-up if Suarez bid fails

19th Jan 2011 - News

Liverpool are ready to intensify their pursuit of Luis Suárez, the Uruguay forward, but Ajax's £20 million valuation has led the Merseyside club to approach Seville about Ãlvaro Negredo as a fall-back option.

Kenny Dalglish and Damien Comolli, the club's director of football strategy, have identified Suárez as their leading target for the January transfer window, but Ajax have so far proved tough negotiators.

The Dutch club have adopted a more realistic stance since placing a prohibitive £35 million valuation on Suárez when he scored three goals in last summer's World Cup finals, but Liverpool have so far been frustrated in their attempts to strike a deal.

Although Suárez, 23, is the first-choice target identified by Dalglish and Comolli, their interest in Negredo is also strong. The 25-year-old was previously a target for Rafael Benítez during his spell in charge of Liverpool, but the Spain forward's form for Seville this season - added to concerns about the cost of a deal for Suárez - has revived interest at Anfield, leading Comolli to instigate firm inquiries about his availability.

Liverpool's owner, Fenway Sports Group, is cautious about overspending in the transfer market, having been alarmed to discover the excesses of previous regimes. But despite the inevitability of missing out on Champions League revenue next season as they continue to languish in the bottom half of the Barclays Premier League, they have resolved to invest in the squad this month to commence a long-term rebuilding programme.

Other targets include Stephen Warnock, the former Liverpool left back, whom Aston Villa have indicated a willingness to offload - perhaps initially on loan - once they find a replacement. Ashley Young, his Villa team-mate, is a more distant target who is likely to attract interest from several leading clubs at the end of the season, while Dalglish, the manager, would also like to strengthen his central defensive options.

Identifying a crop of younger players is another priority for Comolli but it remains to be seen, given their more immediate needs, whether they will be able to rival Arsenal, Fulham, Manchester City, Manchester United and others in the pursuit of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the muchcoveted 17-year-old Southampton winger.

Liverpool hope to raise funds and reduce their wage bill by offloading out-of-favour players such as Ryan Babel and Milan Jovanovic, the Serbia forward who has made no impression since arriving on a free transfer from Standard Liège.

The club announced yesterday that they had accepted an offer from Hoffenheim for Babel but while the German club's bid, believed to be in the region of £6 million, is so far the most acceptable to Liverpool, it remains to be seen if the Holland forward will agree to the move, with Ajax and Juventus interested in taking him on loan.

Jovanovic's name has been circulated around Europe as Liverpool look to sell him, but they may end up having to cover a significant portion of his wages, believed to be in excess of £70,000 a week.

Christian Poulsen is another signing who is already surplus to requirements, while Paul Konchesky would be allowed to leave were it not for the fact that, having played for Fulham this season before his move to Anfield in August, he is not eligible to play for another club until next term.

Dalglish has yet to taste victory in his first three matches since replacing Roy Hodgson, but Steven Gerrard, the captain, said yesterday that he hoped the Scot would remain in the position beyond the end of the season.

"I want to do everything in my power to ensure that he stays here for a long time, beyond the initial six months," he said. "I would love nothing better when the end of the season comes than for us to be on the back of a good run of results that ensures he gets the job full time."

This story has been reproduced from today's media. It does not necessarily represent the position of Liverpool Football Club.

I don't want Negredo, hopefully thats just a smokescreen.

Lukaku to Citeh eh, that must mean Balotelli and Tevez are on their way out. Ballotelli said yesterday that he wants a transfer to Ac Milan in the future, so that may happen.

Citeh are really starting to piss me off.

Its like when Chelski bought every fucking target we was after in 05 and 06 SWP went there and sat on the fucking bench for years and would have been a regular starter here

Michel Platini has warned that the likes of big-spending Manchester City and Chelsea, and some of Europe's biggest clubs, will have to 'face the music' if they do not comply with UEFA's new financial fair play rules.
UEFA's latest figures show that financial problems affecting European clubs are getting worse, with spending on player wages up almost 10 per cent - and increasing at a faster rate than income.
Under their new rules, clubs will face possible bans from European competition from the 2014/15 season if they spend more than they earn in the three years before.

Hey big spenders: City have just splashed out £27m on Dzeko (right)
Manchester City's recent £121million losses mean they are the club in England facing the greatest difficulty to abide by the rules - even though owners are also allowed to inject £12m a year (15m euro) into their club.
Leading Italian clubs also face problems but UEFA president Platini said whatever their stature, the European governing body would not hesitate to take action.
Platini, speaking at UEFA's headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, said: 'If a club doesn't fall in line and follow the same rules as everyone else then it will be time to face the music.
'Certainly it is not something we want to see. Our objective is not to put clubs into financial difficulty. Financial fair play is to help them escape from this devilish spiral and have a viable economic strategy in the long term.

Different direction: UEFA president Michel Platini is admant that football clubs must turn their backs on spending more than they earn
'This is not a witch-hunt, this is so they no longer continue blindly and mindlessly.'
Manchester City have already sent officials to meet UEFA about complying with the financial rules.
Andrea Traverso, UEFA's head of licensing, said: 'We are in talks with the club - they are aware of the rules and they probably have a strategy to raise their income. They have been to see us and they are confident that they can manage this challenge.'
Platini added: 'Last year in Abu Dhabi I met up with the owner of Manchester City and he promised they would live with the rules and regulations.'
The European Clubs' Association (ECA) has thrown their weight behind the new rules. ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said: 'It's time to step on the brake and bring a bit of rationality to football.'

I think the difference between signing new players now would be Top 10 (possibly Europa League) vs. a Relegation fight.

We should be trying to ship out as much of the deadwood as possible. The problem is that they're on quite high wages and are unaffordable to most teams.

As for enquiries, everybody makes them. No concrete evidence of any bids though. Can't wait for some new talent for the first team.

Citys wage expence is bigger than what they earn in terms of revenue from their home games during a season. That is insane!!

Tevez and Yaya Toure earn more in a year than the whole squad of Blackpool.

If they get into the CL under the new rules its a joke. I despise them.

City's squad is the best in the league, without a doubt. i fucking hate them
it'll be fascinating to see how they try to get in line with these uefa rules, though. well, fascinating to me, anyway.

their wage bill actually exceeds their turnover, and it's not as if they can just flog a load of deadwood, because most of that will be on contracts that city will have to subsidise even after they've sold them (i bet they're still paying a fair chunk of santa cruz's wages, for example).

i can see them more or less giving away some of these players in the summer, just as an enticement to clubs to take on their contracts. players like SWP, lescott and adebayor will probably go for peanuts, as in less than £5m each, just like santa cruz did.

Indeed, it would be interesting if UEFA can put their money (pardon the pun) where their mouths are as regards financial fair play.

I thought Santa Cruz was on loan ?

oh, maybe he is. i thought i'd read it was a £3m deal somewhere...not followed it closely tbh.

i know people are sceptical about uefa enforcing these rules, and i get that, but it's hard to see how they can back down now having made such a song and dance about it. it'll be interesting, no doubt. city claim they're fully aware of the requirements and are planning accordingly so maybe they'll find a way round them: all i'll say is, they're meant to have a rigourous planning procedure for all their signings, and that hasn't done them a lot of good.

If City's plan is to increase their income I really do think they're going to struggle...
