Rodgers on Skrtel and Carra

And he gets the boot into Martin here a wee bit....and Carra, gets the nod

"The Liverpool manager confirmed Jamie Carragher will make his 150th European appearance for the club against Zenit. Despite describing Carragher as his "best defender" following the first leg in Russia, Rodgers says he was correct to give Skrtel and Daniel Agger time to develop their central defensive partnership during the first half of the campaign.

Rodgers explained: "Initially we lacked goals, defensively we were alright. Obviously we are trying to look to the future in terms of giving the two central defenders an opportunity to form a partnership. It is one of the few positions that I don't want to change, if I can. Your two central defenders are your pillars.

"I just got to the stage where I felt that – and this had nothing to do with how Martin Skrtel was playing – we needed to be more vocal. The team was quiet and lacked organisation and leadership on the field. My gut feeling was to put Carra back in.

"His performance level since then has been remarkable, really. Why did I not do it earlier? Sometimes it takes time for you to see it. That is the simple explanation."

Don't see the problem with what he's saying. No dig there at all. Carra is more vocal and better leader than skrtel and agger.

Why does he do this stuff in public? He needs to keep his (increasingly gobshite) mouth shut and sort out such problems behind closed doors.

What problems? I think you're reading localny's point and over-reacting. There's so much press these days and obligations to do media, it's difficult not to get caught up in such discussions, all he said was as a team he thought we lacked a bit of leadership, he said he wasn't criticising anyone, so why do people have to then get all sensationalist about it?

"The team was quiet and lacked organisation and leadership on the field"

If that isn't a problem then:

a. Why did he mention it?
b. Why did he bring Carra back in?

Even though he said it was nothing to do with how Skrtel was playing (which seems to contradict his previous comments about Skrtel and Coates' performance against Oldham), by direct implication he's now labelled Skrtel a poor organiser and communicator. He needn't have announced that to the public. He could have kept his mouth properly shut and worked on things behind the scenes. It's been widely discussed on these forums that Rodgers blames people openly. This is another example of that.

Everyone can see that Skrtel has lost his starting CB position to Carra. Is it really better to not say anything about it? I don't think so. People will be talking about this anyway, why not have the manager explain his thinking a little bit? This is 21 century, people.

Both Agger and Skrtel are captains of their country, so neither should be lacking as leaders, and if they aren't vocal enough they surely just need telling to change that - they're grown men for gawd's sake. So I suspect that aspect is merely an excuse. Skrtel's out because of his form, pure and simple.

Yes now, these lads need a little bit of criticism. Arm around the shoulder is not working. So yes, he is vocal here, and Martin's vocal and leadership skills. He's being critical, and it's appropriate.

So if a Journo asks him before a game why he has dropped sktrel and put carra in after playing skrtel/agger all season, he should just refuse to comment? Tell the journo's to do one? If he does that they'll be all over him like a pack of wolves and the club. They'll probably have us linked to Jimmy Savile inside a week.

He's trying to play fair and be honest, and to be fair, he slagged players off earlier in the season to the press and it worked and they sorted themselves out, so he can keep it up for all I care.

It's a breath of fresh air compared to kenny last season. I love the bloke, but his interviews every week drove me up the wall.

On a side note, we could do with a leader or two on the pitch who the players are genuinely scared of when they start going off on one, our team is full of fannies.

I think that's a bit uncalled for Tal, and a bit paranoid if I am honest. It seems to me it was a very mild observation and explanation of his thinking, certainly no worse than our last four managers might have said

So it took him 20 odd games to see he needed leadership at the back?

"I decided the team needed a change and I've brought in Carragher to address the problems I wanted to sort out"

And if the journo asks what problems they are I'd follow up with "Those aren't things I'm going to discuss in the press, me and my team will be working on them behind closed doors".

I don't see a problem with taking that middle ground approach. I'm sure it isn't a million miles away from something Ferguson would say if he wanted to.

Every player he's said is not playing well, has gone on to improve in form. I suspect when Skrtel does come back into the team he'll be back to his form from last season.

He just needs to give out about Lucas, Allen and Reina now and we'll have a great team.

Uncalled for? I am of the opinion that Rodgers is far too talkative and ready to publically criticism players (which is a theme this forum has debated recently) far more than a manager who has done precisely nothing in football should be doing. He's also been contradictory about Skrtel in the space of a few weeks. He described him as too soft against Oldham, which is a clear case of criticising his playing form, and then announces he's been dropped, not because of his form, but because the team needed more communication, organisation and leadership. It's like he's forgotten what he said originally or he's deliberately lying.

And then we'll end up with the mind numbing interviews we had of kenny every week. And his did wonders for the morale and attitude of the players didn't it. As I said, Rodgers unconventional talking honestly in public seems to have done the trick for enrique, downing and henderson, so fuck it I say, let him keep it up.
I wish he'd call reina and allen a pair of cunts in the press though.

Well let's all just agree that I'm in a minority that prefers the manager to be a lot quieter than our current one about issues he has with the performance of his team.

I think it was the gobshite reference, not particularly the opinion that seemed a bit unnecessary

I think it's a ploy to get Carra to reconsider his retirement plans. By giving him games now maybe he will think that he still has a big part to play and that he can still cut it and do a job for the first team.....then again I could be completely wrong
