bump.

Here's a layout to make it easier for ya:

Reina X -

Johnson X -
Skrtel X -
Agger X -
Enrique X -

Lucas X -
Shelvey X -
Gerrard X -

Borini X -
Downing X -
Suarez X -

Subs: N/A

Reina Not a lot to do but clearly has taken on board the Tiki Taka ethos with a bit of dribbling short passing and a chip into midfield - 6

Johnson Seems to have taken his excellent Euro Form into the new season, not a lot to do defensively, got forward and supported and took the goal well -7
Skrtel - Not under any pressure 6
Agger - Ditto, moved out of the defence with the ball was probably the buisre of the two centre backs -7
Enrique - Big improvement on the couple of friendlies he has played and the second half of last year , Borini might have helped with that - 7

Lucas - Nipped in with a few little tackles, gave a few nice little passes, quite impressive for a first competitive game back - 7
Shelvey - I am a fan, but I think he looked a bit off tonight, and put in a coupl of naughty tackles, he needs to watch that - 5
Gerrard - Looked quite sharp and youthful playing through the Euros has been good for him, the advanced role suits him - 8

Borini Great start to his Liverpool career , sharp lively hard working good first touch, might be a little one footed (but so is Capt Fantatstic so hey, so what), linked well with Suarez in particular, and on the same wavelength -8
Downing Fucking Downing, no to be fair he was OK, he started off great and gradually went more and more AWOL as the match progressed, but enough of a show to clutch at the straw of a new start with afresh season - 6.5
Suarez? Oh , I really hope this is taster of things to come this season, he must be a mare to play against, now one knows which way he is going, brilliant turns, 'megs and touches, I had a few tingles tonight, he really deserved a goal. I thought he might have been a littel unlucky with some offside decisions too, not seen the replay yet. Fuck me for a star he works too, we think Dirk worked hard, I am sure Louis does more - 9 (MOM)

Subs: Carra- Was Carra 6, Charles, he fell over once and looked a bit of a pudding, he game one of his usual daft free kicks away , this was in a safe place, but I thought he sprayed it around pretty well when he came on 6.5. Spearing not enough time

regards

Skrtel 6
Agger 6
Enrique 6

Lucas 6
Shelvey 5
Gerrard 8

Borini 7
Downing 7
Suarez 9.5

The skipper looked like he really enjoyed himself this evening. Borini looked good and a home debut goal is most welcome. Suarez was breathtaking.

I thought Downing did pretty well again.

Reina - 6 Not alot to do

Johnson - 7 Good forward play and a couple of good interceptions, still prone to the odd sleepy lapse but what a goal.
Skrtel - 6 Commanding and controlled, little to do, clearly loves playing alongside and looks comfortable with Agger..........
Agger - 7 Measured, assured and busy, always looking to get forward. Looked fucked off before the start of the game.
Enrique - 7 Best performance in a long, long time

Lucas - 6.5 Great to see him back, industrious, constantly keeping the ball moving, looked tired understandably in the second half.
Shelvey - 7 Still think he's the pick of the bunch beyond Gerrard and Lucas, better than Hendo and Spearing by some margain

Gerrard - 8 Busy, great link up play and topped with ANOTHER goal. Great to see him fit and in this kind of form.

Downing - 7 I thought he linked up well with Luis a fair bit last season, showed that again last night, much improved.
Suarez - 8 Fantastic, after his Olympics aswell where he looked jaded, back to his conjuring best.
Borini - 7.5 Great finish, worked hard, linked up well. Very promising. I think he'll frustrate a bit with his play outside the box as he seems very much a forward that will lurk in the box the majority of the time, showing good movement and waiting to pounce - exactly what we've missed.

I agree. Downing played well, and looks a much better player on the right of a Rodgers 4-3-3 than he ever did out wide left in a classical 4-4-2.

Shelvey was too eager with his tackling, but IMO he's a significantly better footballer than Henderson, Spearing and Adam. Made a few mistakes, but overall it's very harsh to say he had a poor game. Showed some fantastic quality on the ball, dropped deep, and sprayed the ball well on many occasions, including the first two goals.

Suarez was brilliant, as per. And surprise surprise, Gerrard was back at his best when playing in the final third.

Thought Borini was pretty underwhelming apart from the goal though.

Yep, agree with all that Mark except Shelvey. Thought he was a bit slow, held on to the ball to long and made some rash challenges. If he keeps it more simple and takes fewer touches it will imptove him. Guessing he's one of the players that still are feeling the effect of pre season.

We switched off 20-25 mins before the final whistle aswell.

Suarez - 8

Christ if that was only an 8 I'd absolutely cream myself with a 9 or 10 !

Reina - 6
Enrique - 7
Agger - 7
Skrtel - 7
Johnson - 7

Lucas - 7
Shelvey - 5
Gerrard - 8.5

Downing - 7
Suarez - 9
Borini - 7.5

It was an excellent performance all round and the only players that I can give less than 7 to are Pepe because he had SFA to do and Shelvey because he was relatively poor (and those sort of tackles are going to get him sent off in the PL).

Great performance overall.

Shelvey however still looks a bit raw to me, I don't think he's quite ready yet to be honest. And with Allen coming in I can see us moving Spearing on, as he's not quite got the level yet either imo.

Oh, in addition, I believe it was GKMacca that touched the matter in the match thread as well, but how long has it been seen we've looked THIS good early on in the Season?

I mean we've played loads of medicore teams over the past many Seasons come late summertime, but never looked quite as classy and comfortable as we did last night.

That, in itself, has got to be a good omen of things to come.

I know we played well yesterday and it was encouraging but come on, put some ice in your hat. Gomel is just a very poor team. I remember us outplaying one of these pub teams under Hodgson too.

Do not raise expectations, you will only end up being disappointed.

Expectation has been raised. They were set rather low on beforehand mind so it's not like I think we'll now win the treble.

Yet.

Just watching it again now (a few too many glasses of wine last night has fogged my memory) - They look the best I've seen them in a long time. I know it's only Gomel but fuck me they moved the ball around beautifully. Suarez was immense. And those of you saying Shelvey had a poor game. Check his pass for Gerrards goal. I admit though he does look a little raw but he is a talent no doubt. Borini's little flick to set up Suarez was sublime. 2nd half about to start.

Put Steven Gerrard next to a world class attacking player and there is instant chemistry.

No need for this we need to play together for ten games to build up an understanding.

Gerrard + Owen, Gerrard + Torres, and now Gerrard + Suarez.

It is amazing how multiple "tactically astute" miss this simple issue.

The England attack should have been Gerrard + Rooney with everyone else supporting them.

You are not wrong there. Just check the interplay between Gerrard and Suarez on 61 minutes. Brilliant.
