Rafa Benitez warns Barcelona £50m would not buy Javier Mascherano

Jun 10 2009 by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

RAFAEL BENITEZ today warned Barcelona to drop their interest in Javier Mascherano because “even "£50m would not be enough to sign him.â€

Warning bells rang at Anfield today when the Argentine international's agent appeared to be paving the way for a bid from Barca.

Walter Tamer, Mascherano's representative, said: “It is an honour for Javier that a club like Barca pay such close attention to him.

“He would have a very easy job there.

"Sometimes we talk and joke that the only thing he has to do is run, rob the ball and pass it on to all the superstars in front of him.â€

Benitez was so concerned by the reports that he cut short a family holiday today to issue a clear hands-off warning to the Catalan club.

“Mascherano has no price,†he declared.

“Barcelona could not afford to match his value to Liverpool Football Club.

“We do no want to sell and Javier is very happy here.

“I have spoken to Javier two or three times this summer – the last time was only last week – and he was very happy, very positive.

“He gave me the private number of his agent, Walter Tamer, and again the conversation was very positive and was all about football.

“Walter told me that two clubs with big, big names were asking after Mascherano – and I told him to forget it, that Javier was happy in Liverpool and he was not for sale.

“So I was surprised to see the agent's comments today.

“He has a long contract and any club can forget about bidding for him. They can offer $40m or even $50m, we don’t want to sell.â€

The recent worrying financial report about the level of Liverpool's debts has encouraged clubs to consider bids for influential Reds stars like Mascherano.

But reports today suggest that Tom Hicks and George Gillett will be given the green light by Royal Bank of Scotland and Wachovia to refinance their £350m loan from next month's July 24 deadline.

The extension could reportedly cost up to £3.5m for the arrangement fee, with interest payments – approximately four per cent above the banking rate.

Gotta love Rafa.

The price does quote dollars though.

Either way, it's reassuring seeing Rafa take such a firm stance.

He'd bite their hand off if Barca offered 50 million quid or at least he should.

their hand, forearm, arm, and probably most of their torso.

Nice one Rafa. Can't believe he's on holiday though - shouldn't he be out there signing players? Fucking Rick Parry all over again...

the difference is rafa has his mobile on.

Fuck it, we're LFC and shouldn't be selling our best players regardless of price.

Welcome back David.
I agree the day we become a selling club will be the start of our demise.
I think that is why Benitez is digging his heals in over Xabi, it was alright to sell him on our terms last year for £15m, but we won't have little grease balls popping trying to take our players.

regards

I think if a player is desperate to leave and Rafa thinks it could affect his and our performances, then I think it's acceptable to sell, as long as they pay our valuation. But we certainly don't want to go down the route of selling our best players to raise funds as it contradicts the whole ethos of building title winning teams.

Ian rush was sold.. and arguably he was one of our best players during that era.. Kevin keegan is another example...

so anything is possible

To be fair I think he has Foureyes.
Not quite as strong though... Rafa has been quoted as saying that he would only sell Xabi on two conditions:-

1. Xabi asking for a move.
2. And someone offering £50m.

Still a very strong stance though and I am probably just splitting hairs here.

So, it appears G&H will be able to refinance the £350m loan with interest repayments at 4% above the banking rate. Am I correct in thinking that as the banking rate is much lower now than it was back in Jan 2008, the actual amount of interest we have to pay back is also less?

I wasn't having a pop at him, Sheiky, I just couldn't be arsed traipsing through 34 pages of the Xabi thread. I'm glad he has backed Xabi to the same degree. I'd be over the moon if we kept them both.

Obviously there's exceptions.

The Rush sale had been known about in January or even prior. The sale was used to finance Aldo, Barnes and Beardsley at a net cost of around £0.75M.

Not a bad piece of business

Both players fancied the cash and new challenge abroad, and we got big money that was used to strengthen already hugely succesful sides, taking us onto even bigger and better things. Slightly different scenario to now when we're still building towards that first title.

$50m or £50m?
Dont know where Dollars came from, its an English team on one side (£) and a Spanish side on the other (€).

The 50mln lark is just random high figure to say "f//k off"

Our squad last season proved how close we are to winning the league. We have little incentive to start the re-building process again if we lost Xabi or Mascher or both !

Barca have tabled a £51m bid, any takers?
How much would Essien cost?

Because he's the only player who'd be an improvement on Mascher at DM.
