Realistically , when do you expect us to challenge , if ever ..

I think our last best chance to win the league is when we were top at christmas and then finished second to a very oridinary (but machine like) manu. I think we are miles off challenging for the league but we aren't miles off challenging for top 4. for us to be in with a realistic shot of the title I think we'll need;

a) several of our better players to have a ridiculously good run of form (which pretty much last the entire season)

or

b) the yanks to spend a ridiculously large amount of money (which as we've seen doesn't guarantee quality)

or

c) our kids are so talented they are blooded into the team en masse allowing significant transfer funds to be spent on 'the final piece of the jigsaw'

I don't see us challenging for the league, (i.e. being within 5 points of the league leader until at least april) for at least 3 seasons.

I said a few months back that I thought we were about 10 years behind sides like Man Utd both on and off the pitch. I still think that's about right.

We don't have enough money, enough income coming in on a weekly, monthly, yearly basis, etc, we don't have a good enough squad, players, playing style, manager, etc.

Not only are we still nowhere near challenging our traditional rivals, but we've also been overtaken by clubs we used to be ahead of.

We should hope like fuck for something like 4th cos thats about as good we're likely to get ini the next few years. We're what, 15 pointsnoff the league leaders in fucking December? And we have no European football to distract us.

We have one focus - the league - and we can't even perform in it. Don't focus on luck, woodwork, referees, injuries, transfer windows, formations, tactics, because they are all small by products of the grander issue: that we're simply a long way behind our rivals on and off the pitch and that gap won't bridge itself anytime soon.

Get used to it.
Ryan, how far behind our rivals did you feel we were at the end of the 06/07 season when we finished on 68 points with Arsenal and just clear of 5th place Spurs; a points total closer to 11th than the title?

So who is this better younger manager that can manage our team?
Avb who Kenny has shown up twice?
Rafa Benitez.

I love Rafa, but let Kenny have his first 3 years before we go looking for another manager for Gods sake!

3 years from now, Kenny will be getting a contract extension ....

I thought Kenny only got a 2 year contract? Or are you saying 3 years from now he'll get his 2nd extension?

Im surprised some people sound like they not happy with Kenny in charge.

Ok it looks like 2 big signing gambles are not paying off. but we will still come good under Kenny, I literally love him.

We have played some of the nicest football I've seen since the Evans era. Like, actually passing and moving with speed, flair and intelligence, rather than the dogged styles of Houllier, Hodgson and Benitez.

If only with that 55 million we had signed a world class winger and striker, instead of Downing and Carroll, we would be laughing now. What a massive fuck up and it could really be the mistake that costs him ultimately.

I'm not sure if people aren't happy(well 99% of people anyway), it's more that there are some things that he's done that are questionable. But that would be the case with any manager.

Mate you need to re read this thread and the "4th isn't going to happen". There are some people who are distinctly furious rather than just not happy with Kenny.

Maybe I misinterpreted a bit. Nothing wrong with questioning his decisions if you don't agree with them or they didn't pay off. I thought it was people wanting Kenny out but not wanting to say it out loud for fear of looking like twats.

Ok, then I've misunderstood them. I thought they were implying that he hasn't yet proved himself(this time around ;-)) and has made some questionable decisions.

I think people can be furious if they want, given that we have underperformed in a number of games. But anyone suggesting that he should be fired is just wrong.

I think Mista has nailed it. Make no mistake there seem to be a number who want him fired but they don't want to appear derogatory towards the king.

Kenny certainly has made some questionable decisions and I think he tried to make the team fit Carroll for a while but I believe he's moved back to what he knows best; the football we played end of last season was the best we've done in a decade and I think that's where we're going now. Doesn't of itself guarantee results against the Fullham's of the league but it's a great base to work from.

there's no doubt that kenny has made some odd choices in his lineups but i don't want him gone. we have seen some class football under his management and the results will get better in time. as for us next challenging for the title it's a good few years off in my mind but so long as we make it back into the top 4 before then i would be happy.

I dont want Kenny fired.
But im getting that old 'not giving a fuck' feeling coming again.
I think im kinda at the point now of just not caring whos in charge or anything anymore.
I just want someone to win things for us.

In truth, we are not that far off - and closer than before. Just a few draws and a few pieces of woodwork.

Am concerned we just need more money. better signings. Won't come until we get back into the CL.. and we won't qualify for the CL until we get better players. Catch 22.

Like him or hate him, as predicted the Rafa years look like gold right now. No escaping that.

2015.
KO is usually 1500 and evening matches are 2000 unless there's been a delay so 2015 could be right.

I said in the other thread I think we can challenge in about two years.

Here's why:

Reina - should still be fine in a couple of years time.

The defence:

Enrique - can be relied upon for another 5 years+
Agger - Injury is the only concern, I think he's a captain in waiting
Skrtel - Still improving, and still young enough to improve further
Kelly - Probably won't be a right back in two years time but I'm willing to bet he'll be very good at either CB or RB
Coates - I think he'll work out well over the long term

Carra will be more or less done but we'll also have Flanagan and Robinson hopefully coming through. I don't want to see Johnson here in two years time particularly not at right back. He's losing his physical gifts steadily, and doesn't have a whole lot else to offer. So we maybe need to sign a good right back in the next couple of years depending on how Kelly progresses.

Midfield:

Lucas, Henderson, Adam - All going to be here. Adam will be what he is now, and that's good enough. Henderson is going to get better as he moves into the middle and grows in confidence. We could certainly do with a DM, since I don't see Spearing having a long term future here. Gerrard will still be making cameos. So at centre mid we're looking okay in the future. I nearly forgot Shelvey.

Downing - I think he'll need replacing in 2 years time, that's why I wouldn't have signed him in the first place. Sterling looks like a guy who might be able to step into the role in 2 years time. Maxi will most likely be gone, as will Bellamy, Kuyt maybe still here but I wouldn't want to be relying on him in the first XI. We still need a right winger and arguably need a few bodies to fill out the squad too.

Up Front:
Suarez - no doubts about him.
Carroll - I'm on the fence here, I've no idea how he's going to pan out- he could potentially be the key to the whole puzzle. If he gets his act together we've got a great chance - if he doesn't we've got more trouble.
Then we need some decent back up to them two.

I basically think we've got the guts of a title winning side in 2 years time, it needs a solid right back and a top notch right midfielder (and some decent squad players) and we've got a team capable of beating anyone. Others can add what they think the chances are of any more youths making the grade with us, but I don't think we need massive investment to turn this squad into challengers. Just patience and no Downing / Keane / Aquilani ... titanic heading for the iceberg type signings.

I should have also added Lucas will be 100% in 2 years time too. I'm writing him off for 15-18 months now.

I'm saying i won't be all over him if he's shit for the best part of a year after an ACL injury. History shows nobody comes back good straight away in any sport with an injury like that

With the squad we had at one point this season I think we could still have put up more of a challenge. City aside, none of the others are any great shakes.
