Anyone else concerned?
Flanno about to be loaned, Smith sold, Gomez crocked again, Sakho under a cloud (at least with the management team). First choice Clyne, Louvren, Matip, and Moreno with Randall, Ilori and Klavan as back up. Looks pretty thin to me.
With Mignolet behind them and no screening midfielder, I really fear we'll continue to concede goals like we did last season. Milner playing left back regularly is madness.

GK : Karius will be back soon enough (missing 4-5 matches) and with Mignolet, Manninger and Shamel as back up that's more than enough.

CBs : Gomez will be back soon (4 weeks ?), Sakho issue is a non-issue and he will be back soon too. Matip, Lovren, Gomez, Sakho and Klavan is plenty if we avoid an injury crisis akin to that we have now (luckily it's pre-season).

RBs : Clyne, and Randall is a little thin but I guess there is also Trent-Alexander who showed well in pre-season. It's good enough if we avoid injuries.

LBs : the big issue. The line-up of Moreno, Milner, Sakho and Ragnar does not have one, for me, 1st team starter in it. Surely, SURELY, Klopp will buy a starter (not before the Arsenal game though).

A lot riding on us avoiding injuries. Which no team ever does. Add the fact that refs hand out cards like fucking Smarties theses days and you have bans to contend with too. I'd like to see us buy a reliable full back who can cover in the middle too.
I'd also like us not to loan out Flanno. He should easily be looking at covering both FB areas.

Keeping hold of FLanno makes sense and I'm surprised he's been loaned out (though he's not gone yet has he). Wisdom is still here too I believe ?

Playing just once a week should see our injury record improve dramatically and give time for niggles, that would have kept a player out of a midweek match, recover in time for the following weekend..

I'm surprised that Flanno is being loaned out as well. Even if he's not the best of defenders, surely his ability to injure the opposition without picking up any bookings is invaluable?

I think we'll be fine if we sign another left back. And I'm pretty confident we'll do that.

Yet the possibility remains that we'll start the season with Lucas and Milner at the back.

Pretty shocking we get to a week before the season starts and we still do not have a LB.

Reminds me of the summer we sold Luis and then ended up with Mario.

Karius, Matip and Ragnar will have to look rather amazing from the off, if I am supposed not to be concerned about our defense.

Easily our most fragile area.

2 of our centre backs are new to the League. The other 2 are certified dodgy. So the 2 new ones better be good or we're fucked.
Our left back is shit. Not sure what our back-up option is.
Our right back is great. Not sure what our back-up option is.
Our new keeper is cropped for some early critical games. Our back-up option is certified shit.

I think all that is a risk.

Sums it up for me.

Hmm. This is a bit gloomy, even by Silver Sean standards, but hard to argue with

Clyne, Lovren, Matip, Ragnar will all be fine. We need a new LB and by accounts the club are trying for one. We'll also have Gomez back soon too and I guess he 'could' play LB for us and he looked very good before the injury. And a little bit further out we'll have a decent keeper in the mix too.
Don't understand the doom and gloom.

It all depends on how good are Karius, Matip and Ragnar and how quickly they adapt to our league.

If Matip is the new Sami Hyypia, then we can relax a bit and I already like the look of both Karius and Ragnar. Lovren was excellent for the most part last year so centre back should be covered.

Some twitter rumours that Randall is training with Wigan ahead of a loan move there.

We must be pretty confident of landing some sort of a full back surely if this is true

Randall training with Wigan with a loan move on the cards.
Surely we must have something lined up?

Trent looked good though but might be a bit early for him. Interesting reading Stevie G's comments about him.

Our defense is obviously still shit.

I like Klopp but the summer signings have been odd and out of place.
Klopp's a great manager but his downfall would come from over-trusting players.

I don't mind giving players a chance but Sakho, Lovren, Lucas, Moreno and Mignolet should've been shot out instantly or at the very least very much down the pecking order.
They are all a bunch of bottlers who have taken this club very low.

This has not happened, and we will lose many matches in the upcoming season thanks to them.
This is all clear as day yet people still get their hopes up every fucking pre-season.

We have once again gone for quantity over quality(even though I must say we have out-done ourselves paying over the odds for mediocrity)
We have once again failed to address our issues.

We will once again fail, obviously, as our team is now painstakingly average.

That's the spirit!

Loving the optimism...

Honestly, I think our defense will be far from perfect at least at the start of the season and there is really not much that can be done. Just have to wait it out. Long-term I think we are on the right track: I recon Matip is exactly the defensive leader and aerial presence we've been missing and Ragnar adds a calm, experienced option, Karius will be an upgrade on Mignolet and LB situation will be solved eventually. We will have quality in depth with Gomez and Sakho competing for starting positions.

But at the start of the season we will still have Mignolet in goal, Matip and Ragnar playing their first games in the new league and either Moreno or Milner at LB. So brace yourself for a rocky first couple of months for our defense, but it will all get figured out eventually.

BTW I do think we will sign a new first-choice LB before September 1st. Probably either Hector or De Sciglio. Klopp probably doesn't want to pay over the odds – Hector was available for 9M before the Euros and now they are asking for 20M+, De Sciglio's value has also increased by a lot. If no other team is willing to pay what the selling teams are asking (hasn't happened so far), those crazy valuations will drop by the end of August and that's when we're likely to step in with a concrete offer.

Of course.

We finished 8th last year, anyone that isn't is daft.

Granted we have replaced two of the back 5, arguably 3 if you count Klavan, but considering Moreno wasn't the biggest concern after Ming it's still worrying.

That's our fault for not getting a deal one before the Euros. You snooze, you lose!
