Excellent Uruguayan left-back who'll surely make the team of the tournament at the Copa America. Quite a few links to us in various websites with a reported 20m euro release clause (some have Suarez tipping off Kenny about his availability). Really good going forward, can whip lovely crosses in at pace - and can defend.

Anyways, Porto have just signed a 10m left-back (Santo or something) paving the way for Perreira to leave.

Get in there Comolli.

Twitter time!...

This from ESPN Journo Rafael Almieda based in Portugal, Liverpool muito próximo de anunciar Álvaro Pereira, que fez ótima Copa América pelo Uruguai. Excelente reforço para os Reds

Liverpool very close to announcing Alvaro Pereira, who had a great Copa America Uruguay. Excellent reinforcement for the Reds

Alvaro Pereira of Porto has told Portuguese media that he's interested in coming to Liverpool but will report back to Porto + go from there

hope its true, ive stopped getting excited about rumours now, the amount of players we've been linked with this summer is bigger than the amount of people that have slapped ulrika johnson about for bein a mouthy slag

He's a very good defender but you just never know with South Americans and the EPL style of play.

For the last 5-8 years I've rated Diego Lugano as one of the best centre backs in the world and that's with him playing mostly for South American clubs and with Fenerbahce in Turkey.

Perreira

Andrew Heaton, who claims he is not an ITK, says he has heard that without selling any players we do not have enough cash to buy this lad.

I've never seen him play before.

Likewise.

I think its more in the line of, we have to trim the wage bill before signing anyone. Its bloated enough already.
The money is probably there, but we have only let the Konch go far. We have a massive squad with massive wages.

I would rather buy Gary Cahill if we're going to spend that money on a defender.

This. Very much this.

Would 20 million buy us Leighton Baines if he handed in a transfer request?
[/quote]

You'd like to think so!

Why do people think this lad would be such an exceptional signing? He looked pretty ordinary in the few games I watched.

He, along with Falcao and Moutinho were Portos best players in a pretty impressive season.
Played left back for Porto and left midfield for Uruguay.

Very good player, but the mooted fee is a bit to much imho.

It's odd Lugano never got a 'big' move. I remember seeing him first against us in the World Club Championship.

Yup, he played for Sao Paulo 8)

I would loved to have seen Lugano play more alongside Paolo Montero in defence for Uruguay.... unfortunately, when Lugano began to establish himself, Montero was coming to the end of his career.

For me, that centre back partnership would have been just as good as Nesta & Cannavaro.

2 top class defenders.

Sky Sports News is reporting that Chelsea have now made an official bid for Porto's Alvaro Pereira. He can play at left back or left midfield, and you'd have to assume his primary role would be the latter at Chelsea.
