Except he was.
Gerrard, Hamman, Alonso are the the only three I would put above him, and all three of them were world class.
He was a brilliant brilliant DM.

Beyond those 3, who else have we had in the last 25 years? Redknapp, Lucas, whomever..? Hardly an illustrious list mate.

Besides, I always felt he was hugely overrated. I could see why fans took to him; he was passionate, ran around like a mentalist, jumped into tackles, slide about on his arse a lot, and looked feroccious n shit. But for me he gave away far too many free-kicks, he took himself out of the game too often by going to ground, and his passing was limited. He got lucky he was playing alongside Alonso and Gerrard.

Average workhorse midfielder. Gattuso really.

Funny how the description of Sissoko sounds a lot like Lucas. Only Sissoko was better at it.

That said, he was a limited footballer (stock euphemism for shit at footy). His vertical pass is probably one of my fave top 10 footballing moments.

LTW will disagree but IMO Gattuso was indeed little (if anything) more than a hod-carrier. Mascherano by contrast is the best ball-winner I've ever seen in a Liverpool shirt, and I saw Souey in his prime. At the purely defensive stuff we've never had better.
