Rafa set to become Real Madrid manager

I thought the collective view on fsg was that they'd get the stadium sorted and bloat us to limits commercially and then sell on. I. E, they won't be here in 3-4 years time?

Also, why wouldn't they want Benitez?

I'd have thought they'd have got on quite well as a combination

Ian Ayre doesn't like him and has painted an unflattering picture of Benitez for the owners. Purslow also wasn't particularly complimentary when FSG asked about him.

I don't know to what extent these rumours about relationships between our executives and Benitez are true but if they are true then it's an insight into how they seem to value the ability to get along over and above the ability to be ruthless. Pushing out a successful but awkward character and appointing an affable Uncle in Hodgson seems to show their thinking and it hasn't worked.

Benitez (awkward but trophies) goes, Hodgson in. Dalglish (awkward but trophy) goes, Rodgers in.

I'm sure they're in it for the money - which owners of top clubs aren't these days? - but I doubt they'll have achieved their aims in that short a timeframe.

I reckon he will do very well with them, unless he goes a bit mad.

He's stubborn enough to ignore the the board, fans and the likes of Ronaldo and do things his way.

He is, and I'd have a fiver on them to win the CL with him in charge, but he still won't be there long, especially not if he puts Ronaldo's nose out of joint.

Poor old Rafa. He can't help himself. I once had a colleague who was amazingly rude and blunt with those who worked beneath him (naturally, he's now in the House of Lords). Eventually his wife had a word, telling him he'd really got to be more tactful. So then he took to saying, 'If you don't mind my saying so...' and then he'd be just as blunt and rude as he ever was before. Rafa seems to be like that. Montse will probably send him off on his first day, saying 'Now don't forget: be nice to Ronaldo,' and Rafa will return at tea time, surprised that Ronaldo has handed in a transfer request.

Will the family follow him back to Madrid? They seemed pretty clear in the recent past that Merseyside's their home now.

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the reasons they've hired him is to gradually move Ronaldo from being the main man. He's still obscenely good, but he's not far off the point where the amount of money they'll have to pay him will keep going up and his ability will start going down.

I'd imagine Montse will spend a bit of time there now, seeing as she's got 'family' there as well, but as you say they do seem rooted to the Wirral.

He said he was leaving Napoli to be closer to his family.

Presumably they are in Madrid at this stage

Interesting theory. Makes sense.
