Robben: Cole, Torres and Gerrard make Liverpool Europe's most feared

ARJEN ROBBEN claims Joe Cole could transform Liverpool into the most feared attacking force in Europe.

Cole’s former Chelsea team-mate reckons the Blues made a huge mistake allowing the England forward to leave for Anfield.

And the Dutchman – who now plays for Bayern Munich – is convinced the Reds now have a forward line to rival the best in the business.

Robben said: “With a front three of Steven Gerrard, Fernando Torres and Cole I think Liverpool will be a real force in the Premier League.

“Last year was a freak year, but if those three click I can see them seriously challenging for the title.

“You look at those as a front three and you struggle to find a better front three in Europe – and I include Barcelona’s in that.â€

That is praise indeed as the Spanish giants will start the season boasting a frontline of Lionel Messi, David Villa and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

But Robben saw Cole at close quarters during his three-year spell at Stamford Bridge and rates him as one of the best players in the world.

The Holland international said: “I read Gerrard’s words about Joe being as good as Messi on the ball and I couldn’t agree more.

“After training with him for so long I can tell you some of the things he can do with a football are as good as anything I have ever seen.

“If Joe is now played in a more central position he will score and create a lot of goals, I see him as a real runner for player of the season.

“He is not just about tricks, though his vision is fantastic. The chances he will create for Torres will help Liverpool to have a trophy-winning season.â€

That will be music to the ears of the red half of Merseyside after Liverpool finished a disappointing seventh last season and again missed out on silverware.

Cole will not get Champions League football at Anfield this season having snubbed offers from both Tottenham and Arsenal.

But Robben claims you could not be more wrong to think that he is just in it for the money after signing a £90,000-a-week contract with Liverpool.

And he reckons it won’t be long before those in the know at Chelsea are kicking themselves for letting the 28-year-old walk away. Robben said: “I think it was a big mistake of Chelsea’s letting Joe go, and I am sure the fans feel the same way. At 28 even with his injuries Joe must still be a £15million-pound player in the current market.

“I am sure Chelsea didn’t want to sell him, he has already come out and said there are political reasons behind the move and I am sure we will hear more on that when he is ready.

“He loved London, he loved the Chelsea fans, and he loved the club so something must have really upset him for him to reject Chelsea’s offer.

“I know Joe and the decisin would have definitely been a footballing one and not a money one.

He should come and join us to create the best front four in Europe then.

I hate him just as much as Van Bommel , Drogba, Rivaldo and Ronaldo for being cheating dirty pricks.

Eh?

All Joe Cole has done for the last few months is hear how great he is, and it's not really well deserved.

You really don't like cole do you farky? He's highly rated by his peers, hopefully he'll now live up to the compliments.

Re the Messi comparison, didn't Gerrard say something similar before the WC?

Slightly bizarre comments from Robben, but I guess they're mates so...

Talking about Cole playing more centrally, and him, Torres and Gerrard making up a 'front three', though, I wonder how that would work. Maybe something like this...

CM - CM

Gerrard - Cole - Kuyt

Torres

We know Kuyt can 'do a job' on the left, after all, having seen him create chances for Holland in the World Cup from that position. The main advantage of that is that it'd allow both Gerrard and Torres to get close to each other (and to Cole) and to get in the box more often. Kuyt would give a more defensive balance to the force, but is also obviously very good at getting in the box and scoring goals. It might work...

Cole has some amazing skills - always has..

i dont think those comments are out of place. IF Gerrard said that Cole was as effective as Messi then he would deserve to be slapped - But Cole has amazing skills - He just has nowhere near the same ability to dictate play.

odd that robben doesn't mention kuyt.
[/quote]

Why? The fulcrum of our attack is Gerrard and Torres, Kuyt does the donkey work and weighs in with goals, but if you want to pick out the World Class players that Cole has joined, it's those two, obviously. I don't think it's the slight on Kuyt some people would probably want it to be.

Jesus Neil. He doesn't mention Reina either. Or Carra. Or Agger. Or Masher. Or Aquilani. Or Johnson.

Does that mean he thinks they're shit?

Christ, he mentions Ibahimovic, Messi and Villa. I guess that means he thinks Iniesta and Xavi are shit too.

Something about him irritates me a bit, but I can't say I don't like him. I just don't see what the fuss is all about, and there has been a disproportionate amount of fuss. Cole, Englands saviour, I can deal with that nonsense. Cole, Liverpools saviour, well, it won't chafe if it's true.

I do think he wants to prove himself, hopefully he'll stay fit and do it.

I won't be seeing it though, I've just learned there's no games on when I'm in Liverpool, because there are a bunch of stupid international fixtures.

I think 'don't like' was a bit harsh, it's clear a few people have reservations regards him being as good as he is on paper. Fair enough.

He's certainly being lavished with a lot praise, and a lot of pressure in the process.

easy marky. I'm not bothered either way, I just thought it was strange robben mentioned liverpool's 'attacking' threat and didn't mention kuyt. I suspect the reason he didn't list xavi and inesta is they play more centrally unlike kuyt who plays further forwards.

Not necessarily but he was talking about a potent front line

He didn't mention Babel either. It's disgusting. He should have been better prepared for this backlash and listed credits.

Or... he was intentionally only mentioning the people we have that he considers to be world class.

why'd he mention ibrahimovic, then? 😉

Gerrard, Torres and Cole, when fit and on song, will be the best attacking trio in the Premiership.

I wonder if Roy's considering a 4-3-3

-------------Torres--------------
-----Cole-------------Gerrard----

With the width of Johnson it could work. The only issue is our midfield, which isn't set up for it at all.

Daily Mail's take on Roy's formation:

I've never thought of Cole as an attacking midfielder in the mould of someone like Deco.

To play in a 4-3-3, he'd kinda have to be, no?

No, what 4-3-3 means is how they've artfully arranged the names on a tiny green graphic of a football pitch, dummy. See by placing the text Joe Cole there, that text will begin tackling, when once it didn't seem to want to.

Aquilani had better be ready to fight for a place, that's for certain.
