Rafa's Subs ... again

Why did we have to wait so long for a change? We had a good 1st half and should have been up 2/3-0 but we were so stale in the 2nd half. We couldn't get anything going, and instead of making a change earlier in the half, he waited till it almost 70 minutes to bring Babel on.

Now I'm not saying Babel would have scored had he come on sooner, or made more of an impact, but Voronin was struggling and we needed a change ...

Oh well ...

Voronin should've been pulled at half-time. He was really awful tonight and I don't understand why he was kept on.

Ah well.

I had no problems with the subs tonight.

If i was being picky then i'd have liked a more defensive change to be made when we went 1 up.

When we were beating Manure, Rafa bought on Skrtel to close off the game.

Why didn't he do the same here when a win was critical for the progression in this tournament?

This could be a major major demoralizer for our squad - so close to a key win with a crocked Torres and no Gerrard, and we let it slip ...

We were winning and our defence then fucked up. Nothing to do with the subs.

We were lucky to score, and I don't understand why Aquilani wasn't brought on.

We were unlucky to concede, and I don't think subs would have made a massive difference.

I cant understand why Purple did not come on. All he is short of is match fitness, and you dont get that in training or sitting on the bench.

We were not lucky to score. Dont see how you can say that. Torres, Voronin, Lucas and Kuyt all had some very good chances.
Babel had two chances, and was perhaps lucky to score the way he did, but it was a deserved lead.
I dont think we can pin this particular result on Rafa, and I dont see much wrong with the subs.

Rafa will not make a sub before 60th minute unless he was forced by injury or a booking. That is what it is. No point moaning about it every time. He has not changed this habit before and i'm not sure he will change ever.

What i'm worried about is the number of late goals we have shipped in and also the number of injuries we are carrying. Are we feeling the weight of losing Paco (wasn't he the highly rated fitness coach that fell out with Rafa for being friendly with Mourinho?)

Because we were controlling the game, had the advantage in midfield, and Lucas and Madcherano were performing well. That's why.

performing well??

70 mins of passing sideways and backwards, we didnt open them up at all

he should have put Aquilani on, someone tell him he has 3 subs

We had 3 players capable of scoring on the pitch tonight (Yossi, Kuyt & Torres) and one of them is off form currently ... Mascherano & Lucas did play well, but they add little to nothing (well, Lucas had one great chance) in the attacking side of things ...

I agree. We done enough to win the game, you can't plan, sub or have a strategy in place to account for the defence bottling it and conceding a silly goal.

I agree with saint, shite defending, fuck all to do with subs although you could argue subs could have sealed the game had the been brought on sooner.

I wouldn't imagine he would come on for either of the names you mentioned. Voronin off was the ideal change for him, the lad needs minutes before he gets thrown in the deep end for 90 minutes. Surely he would have offered more than Pony in keeping the ball and stretching the game using Babels' pace?

We don't know mate. We've no idea how fit or unfit Aqui is, I'm sure if rafa felt he'd be the best option to come on and score us a goal he'd have brought him on though. I agree that at some point he's going to need games, but we were controlling things in the middle, and Babel's proved a useful sub in the past to come on and score.

The result didn't hinge on whether we did or didn't bring on Aquilani.

Agreed. I just worry that he might not get minutes until everything has gone. If he is in full training (as he allegedly has been for 3 weeks), then let him get some minutes. He is our 2nd most expensive signing ever, promises much, and we could do with the shot in the arm his appearance would give us. The longer we wait, the more we may have lost confidence-wise.

Yup, agreed too. I'd be surprised if we didn't see him get some action against Birmingham.

Mate, I don't think you're quite the gobshite some of your fans here do, but ffs..!

Torres, Kuyt, Lucas, Veronin and Babel twice had good chances to score - Not half chances (actually, the one that flew in was the toughest chance!), but good, solid chances.

Away, in the European Cup, we did more than enough to win. We didn't look like 1988 Liverpool, but we opened them up several times. It was our finishing and our defnding that f#$!ed us tonight, not our midfield.
