Pre-season already!

I hope it continues into the season for Doak this year, same promise last year but didn’t see much of him during the season. Surely him coming on for Mo to play the last 15 against a tiring fullback sounds dangerous to Klopp

Unless he goes on loan to a top championship side (even for 6 months) it’s the only way he’ll progress.

yea I’d go for that if we aren’t going to play him, only thing is he may be a little on the young side for loaning out yet. Looks like he could handle it though imo

So next week the refs will be adding on 8-10 minutes stoppage time, and we're going into that game without a single outfield player having completed 90 minutes in pre-season.
That bothers me, a lot.

If we go out the cups early, and he isn't getting minutes in the league then we can still loan him out can't we? The loan market runs until when?

I’ve just read a load of managers/players whinging about this.

I’ve got a solution. Don’t time waste.

I think the problem is that adding time doesn't really alter one of the benefits of time wasting, and it incompletely addresses the other one.

Time wasting is primarily done now to fuck up the other team's tempo and negate their superior energy levels. Adding time doesn't alter this at all. The other reason is to make there be less time with the ball in play against a team that is better at actually playing the game than you are at NOT playing it. Given that the ball in play stats are down, this isn't being addressed either. If it were, then games would have like 16 mins of added time.

It's like making a marathon longer because someone is using a bicycle part of the time. You don't keep making it longer and say that punishes the sometime bicycle user, you punish the people the minute they start using a bicycle, so they stop doing it. Red cards. Use the fuckers.

Phoney war is over.

Scoring goals, unlike last season, isn’t likely to be a problem on the evidence of this preseason. It’s keeping them out which we need to worry about.

I don't have an issue with the time added on, I have an issue that we haven't prepared for dealing with it. Or the previous 20 minutes for that matter.

I’ve given this a little look. We’ve never really given anyone 90 minutes apart from the Charity Shield. Whenever we play the final preseason game the majority play fewer than 70 minutes. It’s something we’ve always done.

They also do it because the playing time is reduced which reduces the time the opposition has to score. I fully agree they should be booking time wasters, red carding them if necessary, but they take the safety first approach. Someone rolling round in agony, let’s get the medics on. We can see the replays they’ve not been touched and the refs fall for it. So add on the time.

In summary:

Back 3 - same issue as last season, Konate still has way too much ground to cover at RCB while Robbo plays more like a LB and Trent drifts to the middle. I can’t believe Klopp doesn’t see it, but so far I didn’t see any attempts at a solution. We’ll ship goals if this is not fixed.

MacAllister - even if/when Lavia comes, he might be our best option at the #6 position. Getting stuck in the tackle, positioning himself well and still being a factor creatively. His best game of the pre-season.

Trent - looks weirdly short of confidence; we didn’t see many of his patented “guided missile” passes and seems unsure of his position. Needs to use MacAllister next to him as an “anchor” to feel the freedom once again.

Szoboszlai - worked hard, but not too impressed with his attacking contribution, sloppy at times. Needs to learn never to head the ball into danger area.

Gakpo - a bit below par in the LCM role. The game was too chaotic for him to string many moves together.

Diaz - ran into blind alleys all throughout the first 45. Nice Zlatan-like goal off a corner in the 2nd visibly upped his confidence. Still you have to say he is probably more effective when the game becomes stretched, so I’m now changing my mind and leaning towards Jota starting at LW on Sunday.

Salah - took the gift of a goal, created another, remained calm and classy throughout.

Jota - nice finish for the 2nd, but by and large things didn’t work out for him as a lone striker for some reason. Gakpo as false 9 is still our best attacking option.

Subs:
Everyone has been lively and we had a lot more control after the substitutions. Nunez unfortunately looks well short on confidence again - I would be surprised to see him start vs Chelsea at this point. And Doak is a baller.

So in summary, all the problems we had last season are still going to be problems this season. We just have a couple new shiny new toys to distract us.

Not sure I quite agree with that, but I am a bit concerned about the Konate-Trent-Robbo situation. I would try Gomez at LCB personally.

Our only saving grace really is our forwards bailing us out, let's be honest. I've never seen a team so imbalanced in all my existence.

The line up v Chelsea will be the team that started today, maybe Jones comes in for Diaz/Jota......that's scary.

Already going to be playing catch up this early because we couldn't be bothered to prepare ourselves adequately in advance, not to knock the players we have bought but none of them provide defensive structure to that midfield which even Stevie Wonder could've seen was the first needed to walk through the gates at Kirkby.

Sorry Klopp but you'll be taking some of the blame this time as you've been given enough leeway.
