The problem is that Sturridge of the last 3 seasons is hardly ever there to tap the ball in. He prefers to hang around the 16 yard box, trying to shoot from there when he gets the ball.
Even worse, he often drifts to the wings - mainly to the right wing, stepping on Salah's toes.
I'd love to see the Daniel Sturridge of 2013-14 again, but I don't think this is going to happen, so I'd rather play Firmino.

Lovely close header against Arsenal. He can still do it. I quite understand the doubts - he's got to deal with that - but he's such a quality forward I don't quite want to give up on him just yet.

Oh I have little doubt Firmino will start, but the qualities listed (working hard, pressing from the front & creating space for others) are all ones that the combination of Salah, Mane & Coutinho already bring.

When the ball bounces back off the keepers hands & just bobbles around in front of goal before a defender clears it & Firmino is standing the other side of the goal though, I know who I'd rather have playong that number nine role.

That said, it's a mouth watering combination either way & should spell goals goals goals.

I look at the matches against Hoffenheim, Arsenal and Sevilla, and compare that to matches like Burnley or Leicester in the Cup, and it's clear to see that chances we create with Firmino in that central role, and Salah and Mane running beyond him, are of far higher quality.

There is undue focus on Firmino's shirt number and starting position - it is tolerably clear from all measurable statistics that he has much more in common with attacking midfielders than a traditional 9. And while we fret about not having a goalscoring striker, Salah already has 4 goals, just 2 behind the leading scorers. Does it matter if he doesn't play as a 9, as long as he is on hand to snap up the best chances we have in the box?

Apparently it matters to some.

The spaz in goal and maybe LB aside that's probably as good as we can put out right now.

After seeing the starting eleven, I'm half certain we will dick these lot and half certain we will fluff our lines
