just to kick off discussion.
there are examples all over europe
manu - ronaldo
man city - tevez
arsenal - cesc
and we are no exception with alonso and Torres.
if you have obvious world class and they want out, would you (forget the club or cliches) would 'YOU' hold onto a world class player that wants out

no one seems interested in this thread, oh well, I'll answer my own question. imho when a player wants out, no matter how much quality he is and how much the loss will weaken you as a team I would get rid. if suarez said tomorrow he wanted out I would get rid. harmony in the squad is everything. I guess you can counter it is better to have a quality squad with issues then a happy mediocre squad.

I sometimes wish we'd fought harder to keep certain players, especially Owen and Macca, we fucked ourselves over, but it's clear in some instances that the player knows he's the one holding all the cards, Masher is the perfect example, he was a cunt for the way he went about demanding his move, but he gets a minor reprieve for his impeccable attitude when he did play.

Yes.

I'd keep him in a dungeon, or have I got the wrong end of this ?

you would have kept alonso against his will?

I have no doubt in my mind that had alonso stayed we would have made the CL. alonso would have been professional as it was a world cup year, so that is a pretty compelling arguement to kept wantaway players. it really is a difficult one.

Yes.

Maybe in a dungeon.

Is this a trap ?

If it's a want away who you know will still act professionally and give 100% when he plays, then yes keep him. If it's someone who will sulk and play like useless prick then get rid of him.

Having lots of experience of Mediterranean types (professionally and personally), I would say he is probably of the latter!

Depends on whether you can get a good price or not. If you kept them and they didn't play to their usual standard, then almost any price would do, if you were sure they would still perform then, depending on the length of their contract, I'd hold out for a good price.

In other words I'd make a decision based on the particular case.

it's a gamble, if we held onto aqua based on his preseason and he got injuried or his performance dropped, we'd be KICKING ourselves.

How much does he get paid? Would he be worth hanging on to in case he started performing again or is he too expensive?

Sell. Even if the player performs well on the pitch, there's no telling what kind of disruption he can cause, even without meaning to, in the dressing-room and around the club generally. Besides, the longer you keep him the more his price will go down, in step with the number of years left on his contract.

The only financial numbers that have mattered to this football club are the two deals that changed the ownership. I don't know why people still arse themselves in the detail of salaries for squad players etc, and then say that they'd rather we'd have spent our money on Aguero and Mata (when the reality is their wages would eclispe what we're paying our underwhelming British recruits)... But if we are looking to offload players simply because of the contracts that LFC agreed to, signed up for and were prepared to take the hike on, and that were on the balance sheet when the new bosses did their due diligence, at least concentrate on offloading the shite and not quality players like Aquaman.

I generally agree, but there are examples of players who wanted to leave being 'persuaded' to stay and having great seasons. Tevez the first time round, for example, or Rooney last season. Even Fabregas and Henry for a couple of seasons each at Arsenal. We didn't let Mascher leave when he first wanted to leave either. It's usually a temporary solution (although not always - see Stevie Gerrard), but that doesn't mean it's not a solution at all.
