Liverpool manager Benitez 'guarantees' top four finish

Benitez is facing his most challenging time in five years at Anfield
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez says he "guarantees" that they will finish in the top four despite their poor form so far this season.

Having begun hoping to challenge for the title Liverpool lie seventh in the table, 13 points behind leaders Chelsea and out of the Champions League.

"I am sure we can do it because I know we are better than the team you are seeing on the pitch," said Benitez.

"I can guarantee we will finish in the top four."

On Sunday, Liverpool lost 2-1 at home to Arsenal, despite scoring first.

That result, their sixth league defeat of the season, left them five points adrift of the Champions League places. And it extended their run of poor results to only three wins in the last 15 games, their last home victory having come against champions Manchester United on 25 October.

Benitez is facing the most difficult period of his five years in charge at Anfield, but insists he will not compromise his principles to get out of an uncomfortable situation.

606: DEBATE
I don't think he was wise to say this, has he just heaped even more pressure on his threadbare squad, is it a big mistake or will it show the squad he means business?

"For five years I think we were doing well," he said. "So we have to keep going in the same way because the club is stronger now in everything: the squad, the value of the club is better than five years ago.

"Yes, it is a bad moment but I still think we can improve.

"I think it is very important for any manager, but especially here in England, to be strong.

"You have to show you have an idea, you have your own people that you can talk with and analyse things and say 'This is the way to do things' and we have to keep going.

"The main thing for me is to come here early in the morning, do my job, go home still working a little bit and try to be ready for the next day.

"That is the way to do things and that is an example for the players - and they are doing the same thing.

"Everything can be improved and if we make mistakes we keep going.

"There are still 22 games to play so we know we have to change our target. Now it is to get three points against Wigan and then start thinking about Portsmouth (at the weekend)."

There are no guarantees in football. We just have to stop with all the "we'll bounce back" talk (x 10), put our heads down and start winning games.

We need to lift our heads up mate, not put them down.

Heh.. yeah, on the pitch.

In the media, heads firmly down as I'm tired of hearing the same interviews being trotted out by a different member of the squad, each week, about how *this* will be the week that we'll see an amazing turnaround because they've been working hard in training, etc, etc.

the management and players need to shut the fuck up and just fucking get on with it. there is only so many times you can hear 'we'll bounce back' before it sounds like empty promises.

Ah, so we can improve.

Cheers Rafa.

*breathes sigh of relief*

I liked the tone of the press conference today.
It was upbeat and exactly what everyone needed to hear.
The fact remains that with the squad of players we have, we should be finishing in the top 4.
I also agree with Rafa that there is only a few minor changes to be made to the first team and we will start picking up wins.
We're close to having a first choice team available to us and our fixtures over the next couple of months are more than winable.

I think this is the right sort of statement.

It's also very ballsy, on the other hand sometimes when he's made these rare proclamations, he's done brilliantly, for instance the "until today" pre match Chelsea thing.

Yea if we keep our heads down we won't find it easy to talk to the media but our passing won't improve will it?

Lets face it, if Rafa doesn't get Top4 he will be out of a job - whatever Purslow has said recently.

So what has Rafa got to lose? He's accused of not motivating the players, well perhaps this very public declaration will help to buck the players up. Its certainly different from his usual non-committal comments. Desperate times can call for different measures.

Plus, he's right. The team we have should be better than its position based on it ability. I'm all for what he's said.

It might. Best to keep your head down looking over the ball as you strike it. More control that way.

Yea, more control over hitting the ball to the place your team mate used to be standing a few seconds before.

Yeah, shame he didn't come out and say 'We will win the league' at the beginning of the season.

I don't think it makes any difference what he says in press conferences tbh. As Lawro (yes, a twat, but right on this occasion) says, it's up to Rafa to restore the players' self-belief. We cannot go on being as mentally fragile as we have been recently.

We will finish 4th (or higher) i totally believe that.
If villa keep this up i doubt it..

What worries me about Villa is that they were strong last year so it isn't fluke/coincidence that they're doing well again. Yeah, they faded away last year but they didn't start playing in July this year for the fair play league, so I can't see that happening again.

I must say, I find Rafa's positivity and general tone to be quite uplifting. Good to see such assurances in my opinion.

And how will beating Wigan at home 'fuck the doubters' or prove anyone wrong?
Only winning our next 4 on the bounce will do that.

This sort of stuff strikes me as fucking wierd.

We need to do better. Stop putting arbitrary numbers on it. When we were doing better people said "we haven't beaten anyone good". Now we'd take anything. I'd be ecstatic with a win against Wigan, because it has been statistically unlikely for us to win any given game for many weeks now.

Stop looking at our next 10 matches and calculating points.

Just fucking stop. It's like counting the corn in a bowel movement.

Hey Glock, care to comment on the whole ripping off post after post after post from someone else?

It takes some gut really to go out and make *guarantees* like this baring our recent spell in mind.

I like the sheer boldness of it, hopefully it'll encourage our players to deliver the goods even further.

I think it only really serves to underline the fact that Rafa is really feeling the pressure right now.

In the past he's been rather reluctant to be drawn on our chances with regards to anything, however now with the support of the fans rapidly dwindling, he's trying to restore a bit of faith. It sounds a little desperate.
