This list makes for sad reading - a reminder of how poor our strike force has been. This has to be our number one priority for next season.

Admittedly Sturridge's injuries prevented him being on this list. But we can't rely on one player getting into double figures.

Season has yet to finish but I can't see anyone apart from Raheem making it into double-figures. I wonder when was the last time we had no player score double-figures in the league?

Yeah but like weve had SO MANY goalscorers!!
Sturridge
Sterling
Coutinho
Henderson
Gerrard
Moreno
Markovic
Balotelli
Lovren
Skrtel
Obviously its nice to have a 20 a season striker on the list (and lets face it Sturridge would be up there) but more important that we have goals all over the pitch.

Sure it would be nice to have lots of goals from lots of source, but so far we have:

stevie 6
raheem 6
coutinho 4
lallana 4

this is not exactly goals all over the pitch. we need at least two players going for 10+ goals - reliable sources.

We've scored only 40 goals in the league. In 27 games. This season has definitely been paltry.

Our goal difference is 10 fewer than the teams above us. I share the view that it's more important to have goals throughout the team, which we have seen this season, but we will need Sturridge to feature near the top of the list next year if we're going to think about winning this league.

The reality is Ballotelli, Borini and Lambert can all be sold with little impact to the club. I'd rather have 2 strikers of Sturridges ability than the 4 we've got at present.

That is shocking and while it's good to share the goals around you really do need two strikers in double figures

I'd prefer to look at this in terms of contributions from departments rather than individuals. Obviously, there are one or two guys whom you'd expect more goals from (e.g. Sturridge and Sterling), but more importantly for me, each group has to chip in with their fair share. In a thread on this a few days back which didn't take off, I looked back on what we've done so far versus what my expectations were before the season started. I suppose this is a good thread to make another attempt at a discussion here:

Current vs Expectation (before season started)

Forwards:
-- Sturridge: 2 vs 20 (hey, I expected him to miss games, but not so many...)
-- Borini/Remy (okay Balotelli) + Lambert: 4 vs 15 (bloody hell, I feel like an idiot.. this is criminal from them)

Wide forwards/Attacking mids:
-- Sterling: 6 vs 10 (on track);
-- Coutinho + Lallana + Markovic + Ibe: 10 vs 12 (on track)

Centre mds: 10 vs 12 (on track)

Defenders: 4 vs 6 (on track)

TOTAL (excluding own goals): 36 vs 75 (woefully off track).
To think I had actually set a conservative target of 15 goals from the other 3 strikers combined.

With 11 games to go, the goal contribution from the rest has been as expected / targeted, though I think Sterling might miss by a goal or two by the end of the season. Coutinho's record has been 3 to 5 goals per season, and while Lallana did score 9 goals in his second season in the league with Southampton, he managed just 3 before that.

Next season, I expect the targets should shift a little for some individuals and departments, but not by too much. 10 goals from Sterling will still be a good expectation and not a soft target. The other attacking midfield players should be able to account for a few more goals, as Coutinho continues to improve his shooting, Lallana has a season at the club under his belt and with Markovic and Ibe bedded in.

What we gain from AM though, we'll lose from central midfield, mainly because Gerrard won't be scoring penalties and a couple of free kicks anymore - where those goals will flow to is anybody's guess as it's uncertain who will take our penalties. We showed in the shootouts this season that there are actually quite a few guys who can take tasty peno's at the club.

The major disappointment is obviously the 3-headed striker monster (Balotelli / Lambert / Borini). They should have at least combined for 9 to 10 goals by this stage, and that's based on a conservative target. They're not even at half that, which is ridiculously poor form. The abomination of this season cannot be allowed to repeat next season, and if we pull the right levers in the summer window, I'd expect (given Sturridge's injury record) a reasonable target to be: Sturridge + other = 30 goals, Origi + other = 5 goals.

Throw in a few own goals, and that's a 75- to 80-goal tally which will put you into the top two or three in most seasons. Then it's up to the defence to fulfill their side of the bargain and actually have a season where they don't ship more than 32+ goals.

I did the same as Studs', prior to the season kicking off (for all games not just the PL) : http://sixcrazyminutes.com/index.php?threads/goals-goals-glorious-goals.52249/

Goal Expectations / Targets vs 2013/14

Sturridge 21 (2013/14 : 25) To date 3 (injuries destroyed his season, I still expect a total of 8-10)
Sterling 15 (13) To date 10 (on target)
Remy 13 (14 for Newcastle in 27 games) Obviously substitute Balotelli : To date 4 (woefully inaccurate)
Gerrard 10 (15) To date 10 (he will probably surpass the target and but for injury may have matched last season's total)
Lallana 8 (10 for Southampton in 39 games) To date 5 (on target)
Lambert 7 (14 for Southampton in 38 games) To date 3 (won't make the target but will probably have 5)
Coutinho 8 (5) To date 5 (on target)
Henderson 7 (6) To date 4 (may match last season's tally)
A.N.Other 5 (TBC) I was expecting another midfielder to be signed so an empty space.
Markovic 3 (1 for Benfica in 13 games) To date 3 (may surpass target by 1 or 2)
Skrtel 3 (7) To date 1 (surprisingly off target)
Sakho 3 (1) To date 0 (I expected some headed goals from corners etc. no way he will make the target now, if he scores at all)
Can 2 (4 for Leverkusen in 39 games) To date 1 (on target)
Lovren 2 (2 for Southampton in 31 games) To date 1 (on target)
Allen 1 (2) To date 0 (he only needs 1 FFS)
Johnson 1 (0) To date 1 (met target)
Enrique 1 (0) To date 0 (hardly played)

Also
Moreno To Date 2 (a new signing after I'd compiled this list)
Rossiter To Date 1
Borini To Date 1
I'd set no targets for Kolo, Manquillo, Ibe, Flanno, Borini or Lucas.

Other Scorers in 2013/14
Suarez 31
Aspas 5
Agger 2
Moses 2
Kelly 1
Cissokho 1
Alberto 1

Most players are close to the targets I'd expected them to meet, with the obvious exception of Balotelli and the failure of our defence to help out from corners and set pieces (only goals 4 from the whole defence, in all competitions, this season against 12 the last). Though to be so far down (40, maybe likely to hit 50-55, vs 101 last season) is a huge blow and just goes to highlight how we could have made a title challenge had Sturridge not been injured and we started the season with 3-4-3 instead of staggering from pillar to post with different formations until 2015.

I'd also expected our defence to concede far fewer goals than in 2013/14 as I felt Rodgers would prioritise this to help compensate for the obviously fewer goals we were going to score after the loss of Suarez, that defensive record stands at 49 (30 in the PL) vs 55 (50 in the PL) for the whole of last season.

I thought we could make an 10-12 goal improvement in our defensive record in the PL, that is still on target by season's end.
