Hello, well another season bites the dust and we are celebrating finishing 4th.

The old guard will be seething about this and it does feel wrong but that is the current reality I'm afraid. Money talks and Champions League football attracts the better players.

Points to make about this year's award :

1. I only counted votes from the survey site. The numbers were fewer than previous years. I assume that some of you either couldn't access the survey on your phones or couldn't be bothered with it. I would ask that you consider using it next season, the more people who vote, the more representative the voting.

2. Phil is a worthy winner. Apart from his injury period, he picked up points on a consistent basis. We need to keep hold of him long term, meaning we need to make CL football a habit.

3. Mignolet has had a very good season, 11 clean sheets, more at the end of the season. He has definitely looked more solid this year and it probably means that we will stick with him next year.

4. New players did well, Gini, Emre and Firmino. For me, the player that stood out (apart from Coutinho) was Sadio Mane. Next season will be exciting as long as we can keep him fit.

5. Sturridge looked great when he came back from his injury. This needs to be normal and his niggles cannot continue.

6. Best defenders were Milner and Matip. Hopefully Lovren can step up and form a proper partnership next season with Joel. We need to reinforce too.

7. Lallana grew into the season and he will be better next year as his confidence improves. This guy is a future captain. Hendo is well placed in 11th even though he missed a lot of games, but his injury may threaten his future career. Let's hope not.

Rodgers has a lot to answer for where that's concerned IMO. Before Clyne came to us, he was at least as good going forward as he was defensively. He had the misfortune to be a Liverpool player when Rodgers' régime began to go off the rails and Rodgers told everybody to play ultra-conservatively to try and cover up. Clyne lost his way at that point and hasn't managed to rediscover his A game yet.

Last season was an abomination with that whopper winning it, but Phil winning it over Mane is fair due to us losing him for a month for the mickey mouse cup, and then his injury. I think if we'd had him all season he'd have probably mopped up considering what we saw of him when he was about.

You may be right as he picks the safe option far too often and rarely takes players on even when it's one on one which with his pace is a waste. Having said that when he is in a position to cross it's usually an awful attempt that hits the first defender.

Then I guess you couldn't access the voting on your phone or you didn't bother.... Or is it as simple that Firmino was just our second best player (as the fans saw it) over the season.

I think it's undeniable that our 2 best players this season were Mane and Coutinho (in any order) and Firmino would have been deservedly been in 3rd place if Mane didn't miss so many games. That's already a good accomplishment and a step forward compared to last season, when Firmino was often described as "Jekyll and Hyde" of a player. I'm sure it grates Brendan somewhat to see Firmino this high up the table, whether it's 2nd or 3rd.
