That was better from Origi, but a typical lack of composure, although in his defence, he isn't a naturally gifted finisher
Just saw Lucas flying in then I thought that was a guaranteed foul!
I said before that there's no competitive spirit at the lower levels, and it was suggested that this can be instilled when they come up to Melwood at 17/18, but it's gone at that stage, you can't really coach it. Too many kids just swan through games ticking technical boxes instead of trying to win the game. It shows on such nights like these. They're not bad lads, they're not untalented, but they just don't have that grit and that drive.
The only sort of "flying in" from Lucas that I want to hear, is the one that finishes with "to Milan airport to seal his permanent move".

Yep, I'd certainly play him again in cup games against third division teams.
Decent enough performance unless you expected an either/or performance. Plymouth played perfectly pragmatically in the first game, which was like watching paint dry but won them some cash, but you'd have to be thick to think understanding that intention also obliged you to applaud them on football terms. I'm just glad we're through. The thing that depresses me a bit is I'm not sure many kids learnt much, apart from not really being as good as is needed. These are games that need to be seized, and there were some limp hands out there.

Yeah He's shit, and it may have been a team three leagues below us, but credit where it is due, he was one of our best players and deserves the plaudits
Whose performance tonight would you say characterizes that lack of drive?
For me it was only really Ejaria who looked pretty subdued and Woodburn who struggled to really make an impact despite continually impressing (at least me) with his impeccable first touch.
Ojo and Wilson did their best to force the issue when they came on, TAA is ready as you say and Stewart is generally pretty combative if a bit inconsistent in his passing.
The only "kids" who impressed me today were TAA and to a lesser extent Woodburn.
Ojo was also good, but he had the advantage of playing against opponents with 80 mins of football in them.
None of them are ready to threaten anyone in the first team though, which isn't exactly a surprise, but there's a lot of potential.
My ratings:
Karius - 6: kept a clean sheet and made a great save, but was still very erratic.
TAA 7: the kid has balls.
Lucas 8: MOM
Gomez 6: needs more football
Moreno 7: I actually think he was alright. Got us a pen too.
Stewart 5: Sloppy
Coutinho 7: showed his class. Didn't get enough help.
Ejaria 6: Decent passing but what did he really do?
Origi 5: Missed pen, missed chance, he was just missing
Sturridge 5: just not a team player
Woodburn 6.5: Did OK despite not playing in his best position. He's got a bright future ahead of him.
I think he suffered a bit from playing with two selfish players alongside him.

Yeah, that was the best spell of the tie for me. After Coutinho and Sturridge got subbed, the U23 boys seemed to relax a bit and started stringing some neat moves together. That's the trouble with playing first-team players and kids together – at times kids think they must "give the ball to Phil" (or Stevie) and don't really play their natural game.
