Aquilani's a decent player. I've seen enough of him at Roma to say that hand on heart. I think he'll be a success here too - but possibly not to the level everyone was hoping for when Xabi left.

You're not alone, mate. There was nothing else to cling onto during the opening spell of the season, but hope can be a terrible thing because it places great expectation on those who maybe aren't ready for it yet. It's worth bearing in mind that Alonso at Madrid is looking half the player of last season, so things take time to gel, even for the very best.
That's not, though, an admission our squad is good enough. The very nature of Aquilani's game means he will thrive when surrounded by players of greater attacking quality, with greater movement and skill. A half injured Gerrard and Torres just isn't enough. We need investment.
