Overated

I was thinking today about players in the game who are highly overated. Players out there who recieve much more praise than they deserve, even if they are world class.

Nominations for me are John Terry, Van Persie and Jame Carragher

I don't want to say ibrahimovic because i don't watch italian football so often, but i think he is.

I don't think Van Persie is overrated at all.

If anything underrated, he's a phenomenal footballer.

Cech and Silva.

I wouldn't say any of those are overrated. Maybe Van Persie at a push.

Both Terry and Carragher are probably not technically the best footballers in the country. However, the importance of Terry to Chelsea and Carra to us is huge, even if the roles do play to their strengths and don't expose their weaknesses.

For me an overrated player is one who people rave about but actually does little. Ryan Babel is overrated by many for example

My vote for them being overated is purely on a footballing stand point, there value to the club is no doubt huge, but people on this forum and liverpool fans in general praise Carragher as the best defender there is, frankly he's not, same with Terry, Man City were offering god knows how much for him, he's really not worth it, not even mentioning what Andy Gray and Sky Sports do to him.

My vote for Van Persie is probably slightly bias, i'm a southern so i often have people tell me about how he's in the same league as Torres, which he isn't.

Good shout on Cech, i'm annoyed i missed him, the Cech hype is retarded and it's only just starting to subside, i'd say similar for Van Der Sar too, but he deserves credit more than Cech. I'm a huge fan of David Silva, but it would be fair to say he's slightly overated.

I don't think Babel himself is overated as much as his "potential" is, i don't think he'll ever be the world beater people think he'll be.

Robin Van Persie is one of my favourite players in the world.
Did you not see his goal against us last year? Top, top quality goal.

Van Persie is not overrated - he's just too injured!!!

His technical ability is fucking superb.

Top player when he is on the pitch.

I don't think Ryan Babel is overrated - there's a difference between keeping faith in a player and highly rating him. Nor Van Persie, when fit he's hugely talented striker.

Players which are overrated:

Van de Sar
Cech
Walcott
Gallas
Terry

The "Times" Saturday football mag runs a survey at the end of each season to see who's been the Premier League's MVP. They use all sorts of stats to work it out, including comparisons between a team's performance with a particular player and without them. Cech topped the list last season. I agree he's not quite as good as he once was, but he still gets far too much stick on here.

Terry's playing ability has been overhyped for yonks (the guy has no pace, and it shows especially when he plays for England). What he IS though is a brave leader and organiser. It's that as much as what he himself produces which gives him his value IMO.

Maybe thats it, I still think it's wrong when people talk about him being in the same league as Torres, he's not.

I don't think even blinkered gooners would say he's on the level of Torres.
I think he is one of the few capable of playing to a similar level, Doc.

Oh i know many who do, regularly. Sky Sports often implies that he's somewhere close too. Point is, for someone who's injured maybe 30-40% of the time, only occasionally shows flashes of brilliance(and they really are brilliance) he gets hyped alot more than he deserves. Even when he has played, i've watched many games(the majority) where he's been next to invisible.

Im very suprised someone hasnt come on yet and say Wayne Rooney is overated.

Because he's not probably.

He could well be if he could stay fully fit for some time, unfortunately for him that's never the case.

edit: Thanks for reminding me, I wanted to mention Sergio Ramos as well but forgot about it while learning to embed, heh.

Van der Sar
Ferdinand
Ashley Cole
Sergio Fucking Ramos
Ibrahimovic
Rio Ferdinand is not overated, he's the best defender in the league.

This fucking goal, it's incredible, amazing technique, skill, truly world class. But the Van Persie bandwagon is still riding this goal into the fucking ground as proof of him being "better than Torres" years after it happened.

I have never heard it suggested. And if that day comes, I'll laugh contemptuously in the person's face, flecking them with greasy wads of saliva in the process.

That volley against Charlton is one of the best goals ever in the league.
He had a good season last year, not too many injuries.
Arsenal will be relying on him for goals now that Adebayor has been shipped out.

No-one has ever said that Van Persie is better than Torres, not even Arse fans.
No actually they have otherwise i wouldn't have said it, I live 25miles from Ashburton, all i see are Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham fans, the hype i hear about Modric, Carlton Cole and especially Van Persie is flabergasting (i've always wanted to use that word)

Carlton Cole. Hype?

a-hahahahahahahahahaha

I'm pretty sure Ribery's overrated too

He plays in the German league, ffs. How many people watch that? Nobody, but everybody thinks he's world-class.

Good call, 70Million? Pfft. Still we better warm to him, my sources say he'll be signing friday.

I wouldn't use a players supposed value in this particular transfer window.
Ribery is one of the best attacking wingers in the game.

Can play on either wing too, as well as down the middle if needed, and is now (wasn't always) a stable character who I'd back to adapt well over here. £70 mill. IS steep for him but, as you suggest, the current market is severely distorted.

Actually just thought of the player this thread was created for...

John arne Riise.
Loads of Riise fans on here.
I like him for the memories he gave me but by the end I was happy he left the club.
