Realistic goals

So where is everyone at for the rest of the season now?

Pretty shit that any remote talk of a title is dead in Oct, feels like Rodgers in his last season again.

But what is a realistic goal now?

Is top 4 also out of reach?

Even with our shite defence I can still see us making a deep run in the CL.

We are 100% coming out of the group and with the knockout stages not til feb next year we should have Clyne and Lallana back. Not to mention we might finally land someone in Janurary.

So what's realistic?

League - 6th
FA Cup - q/f
CL - q/f : s/f

Maybe one or two against Huddersfield if we're lucky and probably one conceded

We should be aiming for top 4 in the league, obviously, given that we're only 3 points off at the moment. That should still be the goal. But it's already evident that we're not good enough to achieve that bar an almost miraculous turnaround. It's a strange one.

Champions league - whatever. We're not gonna win it, just enjoy it and see how far we can go.

Depressing stuff really. Season is already a write off.

I just don't see us turning the league form around while we are playing CL mid week

I said in the summer that we had to really add quality and depth to the squad because the team couldn't cope with just the league to play for last year. We haven't done that at all and we look shattered already with 9 games gone in the league. I was called out for it at the time, but the summer was a bumbling clusterfuck.

We have been absolutely shit so far and yet only 3 points off 4th so 4th is definitely possible. Getting mane, lallana and clyne back will make a huge difference to our team. I'm hoping the penny has finally dropped with klopp and he will make the signings we actually need in january

The longer we stay in the Champions league the lower we will finish in the league as the squad isn't big enough or good enough to cope with both. It's important that we stay in the Champions league for as long as we can though just to enhance the perception of the club being a viable destination for incoming signings.
I can see the FA cup being sacrificed yet again due to the Christmas and new year schedule and our attitude plus team selection for that competition leaves a lot to be desired and almost anyone can give us a tough game as recent seasons have suggested.

Last time we were this all over the place we won number five. It's on people!

Top 4 is still on. United lost to Huddersfield, Arsenal against Watford etc. We are just as bad as they potentially are at present (ignoring United's start).

Our aim should be very short term - focus on being tight at the back and clinical up top. Klopp needs to dial back our approach from being 100% heavy metal football, to being tight and then pounce in numbers at the appropriate times, rather than all the time..

We shouldn't be thinking more than 2 games ahead at this stage. Get back to winning in the PL and make sure we get out of our Group in the CL. Hopefully then we are still thereabouts come the Jan window and we can BUY A FUCKING CB OR TWO.

Yep I agree, I remember saying we needed a new
Gk
LB
CB x 2
CM x 2
Wide player
Striker

All good enough to start, we got 1 of those disaster

Always worth remembering that when we won it in 2005 we finished 6th in the league, level on points with Bolton, something like 39 points of top (and lost 14 league matches).

The last time we won the Champions League we had Finnan, Hyypia , Carragher , Riise in defence and Alonso and Hamann protecting them. We haven't got a single player in those positions now who is comparable in terms of quality.
There is now way this current defence could go away to Juventus or some team of that quality and get a clean sheet. That's not being pessimistic but realistic.

Expecting 8 new players in the summer was unrealistic, but i expected as bare MINIMUM:

GK
LB
CB
CM
Wide player

I also wanted a striker but i knew klopp loved firmino too much.

I'm still fairly confident despite recent travails.

3rd place league finish.....4th at worst.
FA Cup winners
CL quarter finals at least and potential winners.

*The obvious caveat being that I have been notoriously over optimistic about my beloved Reds for 27 years now :-(

Top 4 is still realistic - even if we buy nobody in January. If we buy a goalkeeper and a centre back it becomes more likely

I'm not bothered about the other comps - I don't see us progressing too far in the CL without a defence. We should give the under 23's a go in the FA Cup, they're going well.

Of course top 4 is realistic as it is every season but just like most seasons it’s highly unlikely. It will go to the 2 manc clubs, Spurs and Chelsea. We will finish 6th.

We don't have the depth in the squad to compete on 3 fronts and I can see us falling between stools after good runs in each. So we will finish 5th, Quarter Finals of the Champions League and FA Cup semi-finalists.

For the moment, we have to get back into a groove, going on a run and winning games. Huddersfield is all of a sudden a huge game for us, but if we can take 3 points we then move on to Maribor (H), West Ham (A) and Southampton (H) before going into crunch games at Seville (A) and Chelsea (H). We then have a reasonable run of fixtures leading up to Christmas.

The look on Klopp's face during the Spurs debacle spoke volumes and he will be thinking long and hard about this team, so it will be interesting to see the line-up for Saturday's game. He's not the type to tear up the whole side, as plenty on here are demanding, but I can't believe he won't make changes that will move starting players out to the fringes. Hopefully that will include Mignolet, Lovren & Can.

Anyone suggesting top 4 isn't realistic is being overly dramatic, it very much is.

I'd love a trophy more than anything, the FA cup is the most realistic, and would be brilliant. It's been 5 years since we won anything, which is feeling like an eternity.

Clyne is on par with Finnair for me but that's about it

Even then we got fuckin 1.

Robertson as I thought has been a complete waste of time

This might be too much down the 'rose tinted glasses' road.. but one of our problems has been breaking down teams who try to contain us. There is a lot of press about our defence (mostly rightly so) - but our losses have come against the top 2 teams in the league.

If this means that mid table teams/ relegation teams are more likely to try to 'have a go' then i think that plays into our strengths of hitting them hard on the break. Could Huddersfield fall into this trap after their win vs United and watching us against Spurs..

Bit harsh on Robertson - not sure what is going on with him but he looked good when he played and he's looked a constant threat for Scotland. I think he'll turn out to be a good purchase, kind of like Trippier & Davies have turned out for Spurs. Both bought as backup but now both starting and arguably better than Walker & Rose were for them too.

When you can't start ahead of Moreno you may as well pack it in.

Maybe he'll turn out to be boss but we needed a LB to walk straight into the team and we haven't seen that yet
