Real Madrid tops football money league as Liverpool FC is named eighth biggest earners worldwide
by Laura Jones, Liverpool Daily Post
Feb 10 2011

LIVERPOOL FC slipped to eighth place in the latest world football “rich list†of finance rankings, after suffering a small reduction in revenue.

According to a worldwide football finance study, the Anfield club fell one place on the previous year, with revenues from last year at £184.5m, compared to £184.8m for the 2008/09 season.

Despite the drop, Liverpool FC still remained in the UK top four, but still lagged behind Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Deloitte Football Money League named Spanish giants Real Madrid as top earners for the sixth consecutive year, with revenues of £359.1m.

Collectively, the world’s top 20 football clubs netted £3.5bn – an increase of 8%on the previous season.

Liverpool’s slight revenue drop, coupled with a strong performance from Italian powerhouse AC Milan, pushed the Merseyside club into eighth place.

The Italian side leaped three places to seventh, thanks to a £25.7m increase in its revenues.

Bayern Munich, Inter Milan and Juventus make up the Top 10.

Despite the UK’s economic downturn, English Premier League clubs featured prominently in the league table, with seven clubs with revenues of more than £89m.

Interesting to see where the other English clubs are.

Surely this will jump hugely when we start qualifying for the champions league again?
[/quote]

But we were in the CL last season.

Yeah, we might fall out of the top 10 for 2010/11 money league, or barely make it, thanks to Man City not making the CL too.

Standout stat-average stadia capacity of top 10 is 66,141, Anfield only 45,522

Its a tweet, but thats a fucking hell of a lot of money we are not gathering

These figures are not very significant especially with the new fair-play rules that will be implemented soon.

Chelsea, Man City and Barca have all made huge losses these last seasons.

At the end of the day, you have to earn more than what you spend to be a sustainable business, which only a handful of these clubs have done in previous years.
Wages is the main issue.

if an avg ticket is £40, we are losing £824,760 a game or £15,670,440 a season, not even considering cup games

another tweet showing what an improved stadium would bring to revenue.

Stick that extra 15M on our 8th place, and we jump up a bit don't we.

Even more factoring in Cup matches.

The Deloitte figures must be in euros?

Correct

std chartered deal will compensate for that to some extent, as would a very long (ie winning it) run to the EL final.

we really need to be getting back in the CL soon, though. it should be doable next season if FSG are prepared to invest ~£30m plus whatever our normal budget is: it'd pay for itself very quickly if we buy the right players.

If Kenny keeps us winning then we could potentially qualify for next season.

Do those figures include Rafa's pay off?

No its incoming money only.

I wonder if it includes what we get for player sales. So for this season the 50 mill for To**es will count?

I'll download it tomorrow at work as its available on our intranet. Wasn't in today to check it out.

This shows the revenue breakdown in terms of Matchday %, Broadcasting % and Commercial %. We seem to be heavily reliant on tv money.

I thought we had the best shirt sales in Europe?

How are City getting more revenue than us on the commercial side?

Its a percentage, they're not getting more than us. Its just taking a more important part of their income

Perhaps some of the Sheiks companies use commerce to inject money into Citeh?

But they are earning only slightly less (relatively) so they are earning a similar amount.

no, as le chac points out, it's a fair difference. that breakdown of revenues looks pretty healthy to me at a glance - we'll be doing very well if we manage to expand the stadium. arsenal are taking around 65m euros matchday income than us, whereas out total revenue is only 50m euros lower: there should therefore be every chance of us getting close to or even exceeding their total income if we expand to and fill a 60,000+ seater stadium.

Preston North End owner Trevor Hemmings is the sixth-richest owner of a football club in the Championship.

The leisure tycoon, who has seen his wealth rise £50m to £550m after the sale of the Blackpool Tower to the resort’s council last year, will also be the richest benefactor in League One where the Lilywhites will play next season.

He will top the £325m fortune of Swindon Town’s Sir Martyn Arbib and Huddersfield Town’s owner Dean Hoyle in the League One rich list, according to The Sunday Times’ Sports Rich List 2011.

The Championship table was topped by Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal (£17.5 billion) and Formula One boss Bernie Eccleston (2.5 bn), who both have stakes in champions Queens Park Rangers, with Bristol City’s outgoing chairman, Stephen Lansdown (£750m) in third place.

The Premier League table is headed by Uzbek Alisher Usmanov (£12.4 billion) who has a stake in Arsenal, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich (£10.3 bn) and Joe Lewis (£2.8 bn) of Tottenham Hotspur.

Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo tops the table of the annual pay of players at £10.6m with Lionel Messi, of Barcelona, second with £9.2m, former North End loanee Andy Carroll finished joint 43rd in the annual wage table, earning £4.4m after his transfer to Liverpool.

Works out to be around 92k/wk for Carroll.

Dunno, but apart from that we're top. Maybe they're selling loads of shirts further abroad.

Looks like we need to do something about the stadium.

Edit: duh, yeah it's a percentage. Maybe need to cut back on the beer a bit.
