R.I.P., Gerard. I started supporting Liverpool (partially influenced by my elder brother) during Houllier's reign, about a season or two before our Treble. Thanks for the memories.

Ah wow I didn't expect this. He did a lot for the club to get us back to where we are and he will always be remembered for it. Rest in peace and thanks for 2001 among everything else

Gerard Houllier the former Liverpool manager has sadly died.
He took over in 98 at a time when Liverpool had won literally nothing for 8 years.
He changed the training, the diets, the approach and the habits of the club to modernise it.
In 2001 Liverpool won that cup treble. The league cup v Birmingham. The memorable comeback win in FA cup v Arsenal with two late goals from Owen. The UEFA cup in Dortmund when we won the craziest final ever 5-4 with a golden own goal in extra time. We also qualified for CL for the first time by coming 4th.
The following season he nearly died during a game of a torn aorta against Leeds. He returned to the touch line for a CL game v Roma which we needed to win. The atmosphere was electric and we won.
Gerard wasn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But he was a supporter of the club as a boy and he came from France to teach in the city he loved. He told his then pal that they would return as manager and coach of the football club and that he did.
He was a legend of the club and his passing represents a sad day for the club and its fans.
Rest in peace Gerard, you made Liverpool winners again and I’ll always have the utmost respect for what you did for my club.
RIP Gerard Houllier

I was doing a fine job holding back the tears until I read this.

Poor the Steve Mcmanaman final!!

The original and first legend in my eyes since started following LFC.
So many memories and that unforgettable unique accent, what a man and a legacy.

Ok that’s enough sacrifices at the alter of no20.

We better win the league this year.

Nice he got to see us back on our perch, loved his quote after losing to Utd again at OT where afterwards he reflected, ‘one day we will beat Utd!’ We promptly won 3 times there with Danny Murphy the hero on all three occasions. Interesting my first glimpse of Murphy was also at OT when Owen got sent off after scoring in a 1-1 draw. Murphy was amazing the no 10 role that day. Thought we had signed a super star.

Really sad news. I really liked Houllier. All managers have their ups and downs, their good decisions and bad decisions and their good signings and bad signings, but he was definitely a lot more good than bad, and he left a great legacy.

The 2001 season was obviously what he will mostly be remembered for, and understandably. It gave us a few reasons to celebrate after too many years of winning nothing.

I'm not going to lie and say the football we played back then was great to watch, it wasn't, however, we had success under him and for that as fans we are forever grateful. RIP

RIP Ged.

Thanks for the memories of 2001. That treble winning season will always remain etched in folklore.. and as a manager, that's all you can ask for.

Allez Monsieur Houllier. RIP YNWA.

The free kick against Everton. Ged's face - arms out, mouth open, sparkling eyes, ecstatic. That's how I'll remember him.

He had his own 'doubters to believers' moment. When we lost late on to the mancs in the cup. He was interviewed after and he was so passionate when he said, 'We WILL beat them, I promise you, we WILL beat them'. That was the moment I thought 'He's one of us and he's really going to fight for this club'. And boy did he do so.

Yep mentioned above, loved that interview.

sad news indeed.

after quite sometime in the wilderness and the spice boys fiasco, he started the foundation of the new liverpool.

2001 was indeed amazing and the fans sang hou lets the dogs out for him. good memories of monsieur houllier. and steven gerrard. some people may say that he is a talent and wil still be a first teamer anyway. but i will always credit gerard houllier as the man who brought him to the first team.

and that heart attack and back to the dug out so soon after a major heart surgery. a proud and stubborn man indeed.

RIP

Sad news.

Seemed to be a decent human being and played his part in moving the club forward.

YNWA.
