Pace - the search for the next Salah - Mane

One of the most painful things about Kyiv was seeing how one dimensional we became when Salah went off.

The only real pace we had to hurt Madrid was Mane.

Granted Mane put in an incredible shift to try and win the game on his own but a serious limitation in our squad was exposed.

With that in mind, who are the candidates to bolster our front 3 attacking options.

Keita and Fabhino are both CM.

Fekir doesn't look to be an out and out pacey forward.

GK and CB aside we need options for a front 3.

Lallana is toast, Solanke isn't ready and Woodburn and Wilson untried.

Could we bid for Bale? Is there another Salah out there waiting to slot into Klopps plan?

We will be different proposition next season with our new signings in midfield; It will help relieve the pressure off the front 3.

We need a new striker, and he needs to be fast. You're right about the final, I made the same point in my excellent ratings post; as soon as Salah went, nothing was happening. It's incredible how much of an outlet he is, and how dreadful we looked when Lallana and Firmino were just ambling around at 3 mph.

But then pace has always been vital

It was the first time I felt we really missed Coutinho. With no Salah and no Ox as an outlet our only option was Mane.

So many times in tight spots Coutinho would receive the ball spin away from trouble, carry the ball forward and bring others into play or bang one in from 25 yards.

We need more options up top badly if we want to win shit

Well... yes pace is important, but as Firmino has proven time and time and time again, it’s not essential.

We’ve had plenty of pacy players - Cisse, Gonzalez, Ibe, Origi, Moreno, Brad Smith - actually Firmino is the 5th fastest in the Liverpool squad just behind Salah.

Game intelligence and understanding is more important.

Our shape changed after Salah went off - we weren’t creating the space and pulling the RM out of position - that was the problem.

Lallana just isn’t good at playing in a wide role - but it’s not just about his pace or lack of.

What we need are a few more intelligent players that can excel in forward wide roles for us.

Games changing - “wingers” used to sit out wide and wait for the ball - didn’t Gerrard say he hated playing wide because he got bored not getting involved enough.

The change in football of late, particularly in Klopp’s system, is emphasising the wide attacking abilities of the overlapping full backs.

The wide players in the front three generally tuck into the space between the CB’s & FB’s, to cause uncertainty and create space by dragging players out of position.

We effectively went to two up front - and Firmino struggled - because Lallana wasn’t making the runs Salah makes - allowing the RM Defenders more control and in that moment the RM midfielders got a grip of the game that had eluded them so far.

That might not sit well with someone’s long held (wrong) belief that the “flabby melt” shouldn’t play upfront for Liverpool.

Besides - pace is less effective against teams that sit deep with 2 banks of 4.

Firmino only proved we could have played Danny Ings up top in the final for all the effect he had on the game.

The majority of his goals have been tap ins anyways.

When we needed something up top Mane was the only one to provide anything.

Firmino has shown how effective he is when he has plenty of pace around him, to give him space and create chances. And he's also shown how ineffective he is when that sort of player isn't there, he hardly scores anything.

Agreed.

We might as well have hooked him once Salah went off

I was talking about CBG's post, Firmino was indeed abysmal, as was Lallana. Because they're both too slow

No they weren’t.

I’d give you more credit for saying Lallana was abysmal because he was shit - which would at least have an argumentative base.

Are we a slow team?

Love to know who you think are our slow players?

Want he just highlighting those 2 as being slow?

If you’re talking about Manwithnoname

No.... that’s not what he was highlighting.

Firmino isn’t slow - there’s only 2 players in the team that played in the CL Final clocked as faster - and one of them went off injured.

Read his posts - his argument is effectively that Firmino is good when he’s given lots of space but really he’s slow and the only reason he scores is because of Salah & Mane.

Truth is - they’re both marginally faster - the other top five speedsters are Gomez & Moreno - Origi is the fastest in our books.

So not intelligence, technical ability, work rate - all things not mentioned by Manwithnoname - just pace... that’s it... nothing else

Insightful.

Almost as if he’s desperate for an opportunity to tell everyone he’s always been right about the shite flabby melt.
