lucas has improved but will have to step up another level to keep his place because when aqualad is fit rafa will surely be tempted to throw him staight in, after all he cost 20m on him.

STRONGER

Lucas Leiva believes he has become stronger because of 'difficult moments' endured in his first two seasons at Liverpool.
The 22-year-old struggled to nail down a regular first-team place after arriving from Gremio in 2007 - but he is finally establishing himself as a Premier League star in 2009-10 following an impressive pre-season.

Brazil boss Dunga this week rewarded the midfielder with a place in his squad for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Javier Mascherano's Argentina.

On his change of fortunes, Lucas said: "Back in Brazil everything seemed to progress perfectly from when I was a kid.

"I played well, scored goals and won titles - it was easy. When I moved to Liverpool it was suddenly different and I've had some difficult moments. However, these experiences can help me. They have made me stronger.

"I realised I had to be stronger. I've done plenty of work in pre-season so I'm better able to cope with the physical side of the game here."

Glen Johnson might have hogged the headlines following a stunning display in the 4-0 victory over Stoke, but Rafa Benitez was equally as delighted with his Brazilian youngster's confident display.

Lucas added: "Rafa has told me to play further forward, especially against teams like Stoke. Against sides that defend a lot he said to me to play a little bit higher.

"When Javier can get the ball and I can get forward more often, it gives me the chance to attack as much as I can. Playing higher up is the key to beating teams who just come to Anfield to defend.

"Now, I think I'll be able to get forward more and believe I can have a good year and help us challenge for the title again.

"I feel stronger. I'm playing well and I'm enjoying it here. I hope that continues."

The one huge problem that everyone had with Lucas (even his defenders), is that he shrugged out of too many 50/50s, and was pushed off the ball regularly, often resulting in dangerous possession for the opposition. On evidence of preseason and the first couple of games, his physical conditioning work has had an almost miraculous effect. I think concern with his often too lateral, safe passing, is merited but not a huge problem. Lucas has got a good range of passing, and attempting more Hollywood passes will come with confidence, which he seems to be gaining. One potential boon of Alonso leaving is that Masher is clearly developing his passing game, and that could be a massive boost. Too often the way to stop Liverpool was to stop Alonso, who Masher invariably entrusted much of the passing to. If we have two ball playing CMs that should make us less predictable.

Lucas is by no means the finished product, but already this season and preseason there are signs to believe he is increasingly worth his place in his squad. Fingers crossed for the lad. Having the Anfield crowd off his back should allow him to attempt to vary his passing you'd think, if he's not frightened of bringing on the ire of the crowd with an ambitious pass that doesn't come off. Confidence should allow Lucas to fulfil whatever potential he has. How good he ends up, we can't tell yet, but I think it is already safe to say that Lucas Mk 2009 is a name that shouldn't inspire immediate groans when we see it on the team sheet.

Even better than that, yesterday we had 4 ball playing CMs. It's been noticeable in this new setup that both Benni and Gerrard are swapping positions with deeper players coming deep and playmaking. That type of fluid play will cause teams no end of problems.

With Xabi the drill was too easy. Kuyt and Riera would go wide, Gerrard would show and Torres would stay high. It was so predictable it was easy to snuff out. This new setup will challenge a lot of teams organizational abilities.

Now let's see if we can do the same when the ball is contested because it really wasn't yesterday.
it was so predictable that we nearly won the league with it and had gerrard and torres played more games last season we would have.

the new setup as it stands is far from proven.
But not good enough to win it eh.

Very true it's unproven. Less cover for the defense and doubts about retaining possession when the midfield is contested are valid. Time will tell.

Rafa calls Bren a cunt
Liverpool forum

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has condemned Lucas Leiva's critics after the midfielder earned a call-up to the Brazil squad.

Lucas showed promising form amid the Reds' poor pre-season campaign and continued his form into Liverpool's 4-0 drubbing of Stoke City in midweek.

Brazil manager Dunga has now called up the midfielder for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers against Argentina and Chile in a clear sign of Lucas' progress under Benitez.

Despite the progress, the 22-year-old was still made a scapegoat as Liverpool fell to Tottenham on the opening day of the season, criticism which Benitez is adamant was unfair.

"Lucas has a very good mentality. But for someone of his age to suffer such criticism from the experts on TV is wrong," Benitez claimed.

"He is so good but still he was criticised. I do not understand why they do not criticise other players, more senior players, when they do not play well.

"He is an easy target and maybe they are not brave enough to criticise the bigger players here."

"But he will have a big season. He was the best player in pre-season and at Spurs, when we did not play well, he was still one of the best alongside Glen Johnson and Pepe Reina.

Stoke
"Against Stoke he again showed his quality. He has a very good mentality. He can tackle, win headers and pass the ball. He will make mistakes like anyone, but he is and will be a very good player.

"I was really pleased for Lucas, in particular, after the win against Stoke and his performance. I have been really surprised at the amount of criticism he has had to cope with from the pundits, the so-called experts.

"Lucas is still a young player but he has experience. And after the display against Stoke everyone can see, even the so-called experts on TV pundit panels, can see he is a very good player.

"Hopefully they will now stop using him as a target. He is a very good lad, an excellent professional. I find it hard to understand that if you are an expert on TV, you cannot see these things."

Lucas is shit. There's no debate to be had. If you think he's good, you're a cunt and know fuck all.

Bye Y'All!

xxx

Bad news. Now both our central midfielders will be away on the orher side of the world, probably arriving back ten minutes before kickoff in our next match.

Lucas has been shit in the past but his form has shown promise in these 1st 2 games. I'm really that any Liverpool fan isn't giving him another chance... Even halfwits who say "cunt" ever other sentence.

It's just a shame that's not a complete sentence otherwise I'd sympathise.
