Are better options over the course of a season than either of their respective replacements.

Oh and Mascherano obv.

and Insua?

Has the squad quality actually decreased over the summer?

By reading the headline I remembered how much I'm not really missing those two players as they would've changed nothing.

Yossi had his great days agreed and I'd always remember him fondly for those but he simply hadn't the standard required to be playing week in week out for Liverpool FC.

I don't even remember Riera anymore.

Cole is better than both of them, and this will prove to be the case once the team is player better as a whole.

Both were desperate to leave because of Benitez, so I'm not sure how much could have been done to keep them either.

The one player we have failed to replace is Mascherano, because his replacement, Poulsen, is fucking muck.

I liked Yossi but I wonder how many Chelsea fans would consider Joe Cole AND £6 mill.fair exchange for him.

Who was the other guy again?

Antonio Rauchera (spellcheck) I reckon it was?

I agree and said at the time that Joe Cole isn't as good as Yossi and so far Joe Cole's given us nothing. I struggle to find out exactly what he gives us and what he was bought for.

I was a huge fan of Yossi but let's give Cole a chance. 7 league games is it?

Few players HAVE given us much this season, which is hardly a reliable guide so far. Joe Cole gives us options right across the three behind Torres, and if anybody would seriously prefer Yossi or even Riera to him I want lots of what they're smoking.

Yossi has scored important goals for us in big matches can dribble, shoot and head the ball, he's a quality player, even Torres said he likes playing with him. Looks like Carlo Ancelotti has been smoking the same thing then.

I wasnt taking into account their personalities or whether they wanted to play for the club at not.

I was just stating that I honestly believe the squad strength has decreased fairly substantially over the summer and that should be taken into account

What do you expect him to say? Cole didn't want to play for him and Yossi's the replacement. Big wow.

Cole will improve and be considered a very good purchase. I'm pretty certain of that.

He's already shown glimpses of being able to unlock defences, although I've seen little evidence of him adapting to the number 10 role. I think he's best on the left, where he can drift in from deeper and see what's in front of him. In the number 10 role he's playing with his back to goal and missing the runs of other players.

Of course our squad quality decreased over the summer, that's why this summer was hideously depressing.

You say ofcourse but everyone seemed to be happy enough at the time.

Yeah on paper cole would start everytime and I know both team form and the system aren't helping any of the new lads cases but I just can't see any improvement anywhere

People were content because they expected things to be far worse. You're ignoring the context of being faced with losing Gerrard or Torres, and everyone knows this squad is still capable of far, far more than it's currently showing. Even after this summer, we're still a top 6 side.

I say of course because it was disturbingly obvious to me.

Meireles and Jovanovic have both been played out of the positions we most need them in though, so my fingers are crossed that the former who I do rate, will do well, and the latter, who I don't, will show some competency.

That's what generally happens when you have a minus spend.

Meireles is a promising player. He's been fucked around by Roy loads already, but he hasn't embarrassed himself in any position, and has shown touches of class in nearly every appearance. Given he's new to the league this is quite impressive, and grants me room for optimism. He'll need a consistent position in order to shine, though, and I hope that's in a CM pairing with Steven Gerrard.

You'd think it'd be pretty obvious that is the best partnership for them, but you have to wonder what Hodgson sees if he reckons Meireles suits the team better at RM or wherever.

The problem is, Onions, that we do not have the holding players to play 4-2-3-1, and we do not have the wide men required to play 4-4-2. We're sort of stuck between the two, and it's messing with Hodgson's head.

4-3-3 seems to be the way to go.

Why pick just these two? There are at least 10 players we've flogged in the recentish past that would still get in our starting eleven, or main squad.

When we sign Kaka, Riera and Benayoun will quickly be forgotten.

Its on..

I really like the look of Meireles, he always seems to want the ball and is positive with his distribution, which is refreshing given some of the midfield play we've seen since Xabi left.

I liked him at the World Cup, but I was always very worried about good impressions at the World Cup.

Im liking the fact that everyone is starting to have a soft spot for him. ive considered him top notch for a long time and i well and truely spunked everywhere when i found out he was coming here.

Players with composure and style make me love this beautiful game. Alonso and Meireles would have been amazing in the same team and it makes me angry that i have to watch Lucas or Poulsen instead...
