"Pele was a great player. He must rank one of the best of all time.
I've said that Tommy Finney was the best I've seen and I'd bracket
Pele, Eusebio, Cruyff, Di Stefano and Puskas up there with him." - Bill Shankly

RIP Sir Tom. Always came across as a lovely man.

God, he really was my grandad's plumber. A real gentleman and by all accounts a great player and on

top of all that a truly great Lancastrian.

One of my mates at University was a guy from Preston called Bob Dawson. He once showed me an England cap which Tom Finney had given him.

It shows the kind of guy Finney was, to give an England cap to a kid. RIP Tom

Before anyone asks: no, I didn't see Tom Finney in action 😀 but he seems to have been an amazing attacking all-rounder. Played right wing for Preston and left wing for England (because Stanley Matthews was around at the same time) equally well, moved to centre-forward later in his career and was just as good there. Somebody asked Shanks once what he thought of a particular player who was flavour of the month at the time (for other geezers, I think it might have been Tony Currie), and Shanks said "Tom Finney's better".
"But Bill, Tom Finney's 52."
"Aye, I know."

Tom Finney RIP.

RIP Tom. I remember him in my 86 Panini football sticker album alongside other old school greats of the game.

About 8 years ago my best mate was invited to Bury v Mansfield as a guest of honour by Bury FC as they wanted him to be their club surgeon. He invited me along and prior to the game we met the other guests of honours including Tom Finney. After the pre-match refreshments (tea and finger sandwiches) we were shown to our seats; I sat beside my mate and next thing I know Tom Finney is sitting on the other side of me. He was as much a gent as everyone says and he thoroughly enjoyed the 0-0 draw and expressed strong support for ALL North West clubs. I have to say it was a huge thrill to watch the game next to such a legend and made even better by my mate moaning for 90 minutes that he should be sitting next to Finney and not stuck beside Neville Neville 🙂
