Prepare to nostalgia (Momo Sissoko)

I never got why he was so admired for winning back the balls he lost - and then losing them all over again. Dogs in parks have shown more composure.

Very harsh on momo, his commitment and dedication to lfc was more than most, he also had sosome outstanding performances. Yes, not the greatest, but to compare him to a dog is wrong and disrespectful. Especially considering he put his eye and head in the line of duty. Was a momo fan and still am.

His footballing skills lagged well behind his fighting spirit, so macca's right to an extent, but in the right situation Momo was superb. The night we beat Barca in the Nou Camp (the one when Arbeloa wrapped Messi up tighter than a mouse's @rsehole) it was Momo who destroyed their midfield and gave us our platform. Similarly, while Stevie G got and still gets all the plaudits for the 2006 Cup Final, without Momo we'd never have stayed in touch long enough for Stevie to score those goals. At times Momo was playing W.Ham on his own while every other player, Stevie included, was out on his feet. IMHO he had as much of a claim as Stevie to MOTM that day.

I wasn't. It was like having to sit through Derek Smalls' 'Jazz Odyssey' in the middle of every 3 minute pop song. He got the ball, lost it, won it again, lost it again, and then the game went on. There was no point to it. People would say, 'Momo was busy today,' but doing what? He expended masses amounts of energy only to get back to square one. Yes, there was the odd game when he suddenly seemed to 'click,' but that only made his usual performances all the more maddening. I remember Rafa saying, 'Yes, he gives the ball away, but he is outstanding at winning it back,' and I always thought, 'Well, why not get someone who doesn't give the ball away and just passes it?' I know he's a cult hero but I'm afraid I didn't regret him leaving much at all.

we'll have to disagree on the odd game point + he complimented our midfield at the time and allowed the likes of gerrard and xabi to rule.

We need a new Momo but one who can pass.

Our midfield lacks any kind of physical presence. It's all compromises.

Good summary. That's exactly why I said in another thread that we should re-sign Masher. However unlikely it might seem, if he really is on his way from Barca we should at least try. I understand those who don't want him because of the way he left, but I don't agree with them - family pressures played a large part in that, and he was still MOTM in his last game against the Arse even after it had become clear that he was on his bike. If the family side of things is sorted I'd take Masher back in a New York minute.

Which is why its a bit strange that we didnt go after Etienne Capoue who moved from Toulouse to Spurs for 9 mill. Would have been a good signing for us.

Yes. Mascher really did have the technique and nous to do what dear old Momo aspired to do. I guess he's considered too old and expensive for the club now, and his wife would probably have a nervous breakdown being dragged back to the dark satanic port, but he'd certainly improve the team.

Momo was fucking awful. Absolute muck.
Mascherano was one of our best midfielders in the past 25 years. I would love him back.

Momo was superb until he fucked his eye. Different player after that.

The revisionism of momo is quite mad. He was like bambi on fucking ice 90% of the time, then came into form & had a couple of very good games against big sides in big games, then he gets injured & he's remembered as the black kaiser.

He was part of the official ”best midfield in the world" so can't have been that bad.

He was limited but awesome at what he could do ie. break up play and get round the pitch. Problem was he couldn't do much with the ball. Granted, that's a pretty serious limitation but he was effective when we didn't have the ball.

That said, my favourite memory of him was when he just booted the ball about 30 feet straight up in the air only to then have to contest it again as it dropped.

.

The Kop wanted to sing about Gerrard, Mascher and Alonso so they stuck him in out of politeness. That's all it was. The thing about Momo was his incompetence was strangely fascinating. It's like this gif: a kid who gets a rugby ball and kicks it wouldn't be interesting, but find a kid who lacks all basic co-ordination and you can't stop watching it. That's Momo.

lol - i was thinking the exact opposite - the revisionism is working against him. the way some go on about him now, its as though he was our stewart downing of the time. the guy was a bargain and got sold for more! plus - he was outstanding in what he was asked to do - give our glorious leader the space and time to be a god.

I would be curious to know how he performed on our man of the match yearly awards. anyone know?

I also seems to remember that we had a 9 game unbeaten streak or something towards the end of the 2006 season.
Momo was part of that midfield.

Except he was.
Gerrard, Hamman, Alonso are the the only three I would put above him, and all three of them were world class.
He was a brilliant brilliant DM.
