He’s a string of piss and cannot remember him owning a forward. He runs like bambi. He’s a good defender when fit. He’s not commanding. Van Dijk is commanding.

HE OWNED LEWANDOWSKI IN BOTH SEM-I FINALS

LETS TURN THE TABLE, WHAT FORWARDS IN THAT 1 LOSS IN 44 GAMES HAVE OWNED HIM?

OK HE RUNS A LITTLE AWKWARDLY, WHO GIVES A FUCK.

Not sure how much it counts, but you do get the feeling that Gomez (and Konate will) "look up to Virg".

Matip, although not as commanding a physical presence as Konate or Gomez, doesn't look up to Virg. He views him as a partner. And Virg respects him as such.

He also owned Kane in the Champs League Final in 2019. Kane wasn't fully fit, but he only needs a second to score. Matip never gave him a look-in.

Gomez for me - fits the system by having the pace to cover Trent and balls over the top. Matip does pose a threat at set pieces which Gomez doesn't, but for our natural game Joe is the one for me.

I think that’s unfair on Gomez. Isn’t he usually left back for set pieces because of his pace?

Thought it was because he was cack at attacking the ball in the air and thus no point going up. Not much of a set piece threat.

Robbo is fast enough (usually the last man).

In regards to the original question. I think it depends on the opposition.

Ultimately I think it will be Virg and Konate (when he's up to speed) will be strongest. But right now, probably Virg and Matip against your likes of Burnleys' and Evertons'. Direct teams.

Virg and Gomez have the best chemistry though and against someone like Vardy/Werner/Aubameyang, those strikers that like to run in behind. It's probably want them.

Konate feels like a balance between Matip and Gomez. A Virg-lite.

But half the time Robbo is standing over the ball for the free kick or taking the corner.

Would be a bit weird if he "looked up" to Virg since they're the same age.

It's Matip for now. He's very consistent and like others have said, I think VVD prefers playing alongside Joel.

I just hope we have enough games to keep Gomez happy. If by some miracle Matip stays fit all year then Gomez will start considering his future here.

We're going to have a serious homegrown problem soon. Ben Davies has left. Phillips will likely leave as well. Milner will retire next year, and I expect that even Ox's future is uncertain.

Effectively, we might have only 4 players who're going to be considered homegrown next year - Kelleher, Gomez, Trent, Henderson.

Jones and Elliott of course look like they'll make it long-term, but they don't need to be registered for a while.

I expect we might try to sign some English talent soon.

I don't get this home grown stuff really. Is it in the premier league or Europe that we're in trouble?

PL rule - Max 17 foreign players in squad of 25. There's no minimum number of home-grown players required as such. But say you have only 4 home-grown players, your squad is then restricted to 21. Under-21 players don't need to be registered. They're eligible to play regardless.

CL rule - Identical in function, except that definition of home-grown is more stringent. At least 4 of your 8 home-grown players must be from your own youth system.

So basically we have too many foreigners in the squad atm

If you include Shaqiri, Karius, Origi and Minamino, we presently have 18. Karius will certainly be excluded from all squads, so we're down to 17.

Unless we sell one of Shaq, Origi and Minamino, we don't have space for any new foreign signing (unless he's under 21).

Long term, this might affect our recruitment policy, especially once Milner retires and we sell Phillips, Davies and Ox.

I expect we will try and retain Gomez at all costs since he is both homegrown and club-trained.

Interesting. In that case we should be looking to sign someone like Bellingham in the future to replace Milner.

I thought you don't have to register U21 but you can if you wish to meet the criteria (but then they are of course integral to the 25 not extra to it) ? If so then we can add Jones & Elliott and we also have Woodburn (is that why we're keeping him?) / and both Williams'. I may be wrong.

I don't see a long term issue so long as we buy in a 'home-grown' or two because Shaq. / Origi / Adrian will all be gone this year or next and because we have 2-3 from the U18s/U21s that look like they'll soon be part of the squad too.

Looking at the 32 currently listed on the PL website these won't be included or are already departed : Karius / Davies / Phillips / Shaq. / Ojo & Origi.
There are 6 U21s : Jones, Elliott, Rhys Williams, Neco Williams, Jones & Woodburn.
Homegrown 7 (apart from the above) : Kelleher, AA, Gomez, Milner, Hendo, Robbo & Ox.
There are 16 Foreign Players not included in the above.

Yeh I'm thinking Woodburn stays for homegrown and it's why we haven't sold Ox. Also why we are focusing on English talent in the youth

Robbo isn’t homegrown.
