O'Neill and Keane - The Irish Managerial "dreamteam"

What are the expectations of the Irish fans given the new management team?

Some entertaining bust ups in the squad ?

I'm not sure we're going to be much use over the next couple of years looking at the current squad and the lack of options coming through

Very little. You can only piss with the cock you've got, and O'Neill and Keane - regardless of how good or bad they are - have got a fucking horrendous set of players at their disposal.

If you squeeze the end you can piss further. Perhaps Keane is there to squeeze the end a bit?

This is minor stuff. The real news is this: Stephen Ireland has announced he's available again for selection. Seriously.

Good luck to them, it's always a tough job and a managerial partnership with ego's that big should be good value for money.

We have loads of decent players plying their trade in the Championship who are better than some of the Premier League donkeys we've selected in recent year e.g. Glenn Whelan, Paul McShane, Darron Gibson etc, etc, etc.

I see no probelm selecting a whole host of younger, hungrier players from the Championship (and one from the 1st Division) they can't play with less passion and technique than the recent squads. I would pick the following squad if fit......

Kieran Westwood (Sunderland)
Paddy Kenny (Leeds)

Seamus Coleman (Everton)
Richard Dunne (QPR)
Ciaran Clark (Villa)
Alex Pearce (Reading)
Richard Keogh (Derby)
Marc Wilson (Stoke)

Sean Murray (Watford)
Wes Hoolihan (Norwich)
Jeff Hendrick (Derby)
Stephen Dawson (Bournemouth)
Stephen Quinn (Hull)
Anthony Pilkington (Norwich)
Robbie Brady (Hull)
Stephen Gleeson (MK Dons)
Kevin Dawson (Yeovil)
Sean Scannell (Huddersfield)
Alan Judge (Blackburn)
Harry Arter (Bournemouth)

Simon Cox (Forest)
Jonathon Walters (Stoke)
Noel Hunt (Leeds)
Shane Long (WBA)

Slightly too many midfielders but I just listed all those who were better than Glenn fucking Whelan. This squad would hardly scare top opposition but they are all very good players who are better than many players playing in the Premier League.

As an Englishman I don't have insight into Ireland fans expectation but I do know that the first letter of the surnames of the new Manager and Assistant spell O K.

It's an omen I tell ya.

I think it's an inspired idea, given their remit, but they really do need a coach.

Genuine question, but how much coaching can actually be done at international level? I mean they have about two training sessions before each match. I would think the level of coaching would be quite minimal. Not that there doesn't need to be at all, but I think it's more down to tactics and motivation.

True, but if they got to a tournament it would be much more important. A big if, I know.

Keane's had time away from management to reflect on how he handled things previously. Is it totally beyond the bounds of possibility that he might have decided to modify his approach, in some ways at least?

Stephen Ireland is ready to play for the Republic of Ireland - six years after last pulling on the green jersey.
The Stoke midfielder, 27, has been in international exile since 2007 after he became embroiled in the infamous "Grannygate" scandal.

He had been given compassionate leave for the death of his grandmother but there was one problem - she was not dead.

He later told how he had used the story to cover up his girlfriend's miscarriage and that the confusion over what actually happened left him cornered.

Ireland hasn’t played for the Republic since but he is now making himself available for selection following the appointment of his former Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill and assistant Roy Keane this week.

The former Manchester City player told the Daily Star: "I've started four games and I want to make sure I start the next 10 or 15, but at the back of my mind is Ireland.

"I would like to get together with Martin or Roy and have a chat.

"Euro qualifying doesn't start until next September and so I have some time to think about that.

"They are two great men who are very determined and have achieved a lot in their own career.

"Roy Keane is an absolute legend in football and Martin O'Neill has done well wherever he has gone.
"I think football in Ireland is going in the right direction because there's a lot of good players."
