Sport.co.uk can confirm that Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur have enquired about the availability of FC Utrecht forward Ricky Van Wolfswinkel who has been compared to Dutch great Marco Van Basten.
The starlet has been monitored closely by the aforementioned Premier League duo, while Arsenal and Newcastle United have also kept a close eye on the striker, however the player’s representative has confirmed Roy Hodgson and Harry Redknapp are considering bids for the forward.
“At this moment it is unlikely Ricky will move because I have not received an concrete offer from either Tottenham Hotspur or Liverpool.†Louis Laros explained to Sport.co.uk.
“I cannot say at the moment if it is serious interest, an enquiry, or just rumours. We are waiting for calls from both clubs, as we need an official offer from Liverpool or Spurs to proceed.
Laros did stress that his client was keen to leave FC Utrecht and seal a move to the Premier League.
“He is eager to move and he finds Tottenham and Liverpool both very interesting opportunities.
“In the game against Liverpool he got injured, and he is still a couple of weeks off being fully fit, but everything has gone well. But as I said, I have not had an offer from either club, so we are waiting.â€
Van Wolfswinkel, a regular starter for the Dutch under-21s and recently capped at full international level, is regarded as one of Europe’s hottest young talents having been closely watched by the continent's top clubs since making his debut for Vitesse Arnhem in 2008.
The hitman has since moved to FC Utrecht where he has established himself as the club's leading front-man and helped them to a seventh place Eredivisie finish. The striker has scored 17 goals in his last 24 appearances in all competitions.
Liverpool’s new Director of Football Strategy Damien Comolli has highlighted the Dutchman as a great prospect for the future, while Newcastle United under manager Chris Hughton were keeping regular tabs on the impressive youngster..
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has kept a close eye on the striker but has admitted that he will only move for a player in January in “exceptional†circumstances. Harry Redknapp is a big admirer of the forward sending regular scouts to watch van Wolfswinkel but reports this morning suggest the North London club are closing in on a £17 million move for Ajax striker Luis Suarez.
Liverpool target Ricky van Wolfswinkel is being touted for a possible deadline day switch.
The Dutch starlet suffered a serious shoulder injury, ironically against Liverpool in the Europa League, just over a month ago but is close to full fitness again now.
FC Utrecht's hitman has scored 17 goals in his last 24 appearances, and his fantastic Eredivisie form was the reason for such strong interest from the Barclays Premier League.
Liverpool are thought to face competition from Newcastle and Spurs for the player's signature, although agent Louis Laros has encouraged the Anfield outfit to make a bid in recent comments to Sport.co.uk.
"I think they are looking to get two players in. At the moment neither me, or the club (FC Utrecht) are in negotiations with Liverpool,†Laros told the website.
"The last day of the transfer period is when most of the deals are completed. If Liverpool come in for Ricky, of course, we will talk and think about it."
The young striker has been in great form in front of goal and has played a leading role in the club's recovery after a dismal start to the campaign. And all of a sudden there were six. Ricky van Wolfswinkel's backheel finish in Sporting Lisbon's 2-1 Europa League victory against Lazio on Thursday marked his sixth goal in official matches for the club, and the fifth consecutive game in which he has found the back of the net.
"Ricky van Wolfswinkel is a very skilled player. He shoots well with both feet, he has good positioning and he is a good header of the ball. His style is similar to that of Marco van Basten, who started senior football under me, too."
- Aad de Mos, former Ajax coach
'KOPTALK sources inform us that Damien Comolli's reason for visiting Holland was to meet football agents Karim el Atmani and Arie Treffers - both of whom work for Sportconsult Nederland, who in turn represent Inter Milan striker Luc Castaignos. It is claimed that the trio met to discuss the 19-year-old striker "and other players who are available for transfer including additional talent represented by Louis Laros".'
Laros represents Wolfswinkel. Not only that but he's also been mooted as trying to negotiate a deal on behalf of FC Groningen for David Texeira.
Sources close to Laros claim that Liverpool were on the verge of signing Wolfswinkel.
"Liverpool were very close to signing Wolfswinkel," said a source involved in the deal. "The fee was agreed in principle but with Ricky out for another couple of weeks, Liverpool are holding off.
"They wanted to conclude a deal now, during this window, because of interest from Manchester United and others."
He added: "They (Liverpool) have been forced to look at other options but Ricky was a major target for them. I think they will come back.
"They have tried for Luuk De Jong but FC Twente want a very big premium this time (January window). These big clubs [from England] have a lot of options so they don't need to be forced into deals. They can wait [until the summer]. It all depends if they are prepared to risk losing players [to their rivals] and how desperate they are to strengthen now."
