I guess with two of the tougher away games out of the way, we're in a pretty good position to top the group - that is if we stop playing like cunts at Anfield.

It's hard to know whether to judge players by Liverpool (real Liverpool) standards these days or by their own. All in all it was a very average performance that doesn't merit any real praise, but in the context of our current situation it was a nice surprise to not see us capitulate in humiliating fashion.

Reina - 7 - Coped with everything well and looked assured.

Konchesky - 5 - At one point I was getting quite frustrated by his constant hoofing, that is till he tried to turn the attacker and lost the ball. After that I was quite happy for him to continue hoofing.

Skrtel - 7 - The odd rash moment, but overall he defended well. MOM.

Carragher - 6 - Fine.

Kelly - 5 - Maybe I'm being too harsh on both fullbacks, but there was a little too much coming in from the flanks and Kelly struggled to find himself at times. Too much hoofing from him as well.

Poulsen - 6 - Few good tackles and distribution was decent.

Spearing - 6 - Another confident display in the heart of the midfield and showing what he did for the reserves - that he likes to get involved in play and can pass well.

Shelvey - 6 - Showed nice signs of class in the first half even if he wasn't involved as much as perhaps we'd have liked him to be. Unfortunately struggled to get into the game in the second half. A bit languid in style, but pretty assured on the ball.

Jovanovic - 5 - Hmmm. Very much a Jekyll and Hyde player.. more Hyde today.

Babel - 4 - Lazy, shit performance. Humour aside, it's depressing that after the initial promise and hope we all thought he possessed, we've had to resort to turning him into a comedy cult figure.

N'Gog - 5 - Improved in the second half and one moment of magic in the box, but overall not great. But then he's a player that prefers to the ball to feet or played into space to run onto. There is no point punting long balls towards him.

Zorba - 6 - Did fine.

Reina (6) - Not much to do but did it well.

Skrtel (7) - Assured defensive performance.

Carra/Greek (6) - Fine.

Konchesky (6) - Erratic performance, but he saved our neck so he's worthy of a 6 at least.

Kelly (6) - Fine.

Spearing (7) - I thought he played well. Moved the ball nicely and got stuck in.

Poulsen (6) Meh, he was okay.

Shelvey (7) Drifted in and out of the game, but showed moments of class, which is a welcome sign at the moment. He can be pleased with himself.

Babel (4) Poor, lazy, uninspired.

Jova (6.5) Much of our good work came through him, but it still seemed an anonymous performance. We needed him to get himself involved much more.

N'gog (5) Erratic as ever. Unlucky with his one real chance.

-------------------

Joe Cole looked sharp and keep to improve a point.

Didn't notice Aurelio.

Konchesky deserves more than 5/6, he made a goal line clearance and a last ditch challenge saving two certain goals.

I think Keni's ratings are way too harsh considering the circumstances we are in.

But he is right in that, this is far from the standard of display we all would like to see.

We had at least three players in there who have played most of their football at youth/reserve level.

Napoli played pretty much their strongest team.

Considering that, you cannot really complain with this result away from home against a side that is 2nd in the Italian league.

We have got 5 points from three games and we are top of the table. So purely from a result point of view....the players deserve better rating. 5s and 4s allround is way too harsh.

I thought Babel showed up for the game. Giving him a 4 is a clear show of bias.

Spidey and one or two aside, I've been one of his biggest supporters during his time here. I thought he was crap today.

Yep, had the chance of the night and fluffed it, his hold up play was pretty poor too considering he's such a strong lad, one good cut inside when he was on the right hand side, but that was about it. N'Gog was infuriating too, they both had piss poor first touches at times, that pass from Shelvey (for N'Gog) was a fucking gift.

Anyway....

Reina - 7 Solid and dependable.
Kelly - 6 Decent enough, alot came down his side though
Carra/Greek - 6 comfortable, thought we looked a bit more composed with Carra in there though.
Skrtel - 7 Threw himself at everything all night.
Konchesky - 7 Best game probably yet, two good clearances and tidy enough in possession.
Poulsen - 6.5 Good defensive play and tidy passes
Spearing - 7 Good, simple play.
Shelvey - 7 Showed glimpses of his positive play and excellent eye for a pass
Jovanovic - 6.5 Some good incisive play and good defensive covering too.
Babel - 5.5As said
N'Gog - 5.5 Ditto

Shelvey and Spearing were very assured on the ball from the first kick, and really looked very comfortable. I think they both earned 7s.

Babel was pretty much one of our worst players.

As an aside, I think Shelvey and Meireles has the makings of a boss CM pairing. And with Cole, Gerrard, and Kuyt behind Torres, our front 6 doesn't look all that bad suddenly. We just need a manager who has the confidence to able to play that week in and week out.

I think i'd go with that.

Konchesky - 6 for me. He defended competently, but was muck when it came to building the play or providing support forward.

It's a bold comparison, but fuck it, Shelvey reminds me ALOT of Alonso.

Really?

I think he's an attacking mid at heart.

That's the impression I get too.

I think you just summed up his probable Liverpool career in one fell swoop.

Fuck, I was actually thinking of starting a thread on this. There's more than an element of Xabi in his game. I don't think he's going to be an attacking mid as he doesn't have the pace and power. His style is a lot more languid and his technique of receiving the ball and laying it off has a lot of similarities with Alonso's. He also tried to chip the keeper from around the half-way line yesterday which gave my heart a little flutter of joy.

I wasn't really talking about position, or pace for that matter, there's just something in his assurance on the ball and his execution of a pass. Maybe I'm just generalising because it's been so long since we've had someone in the middle who's so positive and effective with their play.

Alonso is, and always has been, a central midfielder with a marvellous passing range and the ability to score maybe two goals a season.

He often sits quite deep, and orchestrates play from there.

He isn't very quick, and doesn't really have the quick, tricky feet that one might associate with an 'attacking' midfielder. But that's fine, because he never was one.

He wasn't turned into anything by Benitez. He just became a better version of what he always was.

And Christ how we niss him

Agreed and agreed.

I said in July that Shelvey reminded me a bit of Alonso - or at least more Alonso than Gerrard.

Napoli - 5

The greek, skrtel,carra,reina 6

Konchesky - 4
Kelly -5
Spearing -6
Poulson - 4
Babel - 3
Jovanovic - 5.5
Shelvey - 5.5
Ngog - 5

Cole - 6
Fabio - 5.5

Woy - 4

Shelvey hasn't got the pace to be a new Gerrard. Or the talent.

But he does look a player alright, and yes, there are shades of Alonso, but with perhaps more of an attacking bent.

He should play ahead of Lucas already, although that's probably the shittest compliment ever

Almost agree.

Kelly had his worst game in a Liverpool shirt, Konchesky probably deserves a 6 and Spearing (without the ball) was diabolical.

NGog is a wet fanny. I'd rather have Jason Roberts upfront at the moment.

I can see the Alonso comparisons with Shelvey. I think the most Alonsoesque player in the league, though he plays a different role (and I'm expecting pelters here so bring it on) is Charlie Adam. I've been a fan from his Rangers days. He's always been an extremely cultured passer who seems to find space in even the most congested midfield. I was interested to see how he'd cope with the pace of the prem, but so far he hasn't looked out of his depth in the slightest.
