Because they played about 100 games en-route to the Europa Cup final

They finished 6th the season before.

Which they lost.

I seem to recall Blackburn came 6th under Woy one year. The following year he got scaked with them at rock bottom.

He's not a very good manager.

Both represent over-achievement for Fulham

And yeah, I wish there was a better manager taking over, but we're not in a privileged position so what can you do but embrace it?

It's got to be better than last season. That's what I'm clinging onto.

It has to be. It can't get much worse.

I really don't get this.

Do people *actually* believe that any manager would not complain when their best players are sold and given no money to replace them?

It does when you're desperately looking for reasons to disapprove of someone.

There's been a lot of that going on in the last two weeks.

That's not what that sentence says. It says he will get money.

I don't necessarily disapprove of Hodgson getting the job.

Well we need a new left back anyway as Insua is all we have, which is a terrible state of affairs to be in.

If someone is silly enough to pay any kind of fee for Insua then we should sell and try to get someone decent and hopefully get someone cheap/free or promote a reserve as back up.
We did that with Insua and he was head and shoulders above the other reserves when he came up.

I think we'd need to get a first teamer and a backup if he's sold.
Unless we get another CB and use Agger as cover for LB. KHL is always on about Kjaer (sp?), although I didn't see much at this world cup to convince me.
Kjaer is one of the most obvious transfers this club will ever face.

Not only is he constantly proposing to Liverpool FC in the medias even though it seems every other big English club are hot on his trails but he's also one of the biggest defensive talents in the world of football. And he'll even come rather cheap-ish because of a clause in his current contract with Palermo.

He didn't have the best of World Cups admittedly and only played two games due to two yellows he did however - according to CNN I reckon it was - hit the pass of the tournament in his second game (leading to Denmarks equalizer against Cameroun).

I know he's first and foremost their to defend and he's very good at that mind you - especially winning physical duels and headers - but he's also a great footballer.

It's a no-brainer really.

Hasn't Kelly covered there? I'd like to see him become cover for Johnson though next season.
Almost forgot about Kelly. One of few bright spots from last Season.

He's really impressed so far and with a bit of luck and determination he could become a real top player for Liverpool. Hopefully we'll see a lot of him this coming Season.

CB isn't a priority position, no matter how much you'd like to believe it were so.

LB, LW and a striker all come first.

Well, if we can't find a quality LB and Kjaer really is all that, we could do worse that to buy him and play Agger at LB.
He did quite well when he played there and I remember him saying a while back that he enjoys the position

I tend to disagree although those areas mentioned are equally important.

We've completely lacked a powerhouse defender in the Sami-mould whom will win headers and dominate the area on setpieces. We don't have that player in the squad these days and although Ayala could be the one he's still rather unproven. Carra, Agger nor Skrtel are dominant enough in that area and it was costful throughout last Season.

He did quite well at LB but it's not his preferred position so I wouldn't make it permanent. We need him in central.

*sigh*

Apparently Palermo has now accepted an offer from Spurs so unless we're moving quickly this window of opportunity will soon be shut.

All true, but they are flaws which will have to be improved with our current players.

The fact is we don't have one decent LB, we don't have one back-up striker, we won't have our world-class DM for much longer and both LW's need replacing.

There's only so much you can do in one summer, especially with a budget as restricted as ours.

I doubt there'll be too much transfer activity either way given that with the WC not ending until July 11 there'll only be five minutes for the new Manager to run the rule over his players, find replacements etc etc before we begin.

Spurs deny £28.4m bid for Palermo pair
By Soccernet staff

June 29, 2010

Tottenham have insisted they have not made a bid for Palermo players Simon Kjaer and Edinson Cavani after the Serie A club claimed to have accepted a £28.4 million offer.

"Palermo's claims are inaccurate. We have not bid for these players,'' said a spokesman for Tottenham.

Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini had said the players were heading to White Hart Lane after Spurs met their asking price, but that now appears wide of the mark.

Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been tracking the two players all summer and declared his interest to Palermo earlier this month, leading Zamparini to declare they would only be allowed to leave for a combined fee of £28.4 million (€35 million).

Werder Bremen were thought to be leading the race to sign Kjaer, while Cavani had already spoken of his desire to lead the line for Inter Milan.

"Tottenham have bid €35million, an offer we cannot refuse, seeing as the two players have both said they want to leave," Zamparini told Sky Italia television. "We will reinvest the money for these players. The midfield is my biggest concern, whereas in defence and attack we are fairly covered."

Kjaer's representative Mikkel Beck has indicated the centre-back would be open to a move, should anything "concrete'' materialise.

"The situation has not changed since the summer began,'' Beck told Sport.co.uk. "He has a contract with Palermo for another three years, but he has been put in contact with so many big clubs in the last year. It is great that there is interest from these clubs, but I am afraid that nothing concrete has come from any of the interest as of yet.

"At the moment we stay put, and Simon is very patient. He knows what he has at Palermo, they are a top Italian team and are playing in the European Cup next year, so he knows what he has. But on the other hand he has admitted that if any concrete offers come out of the current interest then he would seriously consider leaving Palermo this summer.''

Palermo have also now denied claims of a bid. "As of today, Tottenham have not made any official offer to Palermo," director of sport Walter Sabatini told Reterete24. "There are rumours coming out of England, but there is nothing concrete."

Tottenham are expected to finalise a deal for Joe Cole, whose contract with Chelsea expires on Wednesday, now he has returned to England following a disappointing World Cup campaign in South Africa.
